During my decades of living & working in tourist cities, I got to know my international "regulars", who'd show-up at the clubs I worked in, year-after-year. Particularly, in the South Florida cities. In Fort Lauderdale, Berndt from Cologne, Germany came into Tacky's every year. On Miami Beach, I recall Pierre from Montreal, coming into The Seagull Hotel, every winter. (quote Pierre: "This is the best Disco in South Florida. But you couldn't pay me to sleep in the Hotel!") And in Miami there was Ian, from Manchester, UK, whom I adored. (And had a mad crush on!) Ian came to see me at Uncle Charlie's/Miami, faithfully, every 2 years, when his holiday plans included a trip to 'America'.
Being a DJ in an established club, in a major tourist city, is particularly challenging because you don't have the luxury of pleasing some of the people, all of the time, as you would, being a Circuit DJ. As an In-House DJ, it was about the tight-rope-walk of pleasing all of the people, some of the time, without having anyone walk out the door. And Ian loved that I played so much European music, as well as the US hits. His quote that stayed with me was: "Everyone back home has all the Sinitta, Kylie and Jason Donovan records. They just won't admit it. Those are the records you hide under the sofa, when company comes. But in America, what we call "Pop" music, you call "Hi-NRG". And there's a bit of exclusivity attached to it here. So we can all dance like crazy fools when we hear it it over here and not care if anyone's watching. But you're the only one who plays as much of it, as you do. So, the boys-on-holiday know to come by Uncle Charlie's, when they're in Miami."
So... I ask you... What's your Disco-Guilty-Pleasure?
And I don't mean, just something that you're in the minority for appreciating.
I mean...
What's your Disco-Dance-Dirty-Little-Secret?
Do you treasure your collection of every "Hooked On..." that was ever released?
Do you think that The Trammps just weren't all that great?
Or that Moroder is totally overrated. (But are hesitant to say so, for fear of finding dead-fish at your door?)
Do you own the biggest collection of Porn Soundtrack Disco, of anyone you know?
Are you a compulsive collector of Bollywood Disco?
...Did you, quietly, obtain all the NINI Nobless releases, after he/she/it was unearthed on the Forum, some months back?
Well??? Did you?? Hmmmmm...?
Whatever it is... This is not a Forum for arguing merit, or criticizing peoples' taste. It's simply a Disco safe-place, to state whatever you're passionate about. But have yet to come across a thread, or avenue of discussion, wherein your particular weakness is referred-to, in a positive light. But you really want to put your baby in print.
Because, after all...
If a fully pierced, heavily tatt'd, 3-time National Leather Title Holder (let me beat you to it: "Sash Queen") and NPC placing bodybuilder, can admit that he's an incurable, unapologetic and totally addicted Girlie-Girl Disco junkie... Then anyone can come out of their respective Disco-closet, and say... "To hell with reputation! Screw public opinion! I live for _______!"
So, let me start things off with, direct from the genre's biggest fan:

"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
"Love Letter" by Giggles (1987)
"How To Dance" by Bingo Boys feat. Princessa (1991)
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
Okay... I confess, that I really, really like side one of "Lime 3".
I know it's all tongue in cheek, but imo you shouldn't be ashamed of, or have to apologise about what you enjoy listening to, or be concerned about what others might think of your choice.
No pun to this party, but in general i've seen too many topics online about people labeling artists as "overrated" in their opinion, and those particualr topics were all a big joke to me.
Music is about subjective choice and taste. Ya like what ya like.
Anyways, my 2 cents and party on !

I never read something about this record, on this board evah! I never heard a DJ actually playing it.
okay, Stephen . . . since you've anointed this thread as a "safe haven" from judgment by disco devils everywhere . . . I'll take the deep breath and admit that included in my top 5 disco songs of all time is . . .(gulp)
"Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, to which I always have great fun inserting "karate chops" and "side kicks" when dancing to it.
Whew . . . thanks for letting me share. Weight now off my shoulders![]()
Hmmm.... most of the disco I have falls under the more "poppy" category, and much of it would be considered embarrassing to non-disco types, and much of it might be considered somewhat embarrassing to this crowd. I don't have anywhere near the disco collection of some of the people here, especially those of you who were/are disco DJs. (I only recognize a handful of the artists on your Girlie-Girl list, Stephen, let alone the song titles)
Probably the most embarrassing (in any company) disco that I actually like is "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots. Yes, I own it - vinyl and cd, I listen to it, and I like it. It's part of my childhood... what can I say?(And, as above, I also like "Kung-Fu Fighting", but not as much)
Possibly more scandalous, on this board, is that somewhere among all of my other boxed up vinyl 45s I do have a crackly copy of Steve Dahl's "Do Ya Think I'm Disco?" :icon_eek: It's not something I'd listen to often, though, so I don't think it's really a "guilty pleasure".
Now, if you want to talk guilty pop pleasures, I have all seven of..... The Partridge Family albums on cd :icon_redface: and I LOVE them! They're great pop songs and the production and musicianship are fantastic.
But I digress....

