Awesome interview!! One of my favorites now. Who does better interviews than Ms. Dayna? Listening to Candi's music brings back such joyous memories. Thanks again Dayna.
Dayna has finished another personal interview with one of the greats from the '70s: Candi Staton. Dayna took your questions and got Candi's responses in this insightful interview. Please check it out and leave your comments at:

OH Where I have Dave Carpenter..when I asked how she met him I meantDavid Crawford.Dave Carpenter gave her the name The First lady of southern soul.. .and the producer that produced the second album was Bob Monaco.I hate to make mistakes..:icon_eek:

thanks, Dayna, for conducting and sharing that interview with a genuinely talentled star and more importantly, a truly great lady. I swear -- you have this natural gift/talent for engaging these interviewees in a loose, relaxed conversation style, which elicits so much honesty from artists like Ms. Staton, and that warmth just comes right across to readers like me. Appreciate you much !!!
Nice job Dayna, Bernie, and Candi.
It's always interesting to know the state of mind of the artist when they made their music.
Find them and destroy them!
Ms. Dayna;
Another top of the line, top tier, stand out virtually from all others interview! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The best part was the "crying in the greens" and you coming back with "she put flavor in the greens with her tears." (could have written a song about that).
Thanks again Ms. Dayna.

Hi,
Dayna asked me to correct a small error in her interview with Candi Staton where she asks about David Carpenter... it should read David Crawford. It is now corrected. Thanks again Dayna!

I could relate because I use to clean greens with my mama too.. I could'nt resist about the extra flavor. we got a good kiki off of it,and it lightened the mood. I'm sure alott of people are like what the hell is a green? lol
Very entertaining interview, Dayna.![]()
I liked learning that Candi and Gloria Gaynor are girlfriends. Who knew? :icon_eek:
And her behind the scenes take on Dave Crawford and the other guys she worked with was fascinating.
And judging by the photo, Candi is still lookin' good too.![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."

Nice job Dayna!
Some juicy tidbits to be found .
For instance:
How interesting that these two shared an apartment together back then!!Candi Staton:
Ollie ( Brown) was always a sweetheart. He wasn't as outgoing as Ray Parker, but they were always together, they were like two peas in a pod. They shared an apartment together at the time, they were best friends.
And believe me I'm not trying to make anything more out of that .....except to imagine these two young hot shot up-and-coming studio musicians making good money ....running wild in the Hollywood scene ....entertaining in their bachelor pad .
I bet there are some stories there !! :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

lol..
About 30 % of what myself and the ladies talk about is not printed.. because we get to carrying on and well, girls talk to each otherBut what is talked about between us as girlfriends isn't printed because they trust me and I keep my word.
Dirt isn't worth losing trust over IMO.
Wonderful interview Miss D you are the business. Many thanx for putting my questions to Candi. I look forward as always to your next interview.

Hi Dayna .....just reading the interview again with my morning coffee and I'm curious about this :
By "this record" I'm assuming Candi Staton means the YHRF album?? And then if so, is the quote miswritten or did Candi misspeak or do I just not get it .....:icon_confused:He also signed a contract stating that if this record didn't do as well as they expected it to do that I would sign and be solely a Warner Brothers artist and Fame Records would let go of me completely.
why would Warner Bros. want to sign her if the album didn't do well??? It seems the deal would've been just the opposite .
Its also odd that Dave Crawford made such a deal on her behalf ...unless she wanted that (to be signed to Warners) to be the case and they'd agreed ahead of time when going into this ?
Thank you Dayna for any 'splainin' you can provide !!

It was hard for me to really understand this as well,When speaking to an artist you don't want to grill or make them feel like they're not telling a story about "their life"correctly so you sometimes have to wing it as long as it's nothing crucial..sometimes even asking questions pertaining wont get you what you need for that one point~!!
From what I could gather it wasn't even an album of Candi's that David brought to Warner,as to why the contract was signed for Candi to be soley a Warner artist in conjuntion to that I have no idea.. ..
Bill Carpenter read the interview and didn't find what was written to be flawed so I took what was said and wrote it verbatim. So no it wasn't miswritten.
Awesome!! I haven't been to this forum in a while. I'm sorry I missed the opportunity to ask a question. She sang at my church back around 1990. Her songs are an inspiration to my life. I loved her then and love her now. I just thought I would tell her that.
I loved her expression "cryin in my greens"!!
Disco! Where the Happy People Go.
Wonderful interview. I always loved Candi.
My favourites would have to be 'Nights on Broadway' & 'When You Wake Up Tomorrow'.
It surprised me so was/is that close with GLoria Gaynor. But now that I think about it, they have a lot in common. Would be fun to hang out with those two! :icon_razz:
Many thanks, Dayna
