For Gay Boys Only: Do you prefer a mate that is into disco?

I'm hesitant to ask this question, but my curiousity has the best of me...

In the past I have found it nice to be with someone that enjoys the same music as I do.....however, I have found I get more than a little apprehensive about other guys handling my music. It has often amazed me how many people allow their fingertips to touch the surface of a record?? I can whip a record out of the jacket with my middle finger at the center hole and the side of my thumb at the edge of the record within a second. I don't know why so many people have a difficult time handling a record appropriately? As a result, in spite of my attempt to educate my spouse of the correct handling technique, my records get missandled, played more than frequently and are at some risk of being scratched. And sometimes have to worry about them dissappearing, which hasn't happened as of yet.

On the other side, I have been with guys that either don't care for disco or only want to hear it occasionally. I think I have come to the conclusion, it is better to not share this interest with a mate. This way my records stay safe, and I will just deal with listening to them when I'm alone or with someone else. I'm very interested to hear about other peoples experiences...

This is a good question. I suppose it would apply mainly to gay guys because disco in most cases is associated as gay music. Although I'm sure they exist, I haven't met any women who collect old disco music.

It is gratifying to finally find a song you have been looking for after sometimes years of searching, so understandably I think most collectors are very protective of their music.

Since my lover and I are getting ready to celebrate 25 years together I would definitely say, YES! Does he know how to handle vinyl? Yes, and all he had to do was watch me do it. Nice when the person you love also has a brain.

Don't know why you only asked gay men. I'm sure Jussi, Paul, Bernie, Delight and others could add to your discussion. I don't know about women being "collectors" but I know they can enjoy disco just as well as anyone else. :) And I would venture a guess that all those female dj's I met haven't simply thrown their record collections away.

I would like that special someone to like the same kind of music I like...BUT I WANT THEM TO BE AS GOOD TO MY RECORDS AS I AM......Is that too much to ask? :) If I had a lover :cry: :cry:
Maybe someday....I always seem to get hooked up with assholes that just use me :evil: but that's a whole other TV show.. :D Hats off to you NickNack and your lover..25 years is super. I thought about this after I hit the submit button...but it was too late, unfortunately no way to edit the subject caption. The record collectors of known over the past 20+ years have all been gay guys. So, I thought of zero-ing on other guys in a similar situation. I thought others might answer anyway...oh well

Actually, I also should have realized, that by the way I phrased the question it would probably scare off more replies, rather than attract them from gay guys...you know how private they can be...

unfortunatly ...having a very diverse and somewhat odd musical taste ..i have never met anyone who shares my same tastes...so i guess i am happier with some one who has no particular musical bent...that way i can control the turntable !!!!

My partner can't stand Disco...and that is not the end of the world.

As for the handling of vinyl, he is for CD recordings all the way, so my albums are safe from abuse.

I'm 28 and my partner is 24, so he wasn't exposed to disco in the past very much. I was always into disco since elementary school and had a good collection of vinyl that I unfortunately parted with. Recently, I've started listening to disco again, and he likes a lot of the stuff I play. That's important. He's been into more soulless generic 90's dance music, but sees the value of disco. He's started listening to the stuff even when I'm not around. Yeah, it's at least important that they don't hate it!
