I'm looking for suggestions for Motown disco tunes to be included on a compilation. I'd appreciate any ideas. If there is a specific mix you know of, let me know.

    Hi PH,

May I ask, is this list for you personally or something possibly for Motown?

I'm sorry, I've got to ask this, too. Is your name really Phyllis Hyman or are you offering tribute?

The name is a tribute. I won't even start to tell you how fantastic I thought she was, God bless her.

Re the compilation, if I can come up with enough quality tracks I'm going to put the idea forward to our A&R director as we handle Motown here. I intoduced a friend of mine, Jo Wallace (check her site http://www.theseoldshoes.com) and she's just done Soul Satisfaction 2, The Motown connection. I want to do a more disco-fied comp. I'm thinking Saturday Night, Sunday Morning; The Boss; Do I Do etc.

Hey Nicky, shouldn't we mention Miss Yvonne Fair's incomparable "It Should Have Been Me" for some sort of Motown compilation? Although not technically disco, it did get played, it's not on cd and we love it!

Now, many of the Motown disco classics are on cd and I think there were three Funkology volumes devoted to Motown Disco. Hmmm...what about the Diana Ross & The Supremes Hits Medley that I only have on 12" or Diana's 12" mix of "Chain Reaction"? OOPS!!!! I guess "Chain Reaction" was from Diana's RCA years! Sooory! Anyway, I think that record, produced by Barry Gibb, was her last Great tune. Too bad it didn't do anything in the U.S. It went to #1 in England.

    Hi Again,

First, I and many others agree with you about Phyllis. I ache when I think of the music that could have been.

Now, here's a quick & dirty list. I just flipped through my collection and grabbed anything I spotted "Motown".

    1. BLOODSTONE - JUST WANNA GET THE FEEL OF IT

    2. BONNIE POINTER - HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU / FREE ME FROM MY FREEDOM

    3. CARL BEAN - I WAS BORN THIS WAY

    4. CLIFTON DYSON - BODY IN MOTION

    5. DENNIS EDWARDS - DON'T LOOK ANY FURTHER

    6. DIANA ROSS - THE BOSS / NO ONE GETS THE PRIZE / YOUR LOVE IS SO GOOD FOR ME / LOVE HANGOVER (If you've got that 10:10 "bootleg" remix then, that's the one!) / SURRENDER / ERUCU - (From the Mahogany soundtrack)

    7. DYNAMIC SUPERIORS - NOWHERE TO RUN / DECEPTION

    8. EDDIE KENDRICKS - GIRL, YOU NEED A CHANGE OF MIND / KEEP ON TRUCKIN' / BOOGIE DOWN

    9. FOUR TOPS - REACH OUT, I'LL BE THERE (The 1988 12" remix by Phil Harding)

    10. JACKSON FIVE - FOREVER CAME TODAY

    11. LIONEL RICHIE - RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT

    12. MARY JANE GIRLS - ALL NIGHT LONG / IN MY HOUSE

    13. MIRACLES - LOVE MACHINE

    14. THE ORIGINALS - DOWN TO LOVE TOWN

    15. RICK JAMES - YOU AND I

    16. SISTER LOVE - GIVE ME YOUR LOVE

    17. STEVIE WONDER - AS / ANOTHER STAR / DO I DO / SIR DUKE

    18. THE SUPREMES - LET YOURSELF GO / I'M GONNA LET MY HEART DO THE WALKING (Hot Tracks Remix) / STONED LOVE '91 (Hot Tracks Remix) / BAD WEATHER

    19. TATA VEGA - JUST KEEP THINKING ABOUT YOU BABY

    20. THE TEMPTATIONS - STANDING ON THE TOP / GLASSHOUSE / SHAKEY GROUND / LAW OF THE LAND / HAPPY PEOPLE

    21. THELMA HOUSTON - DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY / I'M HERE AGAIN / I CAN'T GO ON LIVING WITHOUT YOUR LOVE / SATURDAY NIGHT, SUNDAY MORNING

    22. UNDISPUTED TRUTH - LAW OF THE LAND / BIG JOHN IS MY NAME

    23. VAL YOUNG - IF YOU SHOULD EVER BE LONELY / SEDUCTION

    24. WILLIE HUTCH - BROTHERS GONNA WORK IT OUT / YOU SURE KNOW HOW TO LOVE YOUR MAN / LOVE POWER

    25. YVONNE FAIR - IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME (PLEASE!! Put this song back out there!)

And before any of my partners come screaming back at me, I know these songs are not all "disco". Let's just not go there again, OK?

