Cool Studio 54 Clubhouse - The Last Show

For those who don't know KTU was the #1 FM radio station in the 70's and through the present in New York. Joe was there at the beginning of the Disco era and right through 7/18/04 when KTU decided that they would no longer carry Disco/Dance based programming. The link below is to the last Disco show hosted by Brooklyn’s own Joe Causi, the voice of Disco/Dance in New York for over 30 years.

Fortunately Joe continues his gig on WCBS radio in New York and Sirius radio The Strobe largely in part to the actions taken by discomusic.com members to force Sirius to realize they made a big mistake by removing the Strobe and Disco music.

Oh man!! The first song, "There'll Come A Time, There'll Come A Day" is one of my favorites from the Super Rare Disco cds. Was there more from Basic Black and Pearl, or were they a one-shot single?

This is really a great broadcast! I didn't even know KTU no longer airs the Studio 54 show. Just goes to show you how much I listen to KTU. Of course, its best years for me (when it was the NEW KTU-having returned to the airwaves in early 1996) were 1996-2001.

Max... Thanks Man, I love those classic disco songs... and The Ron Butler & The Ramblers tune is one of my all time favs :icon_cool:

Brian... As far as I know Basic Black & Pearl released another 45 single: "Right on Baby"/White Christmas... The latter is rather cheesy and forgettable, however "Right on Baby" is imo quite enjoyable, not as good as "There'll come a time, There'll come a day" though.

Thanks for the brilliant youtube. I'm a big fan of Joe Causi. and KTU. I didn't hit New York City till 1987, but I taped a lot of the shows from Hot97 which then moved to KTU and 103.5. I have tons of tapes of Joe's Studio 54 Clubhouse and even some from his Mix102 years. Also have dozens of tapes from the Saturday Night Funhouse, many I have to listen and mark still.

Sadly, KTU has dropped it's weekend disco mix shows in the last few years. They recently dropped Johnny Rocks and while the wonderful Jenny Costa is still there, it seems her mixes and playlist are being dictated to her. The midday mix has gotten bland of late. Still, if you're reading this Jenny, much love to you and Diane.

Are you referring to the Funhouse mixes Jellybean did that aired on KTU Saturday nights from 6-10 pm? Those were the best! I also taped them, but unfortunately I didn't tape all the songs (the ones that did nothing for me I erased). Those tapes are long gone now; wish I still kept them. Back then, my knowledge of the real obscure cuts was limited. Had I known more about them, I would've taped them.

All my tapes are from after March '87. I'm not sure if there are Jellybean mixes, but I'll pull them out this winter/spring and check them out. The Funhouse was on Hot 97 and then the new KTU 103.5. If I remember, it was from 7-9pm. But these were not really obscure songs, at least to me. Also known as The Saturday Nite Dance Factory.

WBLS sometimes rebroadcasts their old mix shows on Saturday nites. Keep an eye on the Radio column in the New York Daily News or the WBLS website.

I also taped some of the Jammin' 105 mixes from about 5-7 years ago. They were on Saturday nights and were really good and reinvented some of the old standards. I think Lord Of Flatbush mixed some of those.

Here's a link to something I posted a couple of years ago. Click where it says "Original Hot 97" in blue. It's a mix of today's dance music and the old Hot 97 songs. They might (not sure) play some of the old mixes on the weekends. Check them out.

Thanks for the info, Jow. I wish there was an album(s), but at least I won't feel like I'm missing out on much.

I know what you mean Salsoul about the tapes. I used to loan lots of them out, and never get them back. But fortunately, I still have enough left to enjoy. I started out recording DJ Ted Currier on WBLS, back in '78. He's the one who started the late night mixes. Believe it or not, I still have a casette tape, dated Apr. 23, 1979 from one of PACO'S broadcasts. What's so funny about the tape, is that it's one of those 3-Packs that you used to get from Woolworth's for a buck!!! Didn't even have a brand name, it just said: Compact Cassette.

That tape has some of the best classic stuff on it with: Cuba - The Gibson Brothers, Keep Your Body Working - Kleer, and the first time I heard: Disco Nights - G.Q. And of course, there's Paco with his heavy latin accent. Has anybody ever seen what Paco looked like? Well let me tell you, in my opinion, his voice didn't match his face, he looked like a Vampire!!!

During the early 80's, he used to host an afternoon show on KTU called: The Paco Super Mix, featuring The Latin Rascals. Now those cats were bad!!! This was around the time when: Jam On It - Newcleus, I Just Want It To Be Real - John Rocca, etc., etc. was out!!! And I have a few tapes of them left too.

Then 98.7 KISS came out with it's Sheppetibone mixes, and I used to record them too. One of the phattest mixes I heard him do was mix Love Is The Message - MFSB, and Don't Make Me Wait - The NYC Peach Boys together. I have to admit, I started doing it too 'cause they run so good together.

During the late 80's, I jumped on the Tony Humphries bandwagon, and waited faithfully until 12 mid-nite, to start recording. I still have a lot of his mixes left. Although, most of them fell by the wayside. I need to start transfering them to CD's, before something else happens to them.
