You lucky!! :icon_biggrin:
OK please see if you can get Candi to reveal any and all that she can about producer Dave Crawford and what it was like working with him .
In the first place how and why did they get hooked up?? Had she heard of him ....he of her ?
From what I understand she flew into LA and did that entire album in one day!! ( LA disco: Ray Parker Jr....Ollie Brown ..etc. ...) Dave had it pretty much ready and waiting ( True??)
But the two must have hit a spark or found value in each other because they continued their partnership off and on after that on into the eighties . Still in touch??
And of course you have to have Candi elaborate as much as possible on all aspects of YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE ... ( d-uh ) .... I know you will:icon_biggrin::icon_mrgreen:
I believe she has since distanced herself from its sentiments ...
BUT ....at the time and judging from the way she sang it with such conviction the song must have resonated with her at the time.
And since at the time of recording YHRF ....she was twice divorced and with four kids !!
( Did Dave Crawford know any of this ...did he write any of this with her in mind??) .
As far as YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE ....its just one of those songs where you cannot imagine anyone else singing it .Candi was perfect for it... nailed it .
How much lead way did she have in her stylizing her singing of this narrative??
Her word emphasis are so terrific ...I'm thinking in particular the way she sings lines like ....
"my mind must be free ....to LEEARN all I can about me ".
& in connection to this, her sort of trademark "uh-huh" ... was that an ad lib on her part ? or scripted?
And then there's the clever follow-up ....VICTIM . (I wasn't hardly worried about tomorrow, You were my future. Uh-huh!!!)
That song (VICTIM) is basically one very long ( 8:00 plus ) continuous story being told by her .... hard to learn?? Surely not recorded in one long take !!! I hope they all enjoyed putting that together as it seems when listening ....
inquiring minds want to know all !!
Love you Miss Staton!! Thanks !!! :icon_cool: :icon_cool: :icon_cool:

I wish I had a lot of questions for her, but I can only think of one, which is more related to Dave Crawford. I was just wondering if during the time she worked with Dave if he ever thought of doing sessions with her using the philly musicians he worked with on those earlier ABC recordings for artists like Mighty Clouds of Joy, BB King, Jackie Moore, and his own projects.
And was there any other producer other than Dave Crawford she thought about working for because she heard they had a good reputation in the industry for being easy to work with and they were hit makers during the late 70s?

I believe it is Candi Staton's Birthday tomorrow 3-13-2009. Happy Birthday!

Alright!! Ready for another great interview for my files!
Didn't Ms. Candi do a concert with the great Sylvester here in Houston during the Disco peak? Would love to hear about their time together:icon_razz:
Can hardly wait Dayna!
DANCE!!-To the BOOGIE WONDERLAND........
......but I was just getting started !!
By the way I miscounted ....when Candi Staton recorded YOUNGHRF .... she was a single(divorced) Mom of FIVE kids ... four from her first marriage and one from her marriage to blind performer Clarence "PATCHES" Carter ....whom I have a feeling you won't be asking her about:icon_razz: ..... nor her reaction to his big comeback record from 1987:
Cull from my questions what you want Dayna ... :icon_cool:
....but believe it or not
I'd be particularly interested to hear her comment on her infamous "Uh-HUHs" :icon_mrgreen::icon_cool:
Look forward to it !!

Hi Dayna
Hope you are well. Nice to see you back on the block.
I saw Candi in Brighton (UK) 3 weeks ago please tell her how much I enjoyed the show. She played the bootleg version of 'you've got the love' (the version thats overlaid over Frankie Knuckles-Your love) which has been a big hit in the UK several times. I just wondered what she first thought when she heard that version in 1990. Also to spill the beans on who she was referring to when she talked about herself being the "Real thing" in relation to Southern Soul (there was a cheeky suggestion of someone else who WAS NOT the real thing)
Best wishes
Z
Can't wait for Ms. Dayna's super interview! While we are waiting, here's an interview worth viewing and listening from YOUTUBE:

I'd only like to know if she realized what a beautiful song "Run to Me" was when she did it. And didn't she have a late night gospel TV show on a few years back? I think I remember seeing it, and she was discussing a rough period in her life...

I'm sure it's great and I hope everyone else enjoys it but I never listen to nor do I read interviews conducted with the artist I'm going to be interviewing before I myself Interview them.
this way I'm not swayed one way or another in regards to the question I have already drafted. Plus as journalists we all have a certain style we like to maintain.
Thank you for the post Garry