Nicky's list covers most of the great ones. Allow me to add a few more titles...

GIVE IT TO ME BABY - Rick James (My favorite dance record of all-time! Talk about HOOKS!!!)

GOT TO GIVE IT UP - Marvin Gaye (Another great groove song. The 11+ minute mix, please.

WALK AWAY FROM LOVE - David Ruffin

HIGH ENERGY/ HE'S MY MAN - The Supremes

MY MISTAKE/ DON'T KNOCK MY LOVE - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye

LET'S GET STARTED/ BRICK HOUSE - The Commodores

LOVIN' LIVIN' GIVIN'- Diana Ross (Miss Ross attempts to give Donna Summer a little competition with a Giorgio Moroder inspired synth track. It never caught on...but I like it.

IT'S MY HOUSE - Diana Ross ( the 12" mix- perfect morning music).

BABY THAT'S BACKATCHA - Smokey Robinson

GOIN' UP IN SMOKE - Eddie Kendricks

and last-- a record that Brian Chin of Billboard called "the first landmark of disco"--"People...Hold On "(1972) by Eddie Kenricks. I've never heard this record; sure would love to!

Thank you guys. I think we're gonna have to go for a double cd at this stage. It'll probably take about nine months though to get clearances etc but e-mail me now and when it's out I'll send you a copy.

One last question..has Diana Ross's 'I ain't been licked' ever been remixed?

This is for Marky. I got hold of the Eddie Kendriks album "My People..hold on" (courtesy of Jo Wallace)and listened to the title track and I don't see how that could be the the first disco track ever(even though it's a very good sleaze track). But there's a track there called "Girl, you need a change of mind" which is stunning and I'd never heard before and I think that might be the one you're thinking of.

    Hi PH,

You are sooo right. The album title was "People...Hold On". I just found this at Ameoba records. "Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind" is often cited as the first "Disco" record. We've had that discussion here several times.

Anyway, at the time I posted, I didn't know that "GYNACOM" was from that LP. I just read in a reference book that Brian Chin cited "PHO" as the first landmark of disco. He was obviously referring to the whole LP not that individual song. Sorry for the confusion.

So how's the compilation coming along?

Sorry, I'm a little dense - are you asking about the Eddie Kendricks LP? It was out on it's own probably a decade or so ago, but has since been reissued via Hip-O-Select as a package with his first albums up to the Keepin On Truckin' one.

Date With The Rain is another great proto-disco track from that record.

As for whether these songs are the FIRST disco tunes, that's still up for debate! :)

I believe it did. A CD called Motown Disco engineered in London was created a year or two back.Artists include Rick James, Eddie Kendricks, Diana Ross (Love Hangover & The Boss) , plus Thelma, Platinum Hook, Carl Bean & The Originals to name but a few feature on the double CD! The compilers include Ian Dewhirst who has put many compilations together here in the UK!

    Re: Motown Disco Hits

There were a couple of Motown CDs I've seen. Even though they're not all disco tunes, the series of Motown best of CDs that covered 1975 and 76 had a good sampling of disco from those years. And there was another series from Universal called Disco Nights, if I'm not mistaken. One of the volumes was specifically Motown, but it was all of the main hits like Love Machine and Dancing Machine I recall.

    Well...there was this comp:

Motown Disco: Soulful Grooves from the '70s and '80s

    Then came this comp:

All Night Long: Classic 80's Grooves [Universal International]

And this one was the Disco Nights comp you referred to:

Disco Nights, Vol. 9: Motown Dance

But noticeably absent from the Motown Disco: Soulful Grooves from the '70s and '80s is Bonnie Pointer's Heaven Must Have Sent You.

While it is disco, I quess it just wasn't soulful enough.