Girlie-Girl Disco was most definitely a late 80's, European phenomenon. But check out the "expanded list" link. There's links to videos for almost all the tracks on the list. And they really are great fun!
The arrangement on "Disco Duck" is really very good!I'd own a copy of the instrumental pro 12", if it didn't mean having to skip a mortgage payment to do it! Have you seen how much that record goes for???:icon_eek:
BRAVO! Now that's the spirit.

Dancin' helps relieve the pain, soothes your mind, makes you happy again
Uh-oh! I guess that means my playing Dame Shirley's "Never Never Never" repeatedly and getting shivers up my spine whenever she belts, "I love to hate you love you hate you love you hate you love you hate you love you hate you love to hate you, but there's nothing in the world like you," is guilty pop pleasure at its finest!

Brian, I have most of the Partridge Family's albums on CD too. OMG....can you say "Echo-Valley 25809", "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" and one of their most overlooked gems, "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love"???
I love the early '70s pop! :icon_razz:
Discokicks, love "Disco Lucy" too!![]()

When people come to my apartment they expect to see Heather Parisi's "Disco Bambina" or "Blue Nights of Valencia" by Isobel nonchalantly tossed next to the Technics, ready to play, but not "Disco Lypso" by Mandrill, which I also happen to love. I'm a closet soulboy on alternate thursdays.
I've got all 3 of the Disco versions of "My Life (La Vita)", but "Never, Never, Never" is hands-down, without a doubt, my ABSOLUTE favorite Bassey recording. I get goose-pimply just thinkin' 'bout it.
Oooh... Did you know that the title track from her 1979 LP (with the Disco version of "My Life"), "The Magic Is You", was written by Alec R. Costandinos?![]()

what an adjective !!! (Love Boatesque). Love that, Salsoul1975 :icon_cool:
Well, gentlemen... Although, as a Disco version, it remained infinitely truer to the T.V. theme's original arrangement (which is exactly why it was the bigger hit)... The Wilton Place Street Band's 1976 recording of "Disco Lucy", on Island Records, was not the original.
Mere months prior, in December of 1975, ***The New York Rubber Rock Band released "Disco Lucy(I Love Lucy / Desi's Samba Medley)", on the Henry Street Disc Company label.
***TNYRRB later recorded Disco versions of the Pop classics "Hello Stranger", in 1976 and "Peanuts", in 1977.
Lead vocalist 'Colleen Heather' (with TNYRRB Producer, Bob Motta) would go on to release a solo LP, 'Heartbreaker' on WestEnd Records, in 1979. The double-12" promo pack of which, contained the Walter Gibbons remix of the highly collectable cult-classic "One Night Love Affair".

In my early disco years,I had a "thing" for the
bubblegum club moments-once in awhile the DJ
would throw me a bone to lighten things up,and
I would run for the dance floor while my friends would
run and hide. They are : "Love Really Hurts Without You"
Billy Ocean,"Right Back to Where We Started"Maxine
Nightingale,"Boogie Fever" the Sylvers,"Who Loves
You" and "December 1963"The Four Seasons,"You Make
me Feel Like Dancin' Leo Sayers and lastly "BabyFace"
by Wing and a Prayer. All of these still make me teeth
hurt but I love em' all!
Thom
Thom, as a radio-listening kid back in the day, those are the kinds of disco-pop songs that I remember, along with all the usual Donna Summer, Chic, Bee Gees, etc. suspects. I still love all that stuff. I never heard Dan Hartman, Bohannon, Musique or Loleatta Holloway on the radio.
I had "Baby Face" on a K-Tel album back in 1976, but I haven't seen it on cd anywhere.
Brian
Boney M.
Seriously. I love them. Except when I hate them.
And then there's Bobby's demented choreography.
Now that the formerly "cheesy" but now sparkly and beloved ABBA has moved up in critical esteem (hurray!), that leaves only this other world-dominating 70s pop group to be rehabilitated. I don't think it's gonna happen...Some of their tracks are perfect pop constructions and others are fetid Twinkies. They really would do anything to sell a record.
Best song? A B-side called "A Woman Can Change A Man". I would so love to have that on CD! Worst song? Hmm...that's a tough one, but I'll go with "The Calendar Song," for sheer poverty of imagination.
Not very disco, but I also adore "This Is the Way That I Feel," by Miss Marie Osmond. Also sadly missing from the digital world. And then I too must show the love for "Baby Face" (sorrysorrysorry, Marky!).
There's got to be more...maybe one of the other posters will jog my memory!
Make that feeling come again!
Svend
