I have been asked by a friend to compile a playlist of the tunes that were playued at Studio 54 in 1979. When I went, I recall Chic, Sister Sledge, Carrie Lucas & Taste of Honey but I was so drunk (ahem) I really can't remember much now.![]()
I am hoping that other members of the community will be able to help me out and name a few tracks that were played at this famous club on a night in 1979!

Stuff like Taste of Honey in 1979? - that was big during the early summer of 1978. Would the Studio djs have spinned year old stuff when there was a flood of product available and lifespans of records were very short?
Anyway, a fanatic that I already was in 1979 I wrote down many of the titles I recognised in clubs each night while in New York. Because the majority were totally new to me I had to grab people on the dancefloor and yell to their ears "do you know what this is called!?". Most often of course I got no info from anyone as most people were clueless of what they danced to all thru the era. So, quite often I ended up scribbling desciptions like "c. 132 bpm, synths, women going savage lover savage lover", and going round the record stores next day singing the tune to clerks.
However, after my first visit to Studio 54 last week of June 1979 I wrote:
Theo Vaness - Sentimentally it's You
Sylvester - Stars
Ednah Holt - People Come Dance
Ring My Bell
Cafe
Lady Night
Love de Luxe - Here Comes That Sound Again
Born To Be Alive
Cuba
good synth song with men singing, angry sound, ???, c 135
- The bloody Ring My Bell was probably the biggest sound in NY that month, that's what the clerks in all the vinyl stores told me, including the Buddha of Times Square.
Wonderful!! Thank you so much!
