Artists That Went From This: ---???--- To: DISCO!!!

    *****

Here's an idea for an ongoing thread .... which should be especially effective thanks to the referred music's availability on youtube (hopefully ... and until the music Nazis step in and demand deletion of course) .....

Its giving examples of artists and their music before they did disco ..... and then examples of their music when they did .

The following is I think a pretty extreme case and one that 'd be most hard, probably even impossible --- to top (yes, that's a challenge ) .......................... (however, doing so isn't really the point ) :

The artist is Daniel Boone, a one hit wonder on Billboard's Hot 100 with a jig like tune called BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY which went to #15 in August of 1972:

    Daniel Boone: Beautiful Sunday

But as the years passed Daniel evolved from simply basking in the sunlight of those beautiful sunny Sunday days ....

.....to ultimately catching the sweet & sweaty fever of long musky Saturday nights :

... welcome to the dark side, .....Daniel.....

How's that for expanding one's musical horizons !!

OK ......... who else! went from ....???.......to: DISCO !! :icon_mrgreen:

    ******

    disclaimer :
I'm presuming ... no proof ... don't know him ... that this is the one and the same Daniel Boone.... discogs thinks so ....( ever tried googling someone named ......Daniel Boone!!!!!!?)

thanks, remicks, for the info on when "Daniel Boone" went over to the dark (and more fun) side of music. Loved me some "Beautiful Sunday" back in the day, and had no idea he went the disco route.

The most out-from-left-field jump into disco I can think of right now is . . . . when the Mighty Clouds of Joy stepped outside their gospel comfort zone and recorded "Mighty High" in 1975 (off their "Kickin" LP). It topped the disco charts in January 1976, becoming one of the bigger disco hits of the year (and even garnered them a tv spot on Soul Train).

They came to Jazzfest around '97 and I got to interview 'em, and the lead singer recalled how when he heard the bass line of "Mighty High" as they were about to record it, he knew in an instant that it was going to be a hit, that it was going to vastly broaden their existing fan base, and that they were going to piss off some gospel purists (all 3 happened, and more!). When they played "Mighty High" inside the Gospel Tent of Jazzfest that spring day approx. 12 years ago, he told the audience, "this ones for the youngsters in the crowd." A fine memory of a really fine song.:icon_cool:

Let's not forget, Gene Chandler. He started out as a Doo Wop singer in the 60's with his first hit being "Duke of Earl", and had other hits such as "Rainbow" and "Groovy Situation". His version of James Brown's "There was a Time" wasn't too shabby either.

But in '78, he came out with "Get Down", which was a huge hit for him, and fit right in with the Disco Scene. That break down in the middle is a KILLER!!! It's real fun to play with, if you have two of them!!!

Well, here's one person who had me scratching my head, once I found out who he was....

Bruce Johnston : "Pipeline" from the Beach Boys

And that was coming from songs like this...

Beach Boys: Wouldn't It Be Nice

Don't get me wrong I love the Beach Boys but, what was Bruce smokin' when he sat down and said "i'ma write a song called Pipeline:icon_smile:

Remmy, Bruce didn't write "Pipeline"; it's a cover of a surfin' instrumental by The Chantays from the early Sixties...the "Wipeout" era....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banzai_Pipeline

    from AMG:

"Pipeline," which went on to become one of the biggest and best instrumental surf hits ever recorded. Its simple yet memorable melody and beautiful guitar line -- lyrical yet evoking excitement and motion -- and deceptively complex embellishments, all backed by a highly animated and propulsive bass part, made it naturally appealing in the musical landscape of the time. Additionally, the record had a very natural sound that made it seductive to the ear. One reason for its success may have been the fact that, so the story goes, it was actually recorded in the back of a particular surf shop (where the original master tape was reportedly found more than 25 years later) -- perhaps it was just a practical decision to cut the song there, or they were seeking some kind of psychic verisimilitude, but if it is true, it didn't hurt the finished product one bit.

Whoops!:icon_redface: thanks for clearing that up Marky, nevertheless I doubt if the original version sounded like the Bruce's funked up rendition:icon_lol:

Re: Group called "Technique " Can we Try Again
This is waht I know. Technique (or Teknique) started as a sideproject from Daniel Boone and rocksinger David Byron (of Uriah Heep fame). It has been said that the female vocals on the singles and album are from david and daniel's wives! The did a few singles and an album in 1983.

    Teknique - Michael Angelo, 7" 1979
Teknique - Looking For Someone to Love (Tonight), 12" 1979
Technique - Can We try Again, 7" 1983
Technique - Michael Angelo, LP 1983

Daniel and David also did some other disco/futuristic pop projects:

    The Warlord - Ultimate Warlord, 7" 1979
Intergalactic Orchestra - Star Probe Navigator, 7" 1981
Intergalactic Orchestra - Super Nova, LP 1981

    Hope this info helps.....

Before he became the creator extraordinaire of camp funky disco classics by the likes of Sister Sledge, Stacey Lattisaw, Patti Austin & Angie Bofill, Narada Michael Walden was the drummer with jazz-rock fusion group Mahavishnu Orchestra!:icon_eek:

Another one you could add is Engelbert Humperdinck. He went from "Release Me, Quando Quando Quando" and "The Last Waltz" to disco versions of the following:
    • The Most Beautiful Girl (the Charlie Rich country song)
    • Love Me Tender (the Elvis song)
    • Love's In Need of Love Today (Stevie Wonder song)
Plus while not disco per se, in 1998 he released a complete album of dance music called "The Dance Album".

I s'pose Sheila of B.Devotion fame made quite a leap from the music she was doing in the 60s & earlier 70s to the eurodisco stuff that we all know her for.

I remember this distinctly, because it was one of Chris Cox's first Productions, after he left Hot Tracks. (...right before he stopped working for Moroder?:icon_confused:)

So he sent me really early, pre-release product. And to be very honest... It's not a bad LP. Not as good as you'd like it to be, but nowhere near as bad as it had the potential to be.

Either way... Here's a rather hysterical review of the LP that I came across. It's not how I feel about the LP, but it's really funny, none-the-less.

For me, however, the quintessential guilty pleasure from Engelbert Humperdinck will always be his rendition of "Lesbian Seagull" from the Beavis & Butthead film soundtrack in the mid-90s. He earnestly belts out the hilarious lyrics without too, too much camp, and the result is priceless

During the disco glut of 1978, Bill Anderson, a Country music star and game show host (NBC's "The Better Sex" with Sarah Purcell) released a "disco/country" horror entitled "I Can't Wait Any Longer". It was far worse than Dolly Parton's "Baby I'm Burning", but Anderson even managed to appear on "Soap Factory", lip-synching while doing some sort of octogenarian hustle.
This was not one of disco's better moments.

Ah yes .....known as "Whispering Bill" Anderson for his softly delivered , often spoken vocals as heard on this racy Top 5 country song from 1976 shared with Mary Lou Turner

he got a little louder when he went disco :

it does have a certain disco familiarity about it
