you dance so fine- and youre right on time- girl you ought to be on TV: on SOUL TRAIN

you know that line from Johnnie Taylor's DISCO LADY went over well on :

    (at 1:09 to be exact)

DISCO LADY is one of many smart breezy songs ( CHEAPER TO KEEP HER . WHO's MAKING LOVE being others ) Johnnie Taylor released under the guidance of long time Stax producer Don Davis .

Johnnie's trademark cool and smooth vocal delivery is matched brilliantly here by the equally slick music that defines DISCO LADY . That extra dab of coolness found here is most likely due to the person who joined Don Davis in arranging it .
That fellow was David Van DePitte -- the arranger behind Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON LP.

first to update the video link :

now , there is a very suspicious reissue being offered on ebay:

    $(KGrHqUOKj0E6W3guli+BOssE1H+MQ~~60_12.JPG

I find it very hard to believe that there was this DJ promo 12" pressing ... with this 7:44 !!!! version.
If so , SHAME ON US for not working this record more and letting it chart into disco's TOP 10 !!

Now another weird thing that I see on this label is that half of the arranging credit goes to Fred Wesley ..... as in James Brown !!!

    Is this true ??
I see no such matching credit on any of the DISCO LADY labels shown at discogs.

And Wiki doesn't mention Fred Wesley either , but does mention that members of Parliament- Funkadelic play on the recording including Bootsy Collins himself.

    AND

    *** look ! Marky, look! ***

Wiki also states that DISCO LADY was the first song with the word DISCO in its title to go to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 .

(or did we know that already .... !! ............ I bet we did )

also the LP it was from was EARGASM , not FARGASM

    Update:

OK it does appear that there was a post(hit)humous 12" release of DISCO LADY in 1977 as the back side of LOVE IS BETTER IN THE AM and the length of it says 7:44 .... must be an unimpressive (??) extension of the song rather than a remix ... (??) .... still would like to hear it though .... and NO , Fred Wesley is NOT mentioned on this Canadian pressing .

I have the commercial copy of this. It's not a remix...the extended parts are in the second half and really well done because I can't figure out where the edits actually happen. There's an added chorus within that "aw shake shake" ending but because of Taylor's ad libs and the guitar licks, this elongated ending really doesn't sound all that repetitious and has a nice flow to it....although overall, the song doesn't need to be this long. I've always loved the short instrumental intro and wish that that could have been thrown in 2/3 the way through for a nice break. Arrangement is listed as Don Davis and David Van DePitte.

thank you for that info DK . Tragic , I say that a decent remix didn't accompany that song when it was hot . I guess CBS felt they didn't need to court the disco 'round to make this song happen , and true enough that single was the first ever to be certified platinum.

But someone at Columbia made the effort to created this longer version to be hocked a year later ..... but who?? (no mix credit given ) and why? - I guess the answer to that shall forever be a mystery.

You still make me want to hear it, but I understand completely DK , your thought about reusing the intro later in the song . That could've been a GREAT remix and might've even given the song a come back.

    LONG VERSION 1977

OK listened to it .... it is rather smooth and doesn't seem as looped as some elongated mixes ....I'd be quite willing to listen to this one driving up HWY ONE to Big Sur !!

Would still treasure a Walter Gibbons mix .... can you imagine!!!!

    another thought
love the oft repeated "ahhhhh, shake it shake it" line starting at 5:36

makes one wonder : (me anyway) : if this song's "ahhhhs " inspired the Chic "ahhhhs" of LE FREAK.......... could be !!!

Don't know where that talking at the start came from on this clip unless it was on the promo version...my copy is just the nice clean intro without the dialogue.

This long mix would have greatly benefited with an instrumental section to give the dancer a break from Johnnie's vocal. It would have really created some atmosphere on the floor plus help to break it away from the radio-friendly stigma that it would have had back then.

Funny (but not the good funny) how times have really changed....now the music in the clubs (North American) rely on pop radio recognition. There seems to be a whole new generation who don't understand the concept of unfamiliar, club-oriented music.
