Hey, I'm new to the board but I was wondering if anyone liked David Sanborn? I stumbled across some info that his DVD Live in Montreux 1984 is coming out soon. Has anyone heard when? I'd really like to know. Thanx
I bought many of his 80's albums. I quite enjoy these funky instrumental tracks.
Mr. Miller made sure that it grooved a lot too.
I also bought the Chuck Mangione album in which Shirley McLaine rapped to a funky track,too.![]()

There's no doubt that Sanborn was a musical innovator when he released the popular "Hideaway" set in 1980. Along with group like Spyro Gyra and the Japanese act Casiopea, he more or less set the standard for how 80s jazz-funk (soon dubbed smooth jazz) was supposed to sound
The problem about Sanborn is he quickly got too popular for his own good and at some point in the late 80s every sax player copied his style resulting in a bunch of Sanborn clones with no musical ideas of their own. It's not Sanborn's fault but he did suffer a bit in the process. I believe that's why he went for an all acoustic setting for a while in the early 90s with a few albums.
That's true!!! Most of Sanborn's Funk came from his stint with the JB's in the late 70's. Maceo and the gang were gone, and James Brown needed to recruit a new lead saxman. I guess, like other Musicians, David Sanborn couldn't stand for James's Tyranny and Mood Swings anymore, and persued his own successful solo career.

"Way down in Louisiana close to New Orleans; way back up in the woods among the evergreens; stood a log cabin made of earth and wood; lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode; Who never ever learned to read and write so well but he could play the guitar just like wringin a bell"umgd
