I happen to like a lot of today's music. For starters, I'm into obscure metal bands such as In Flames, Opeth, Impaled, Mental Horror, Skinlab, Shadows Fall, Meshuggah, Six Feet Under, Deeds Of Flesh, and others. I also listen to more mainstream newer metal bands such as Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, and System Of A Down. I'm also into such artists as Britney Spears, Pink, and Avril Lavigne. And also a few "alternative" bands appeal to me, such as Nirvana, Alice In Chains, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Donnas. Another band I like is Jamiroquai. I could go on and on with this list, but I think you'll get the idea.

Unlike most people my age, I'm open to new music, But then again, I'm not most people, and that's what makes me an individual.

Well, I don't listen to much of the modern stuff, I'm more of a 70's bloke which is unusual for a 21 year old. But there are some modern stuff that I don't mind hearing:

Metallica - My brothers play their stuff, and they are really great, I think they are referred to as the metal kings

Some modern dance and trance music - My brother Jade likes to play a lot of modern dance music and some of it is fantastic, I like that song "Superstylin'" though don't know who the artist is whom performed it

Quannum - I Changed My Mind (GREAT piece of early 70's style funk done in a modern era)

Spiller - Groovejet (Great 1978 style disco song done in modern era)

Weird Al parodies (This bloke has been piss funny  right from day one. He has taken the piss out of MANY pop songs of the 70's, 80's and 90's and never fails to make me laugh    . Love his recent parodies he did in the last 10 years such as):
Gump (Parody of Presidents Of The United State's "Lump" which Weird Al is taking the piss out of Forest Gump    )
Amish Paradise (This is a good one, he's parodizing Coolio's "Gangster's Paradise" with the life style of an Amish which they are living in the 1600's, and the funny thing is I've recently watched a holiday program on TV and they were checking out places in a certain area of USA and there was an area with a Amish community and they REALLY DO live a lifestyle that's of the 1600's and go around in horsedrawn buggies, I wouldn't be surprised if they lived without electricity too    . Then again it's their culture so I respect it)
Pretty Fly For A Rabbi (parody of Offspring's "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" which Weird Al is dressed like a Rabbi looking similar to an Amish    )

Chris Franklin parodies (Now here's an Aussie version of Weird Al but with one difference, Chris Franklin does his parodies using the Aussie bloke's style which he's material is of footy, beer, pies, blokes, yobbos and cricket. Here are some great parodies I've heard):
Bloke (This would have to be his BEST ever, this is a parody of Meredith Brooks's 1997 hit "Bitch" and he's turned the song into a song about blokes/ockers "I'm a bloke, I'm an ocker and I really love your knockers, I'm a labourer by day, I piss up all me pay, watchin footy on TV, just feed me more VB, just pour my beer and get my smokes and go away....I'm a bloke I'm a yobbo and my best mate's name is Robbo, Winfield is my cigarette, I dress in flannellette, shearer's singlet that is blue, throw in a few tattoos, you know you wouldn't want me any other way    )
Don't Drink My Stubbie (A parody of Madison Avenue's "Don't Call Me Baby" where Chris's version is about him with his mates in the backyard having a barby and a slab of VB    )
Jack Off Australia (Parody of Banjo Patterson's classic Aussie folk song "Waltzing Matilda" and the songs about the Australian flag getting rid of the union jack    )
The Footy Rap (Not sure what song Chris is taking the piss out of but this one is a rap song all about Australian rules football which is Chris's favourite type of material    )

Most of the modern stuff I like is mainly modern dance music, the rest of the stuff does nothing for me.

I'd go for the soulful house too. Stuff like MAW, DJ Pope, Kerri Chandler, music from the Hed Kandi Stereo Sushi series and many others.

I still enjoy some of today's r&b...Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Gary Taylor, Rachel Ferrell, Will Downing & Phil Perry.

Also..lots of today's Jazz music. Roy Hargrove, Joey Defranscesco Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, Antonio Hart & Fusion stuff like Scott Henderson and Mike Stern.

Classic jazz artist I like include: Oscar peterson, Miles Davis, Bill Evans & Donald Byrd.

Goodlooking chill, deep house and nudisco compliations are hard to resist. One buys these things especially if the typography is stylish and the packaging is done right, gives them a few gos in the car stereo and admires the typo for a while. Pet Shop Boys Disco 3 is out now. I for one also check out the world music dept and soundtracks for cool Bollywood stuff a la Kabbi Kushi Kabbi Ghan, lots of percussion and razorsharp brass. Latin and Brazilelectro. Any versions of Gainsbourg's "La Javanaise". Italian genre film soundtrack re-issues. German ad music done with synths.

    Kylie Minogue
    Lenny Kravitz
    U2
    Moby
Reggae - Sean Paul, Mr.Vegas, Buju Banton etc....

