Among the most memorable (which is not to say GOOD) lines I can never get out of my head is:

"...said knife and fork to sausage roll, 'It's creaky in the middle'"
[Chaz Jankel, "Glad to know You", 1982]

Any profound interpretation is welcomed... :)

The fact that Chaz was a member of Ian Dury's Blockheads gives you some idea of where (where ever it was!) he was coming from!

No, no! It's "Clams on the half-shell and rollerskates, rollerskates" ! That second mention of "rollerskates" is the (funniest? Most memorable? funkiest? discoiest?) thing about it--you can't leave that off! :icon_lol:

"Somebody pulled the plug outta the socket". I was 16 when NYC had that Black Out back in '76. I was in my Sophomore Year of High School (East Orange High School), and it was also the year I started DJ'ing.

But: "When The Lights When Out", by The Trammps didn't get really get good to me until the middle:

"Maybe a Train...Where were you, ooo, ooo, ooo, where were you? Or in a Airplane...Where were you, ooo, ooo, ooo, where were you? Or maybe an Office Building...Where were you, ooo, ooo, ooo, where were you? Or maybe at a Disco, when all the lights when out!!! Hey man you stepped on my foot!!!":icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:

Then the percussions would come in, and if you had two of these, you could have a ball, and make a 15 minute extension of it, because the crowd would love it!!!

you say you've had enough and you want out
    nobody's stopping you
so why do you stand there, looking about
    nobody's stopping you

the door is there, here's your coat
keep the car and the letters I wrote
    you'll be sad, but Babe, I won't
so I want you to know...

    nobody's stopping you
    (you've got the green light)
    nobody's stopping you
    nobody's stopping you
    (get outta my sight)
    nobody's stopping you

    you hesitate, you act surprised
    that nobody's stopping you
what did you want? applause? a prize?
    nobody's stopping you

the tears I've cried, they're all gone
and Baby, I've known all along
when things got tough, you'd be gone
so I want you to know...

    nobody's stopping you
    (you've got the green light)
    nobody's stopping you
    nobody's stopping you
    (get outta my sight)
    nobody's stopping you

funny how the leaving seems so easy
'til you have to face that closing door
but I ain't gonna stand around here, pleading
like I've done a hundred times before

    nobody's stopping you
    (you've got the green light)
    nobody's stopping you
    nobody's stopping you
    (get outta my sight)
    nobody's stopping you

    I've opened myself now
and I've accepted it, finally, that this is all of me
and all the sides make up what I am
and either I live with it
or I don't live with it
whether I like it, or not...

    we live to the rhythm

    love to the rhythm
    slave to the rhythm!!!

    and now, ladies and gentlemen

Re: Stellar One-liners... Verses you can't forget... Lyrics' Greatest Hits...

about a year after I'd left NYC for Miami, this verse summed it all up, perfectly, for me...

this city-desert makes you feel so cold
    it's got so many people
    but it's got no soul

and it's taken you so long
to find out you were wrong
when you thought it held everything

you used to think that it was so easy
you used to say that it was so easy
    but you're trying
    you're trying now

another year and then you'll be happy
just one more year and then you'll be happy
    but you're cryin'
    you're cryin' now

then I found my way back to Manhattan...

and when you wake-up, it's a new morning
the sun is shining, it's a new morning
    and you're going
    you're going home

the 12" of this was a rather elite piece of Morning Music and whenever I played it, or danced to it, my eyes would, invariably, well-up by the end

    Ya know what?
Sometimes you talk so much, you really act like you're more than one person
    (i am, I am, I Am, I AM)
    you sure..., you do it
I just wish you could get that message
Hey, I'm... All I'm doin' is gettin' myself...
I'm gettin' myself together for you, baby
I mean, do you want me to come downstairs with rollers in my hair?
    Huh? Really?
I have to get together for you, baby. Because if I don't,
    you'll look at somebody else
    And when we go out...
I wanna be ALL that you see

I may not be there when you want me
I may not be there when you need me
I may not be there when you want me
    But I'm right on time!

Oooh, Lordy! I am a total junkie for good lyrics.
When they tell a good story, or go a bit deeper than the usual "Dance, Dance, Dance", "Love, Love, Love" stuff, I'll find myself dancing to the lyrics as much as any rhythm track.
