Stellar One-liners... Verses you can't forget... Lyrics' Greatest Hits...

A fairly self-explanatory thread, about the phrases that burn into our memories...

"All this fascination with leather and lace,
Is just a smoke from another fire"

"And I suppose you thought it was all over
    no, no, no, no..."

"No sense in wasting my life.
You go home, take care of your wife
And I'll take care of me, from now on..."

"And I've almost stopped running to answer the door
Don't reach to hold you, that much, no more
Don't follow cars like yours...for more than a block, or two."

"Can't you understand when a person tries,
    You say something nice."

Re: Stellar One-liners... Verses you can't forget... Lyrics' Greatest Hits...

I get chills everytime I hear the following lines:

"There will be another song for me
    For I
    will sing it
There will be another dream for me
    Someone will bring it
    I
will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at
    the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my
    life
    You'll still be the one".
    dance the night away!

Hey, Stephen (and kubanito) . . . after the guessing game's thru, can ya'll post a subsequent msg that names the songs you quoted. Thanks (and I'll try to remember to do the same). Here's mine that's "boint" into this New Orleans' boy's memory:

"Someone pulled the plug outta the socket,
Safe to say I went to the door to lock it,
And took my lady by the hand,
and led her to Loveland, loveland, loveland . . ."

"When you played those long love scenes, your kiss could stop the show,
I had the best seat in the house,
and when the lights came up, you were the first one to know. . ."

    "He ain't got no competition,
Only he writes my prescription . . ."

Hard to fathom that Jimmy Webb was at most ... 22 years old when he wrote something so sagely.

    I didn't intend it to be a guessing-game.
Originally, I had the credits to the quotes. But it distracted from the impact of the written words. So I removed them, to let the lyric stand alone.
My intentions were about a line, or lyric that, on some level, touches you deeply. Both, within and out-of the context of the song. Wherein the Artist and music become, momentarily, secondary to the lyric.

    Otherwise, my remembrances came from...
    Sheena Easton
    Alec R. Costandinos
    Alma Faye Brooks
    Bettye Lavette
    Donna Summer

"The Greatest Show On Earth" was arrange so perfectly, to fit the mood of the story. So simple and sad. Though I was never happy with her giving-in, at the end of the song.

    Some of my favorites :

So girl if you see him - You might think that you need him
He might look like the average guy - But he's wanted by the F.B.I.

I've seen everything there is - I've done everything there is
I've met everyone but Liz - Now I've even met ol' Liz
No time for relationship - Skip the foreplay,Let 'er rip
    You gotta beat the clock...

When that love explosion comes - my oh my we want to be someone...

I hate to tell you but I got a bit of bad news
I don't love you no more
You see life is like a circle
Everything you do comes back to you...

    I'm doing fine - I get along
You were the one who said that I should be strong
I'm sorry that we ever met - I'm doing all I can to forget...

I got my education - I got determination
I got imagination - Come on give me a break...
    I'm a woman I deserve a better shake
What you won't give...I will take

Gonna get your heart - You can't get free
Cuz you got love in the 1st degree
And I sentence you to eternity - Cuz you've been found guilty
There ain't no way you're gonna get loose
So don't you try - It ain't no use
You're caught in a trap and you can't get back
So you better be cool and take the rap.

Hey you over there, Get off off that chair, The Discos made for dancing and not to sit and stare. Get down on the dance floor and let your body move, when the musics playing loud, you'll get into the groove. Get up and boogie.

(So true, I could never be that dull and just sit down when I was at the Houston Disco's in the 70's. My feet and bootie could not be still when they were jamming.)

    Luv these lyrics/songs.....:icon_cool:

Carlos and Carmen Vidal just had a child
A lovely girl with a crooked smile
Now they gotta split 'cause the Bronx ain't fit
For a kid to grow up in
Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away
With no blacks, no Jews and no gays

I was just alone and mad
with a suitcase in my hand
part of the travelling band on the road
( And I was always away from you)

    I never needed anyone
My music, It was my fun
But I woke up late at night to regret it
    Oh-Oh-Oh

    Someone
left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
    'cause it
took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again

Eins zwei drei vier funf sechs sieben acht

    Uno due treis quattro
    One two
    Ichi ni san chi

Over by the window, there's a pack of cigarettes.
    Not my brand you understand,
    Sometimes the girl forgets
    She forgets to hide them
I know who left those smokes behind
    She'll say, oh, he's just a friend,
And I'll say, oh, I'm not blind
    to..

Stephen, you are confusing two "theatrical" songs...

The lyrics are from "I Caught Your Act."

Re: Stellar One-liners... Verses you can't forget... Lyrics' Greatest Hits...

The clever, risque for 1976, tongue-in-cheek, witty lyrics of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band should get mentioned:

Some of my fave lines included in "I'll Play The Fool & "Cherchez La Femme"...

"Ain't it funny what a little love can do...it's better than poison, so much stronger than glue"
"I'll play the fool for you--buy you things that I cannot afford.."
"And I'm gonna go to school for you boy--just to get my equivalency diploma"

"Tommy Mottola lives on the run...blowin' his mind on cheap grass and wine, oh ain't it crazy baby yeah"
"They'll tell you a lie with a Colgate smile--hey hey baby"
"But she goes next door--you know she just plays the whore..."
"They're all the same--all the SLUTS & the SAINTS...poor misery uh oh Cherchez la Femme"

Did Jimmy Webb write that part of the song, too? I thought all the "middle" stuff of the Suite was new material by Moroder/Bellote/Summer. Hmmm...

    marky,

thanks for quoting from "Cherchez La Femme", as the references to whores and sluts and cheap grass sure was fairly risque for a disco classic that also made the top 40 on pop radio in '76. Casey Kasem must've had a minor coronary on his show during the song's travels to a #27 peak:icon_eek:

And Remicks, the initial song of mine that (temporarily) escaped your memory was . . . The Night The Lights Went Out by the Trammps. (I just love a tune that combines real life -- the July 13, 1977 NYC blackout -- and enhances it with a tale of taking advantage of the darkness by making luhhhhhve with your favorite partner).

    A couple classics:

I shoulda changed that stupid lock
I shoulda made you leave your key
If I'd a known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me -- I Will Survive

Cuz when the guitar player starts playin' with the syncopated rhythm with the scratch, scratch, scratch
makes me wanna move my body, yeah, yeah, yeah
And when the drummer starts beatin' that beat beatin' out that beat with the syncopated rhythm
with the rat tat tat tat tat tat on the drum, heeeyy!! -- Turn The Beat Around

Possibly, one of the most pointedly-direct verses I've ever heard, in a Disco song:

You get a tune in the movies
And go to Platinum, and back
And they get to keep the returns and awards
    With some off-Broadway hack :icon_eek:

They say there all going to sell-out
    But they buy-back, instead
    It got me so crazy
I needed a job, just to buy-back my head

Was that Rick Dees' follow-up to "Disco Duck"? (after the song was used in Saturday Night Fever but not put on the soundtrack album)