Don't know about others, but I always listened to several music genres simultaneously, and with time that seems to go even wider. (I'm sure there are people like this in the forum.) Let's say back then my usual options were disco, sympho/prog rock and new wave bands. Much water had passed under the bridge since then...
Right now I listen to a lot of black-related genres like r&b, soul, funk, disco of course, hip-hop... Also singers of the "neo-soul" generation like D'Angelo, Maxwell & Erykah... Some years ago there was many blues records near my stereo... And of course jazz is always there, today even more so (in fact I feel a bit ashamed now of the jazz-rock records I used to hear 15 years ago, like Return to Forever or even the Pat Metheny Group, which I used to love).
Rock? Less and less of today's as years go by. But I still stick to old singer-songwriters (Dylan, Joni, Van, Neil Young...) and pop bands (Beatles, XTC, Steely Dan...). With time I tend to rely less on power chords and more on the crafting of a good melody line.
Also some European DJ music like Kid Loco, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, etc.; some regional sounds like Cesaria Evora's sweet mornas; Brazilian voices and songcrafters... And from my country, less rock and more and more tango... They say you understand tango as you get older... And certainly that's my case.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

I also forgot to mention I also LOVE the Soundtrack to the computer game "Interstate '76". For a modern recording the funky songs sound soooooooooooooo 70's and sooooooooooo cool 8) :D with authentic 70's style funky music 8) :D . IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL :D !!!!! Must say I can spot some of the songs as cover versions of "Stretchin' Out In A Rubberband" by Bootsy and "Future Shock" by Curtis Mayfield.

As a 42 year old disco music lover, I've never had any trouble in finding new music to follow.

My quests for new music can be broken down as follows:

First of all, there is plenty of original Seventies (and 60T's and 80T's as well ...) soul, funk and disco music to be discovered for the first time. I am always coming across tunes I have never heard before - either as tracks I have never heard on a compilation I have bought or tracks I have heard on the radio. And of course there are always the CDs that come winging their way through the post from other discomusic.com members!!

Secondly, there is plenty of new music to keep me going: the more soulful end of the Garage music scene. K-Bee singled out the Stereo Sushi series from Hed Kandi and I definitely go along with him on that one! There are some really interesting and spiritually uplifting tracks on those CDs!

Also there is plenty of new jazz music to get interested in. Some of the smooth jazz stuff is OK, I guess, but there is some real jazz out there as well. Recently I picked up the Diana Krall Live In Paris CD.

And best of all, there is plenty of modern decent soul and funk music to be found - mainly sourced from the radio. My current rave is the new LP from Bunny Sigler that is just out - real quality soul music in 2003. Wonderful ...

And if I may ask, what do you listen to, MAN?

    :)

Thanks jazz_pilgrim, really you got the same answer that I can tell, first I'm 43 now but I'm still enjoying the 70's and 80's disco and funky beat, this is what can I fully taste, but I'm as you always searching about something that I don’t had in my collections of this old music or get some new CD's to replace some of my LP's that getting to bad condition or some tapes also, but also as you said there is some good new jazz music now, not as before but good
I can also taste some rape and R&B music specially in the last year I feel that this music have some changes in the beat now and some of the groups now get good music, do you think that also? But really the dance music of now time I hardly find something to give me attention.
To give you an idea of what I listen to now it's something such SISQO, SHAKIRA, MARIAH CAREY, JENIFER LOPEZ (not the last album) ENIGMA, SACRED SPIRIT (they're very good for those how love this Higher Octave
music ) , the last album from SHAGGY is good , MELANIE C, TONI BRAXTON, GOO GOO DOLS, but the problem is that in about one year you can find only about 20 good tracks you remember them and the rest where !!!!! at 70's and 80's weekly you got something new and good form here and there, sorry my English not very good but I hope you got the idea, thanks again.

I can't remember the last time I had listened to a then-current song, one that I liked a lot. I would say up until mid-1991 was when I was listening to current music. When I discovered the 70's disco/pop in the early 90's, everything changed.

I agree with a lot of what you say. There is still plenty of unknown (to me) 70T's and 80T's soul funk and disco waiting to be discovered!

A lot of the dance music today I definitely don't like but when you stray up to the soulful end of garage music - that's where the interesting dance tunes of today are to be found, m'thinks!

I enjoyed that Shaggy LP as well - I saw him in concert with my son and he was brilliant - a real showman!

Don't worry about your English - I get your drift!!

Funky Dude had mentioned Spiller's "Groove Jet" as a new track with the 70s disco sound. Its in actuality "Love Break" by Salsoul Orchestra looped in a sampler with modern beats thrown over it. Which brings me to my oppinion of todays music. In all honesty, I cant stand it and do not care for it with the acception of some of the really deep House music thats 100% original and kinda follows the paths artists like Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk and Rinder And Lewis layed out in the late 1970's. I in all honesty havent liked the quote on quote "current top hits" or "new releases" since about 1987/88. Mind you I do listen to all types of music but nothing beyond that time frame unless it was one of the rock groups I was a fan of and bought their new LPs/CD's when they came out. Also, some of todays jazz music is good stuff reminding me of some of the old 5am disco music. But this **** they try to pass of as Rock and Metal now??? Like Mick Jagger said to Michael Jackson in the 12" promo of "Too Much Blood"....Give Me A Fucking Break!! LOL. Also, the rap..oops I mean CRAP music and hip hop is also ridiculous but I think just about every regular that knows me well enough on this forum knows my oppinion on rap since the 1990's came about. And teenie pop music...make me wanna barf!! (and I thought New Kids On The Block were bad back in the time...wohhhhhh if I could only have seen the future)

The new album by "1L" called "Das Nonstop-Programm" is total old school inspired electric disco funk with a modern edge.

A couple of standout tracks in that style are "You Got The Funky" and "Trax."

You can hear some samples at www.Res-Freq.com

The "Groove Jet" sample is from Carol Williams "Love Is You" on Salsoul. This track was played 'till death in germany and made Sophie Ellis Bextor famous. This versions were remixes by Boris Dlugosch, a famous DJ in Germany.
