Bob A Rella and Rupert Holmes Questions

Ok everyone, first question...Does anyone know any info on Bob A Rella as in was it a group or a person and is there more than the 1 LP which I finalllllllllllllly found after a looooong time of searching a few weeks back in a store mixed in with a bunch of oldies and christmas records in some store here in Tempe for a buck!!! and the record was pure mint..I thought I was dreaming lol. I only knew "Stop" off this LP until I got it and id have to say "Why Does It Rain" is a kick ass track and you can do a nice mix between that and Paul Jabara's "Disco Divorse".

Second Question...Was there ever a 12" extended version or disco mix for "Him" by Rupert Holmes? If so I need to track it down.

It was a Pat Desario/George Lagios studio production, like the second Bombers LP. I believe there was only one LP, on the short-lived Channel label. There was also a 12", but I haven't seen or heard this.

BTW, the name is spelled Bob-A-Rela on the sleeve, but Bob-A-Rella on the label. :-?

I've never heard of a 12" of 'Him' by Rupert Holmes I'm afraid but there was a really good Hi-energy version from 1983 by a female singer called Simone if you're interested. Rupert also was behind the disco 12" from 1979 called 'Do It In The Dark' by Shobizz which I think is rather good but I may be on my own here as I've never heard anyone else anywhere say they like it! :-?

There is a 12" of Bob-a -Rella's "why does it rain" and I believe "Tobacco Road" on the flip, I have it around here some place, I used to play it but it was not a hit for me, more of a nice obscure 'small label' dance track at the time, I just pulled the LP (nice cover!)and it looks like new, I also played ShoBizz's "Do it in the dark" RCA 12" this one was better received.

Would you happen to know if these are the LP versions? I'm curious to know if this is worth seeking out. I quite like "Spend The Night". And their take on Pink Floyd's "Money", with the time signature changed to 3/4 is, uh, interesting.

GrahamStart: Tobacco Road (Channel CD 106D - A) was the official A side and clocks in at 6.05. Why Does It Rain has a running time of 8.06
Both sides state that they are Disco Re-Mixes and " A Riichie Rivera Midnight Mix".
Both were not much played by me, but an interesting disc to have I guess.

Im looking at my LP right now and Tobacco Road is only 4:49 on the LP and Why Does It Rain has no time given?????? Do I have a manufacturing **** up copy or was that on all of them? If "Why Does It Rain" is longer on the 12" I wanna track it down..I may have to clock the LP version and see what the time is. Looking at the grooves it looks like an 8 min track cause if thats the case adding the last 2 songs together would make it an aproxamite 19 min sided record which is average. But the A side of that 12 is defenatly diff for sure.

    Graham,

I have the album and 12" of "Why Does it Rain" and they are very different. It's not just the length since Rivera did some interesting spacey overlays on the 12 of "WDIR." You really need both :-)

This 12 inch is featured in the Disco Records Vault at

'Do It In The Dark' by Shobizz was written, arranged, conducted & co-produced by Rupert Holmes according to my US 12" copy on Capitol records. I love US imports 'cos theyre always 33 rpm & have superior sound quality to UK copies IMO.
