Question The Glow of Love - Dave Baker or Luther Vandross?

I just came across "The Glow of Love" sang by Dave Baker on Black Jack Records.

The title was apparently released Jan 1st 1980.

The only version that I knew was from Change (featuring Luther Vandross).

The words and melody are the same as the one from Change. The arrangements are slightly different.

Change has also released in 1980.

Does anyone knows which one came out first?

    Thanks

I think it would be safe to say the Change version come out first, this looks like a cash in cover version, this 12" must have been released after the Change album came out, and probably after the Change "Glow of Love" 12" was issued too.

Black Jack is reggae label and the Dave Baker version is kind of a lovers rock version of "Glow of Love" unfortunately it has what sounds like slightly whiny out of tune vocals/backing vocals - which seem to be part of the lovers rock style (well most of the time).

It's a shame the Dave Baker version is not a really good bouncy reggae cover version or it had a nice dub version, as this would make it far more interesting record.

P.S. I would not take any notice of the apparent release date of 1st January, 1980 as not many people release records on New Year's Day - it's a holiday!

In the late 70s/early 80s there were frequently 'lovers rock' versions of soul/disco hits being released on UK indie labels. A bit pointless IMO but obviously there was a market for them.

Well the Change version is the definitive original in my opinion and its really hard to beat a classic like that one, but the Dave Baker version is interesting to say the least. I like the piano overlay but a lot of the instrumentation sounds a bit too much of a jumbled mess. Might just be me as I'm not use to that version, but I think it could grow on me. Definitely an admirable attempt to do something a little different with the song.
