Price Shock - Love Machine by The Miracles

I had major surprise last night while looking through eBay for some disco music to purchase. Earlier that day I had marked a promo copy of The Miracles - Love Machine on 12 inch as a "Watch this Item" not really taking note of the price. Well last night I thought I'd do a little more browsing and imagine my shock when I realized that the dealer is asking almost $1100 U.S. for that 12 inch single!!! Do records really go for that much? And, is this really that rare?

According to popsike which is a online database of past ebay/online auction results, A clean label and a record rated VG+ has fetched between $500-$600..This record rarely comes up for auction on ebay, so there are few auctions to go by..I bought a clean label /VG+ sometime back and I paid $1000, because for one I had the money to blow, but also it's difficult to find this record on ebay or any other online record dealer. I've seen this 12" on eBay too, but wouldn't pay over a $1000 for it. For that matter I wouldn't pay $100 for a 12" unless I had the money to and it was something I had been searching years for.

Love Machine can be found on the 'City of Angels' album and it's the full 6.54 version. I found a US copy of the album at a local record fair a few years back and only paid a few dollars for it.

You make a valid point of view...But for some record collectors the pressing itself is as important as the song thats pressed on it..

Love Machine can be found on the 'City of Angels' album and it's the full 6.54 version. I found a US copy of the album at a local record fair a few years back and only paid a few dollars for it.

And, might I add, the Tamla LP is pressed VERY well!:icon_eek:
Which is unusual, in itself, for Motown. And it's at the start of the 2nd side. So you don't have that end-of-the-record, cartridge-out-of-alignment distortion, either!

More than 1000$ for a 12" of a song widely known and available elsewhere in the same mix :icon_eek:? And worst, there is no hope to find it at a better price. The main problem with the internet seems that sellers are aware of each others and they ask basically the same price for a record. Price differences between a seller and another are usually insignificant and bargains are really hard to find on the net. I prefer flea markets -specially in Europe where disco music is generally underrated.

I was surprised to see a 12" being sold for that much. I know personally I wouldn't pay $1000 for the record, well any record for that fact. I think once you start paying say $20-25 or more for a used record its getting a little bit silly. Plus collecting records is like collecting any type of collectables. It is only worth that amount of money to fellow record collectors while someone not into collecting would think your nuts for paying that much for a record, no matter how rare it was. Sure its cool to own something another collector doesn't have but I think there's got to be some kind of limit.

There are two 12" promotion copy variants of D. Ross "Love Hangover"..One is a double A side on Motown PR-15 which came out first...Shortly thereafter, the one currently listed that you provided a link to is the D. Ross/M. Gaye on PR-16...THERE ARE BOOTLEGS OF THE PR-16 FLOATING AROUND.. This seller is very reputable and I have dealt with him on several occassions in the past...

As for Toto..I found this 12" at a local used record store a few months back and I was lucky to find it, the clerk did'nt know what he had and I bought it for five dollars...He looked in the price guide, which to my luck does'nt list commercial/promo 12" singles, so he went by the 45 single price..There is no priceguide out that I'm aware of that prices 12" singles, let alone promos...So ppl are now listing them as "Buy It Now" and basing prices on past auction results...Any Late 70's rock promo is going to be worth a pretty penny to a collector, because they were pressed in limited numbers and were solely (In Most Cases) distributed to radio stations..
