Chart Hit [Level 6]
With this week's Oscar nominations due Thursday (Jan. 22), wanted to point out that 2 of the 5 pics likely to grab a nomination for Best Picture of 2008 do in fact feature disco music.
As mentioned in a prior thread begun by one of our fellow members . . .the film Milk (starring Sean Penn and James Franco and Josh Brolin) has a plotline spanning the years 1970 thru 1978 and features Hues Corporation's "Rock The Boat" and Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". Both tunes are listed on the actual soundtrack in stores.
I just saw Frost/Nixon and its plot spans the years 1974 thru 1977 . . . and was surprised to hear Donna Summer's big '77 hit "I Feel Love" towards the end of the movie (most of the film's 2 hour running time takes place in 1977 -- the year of the actual interviews of the former president by David Frost). An online check of the soundtrack reveals the tune is not featured on the actual soundtrack you can buy.
Glad that the producers of these 1970s-set films at least took the time to spend some $$ acquiring the rights to play these classic disco tunes within the context of these films' historic recreations of a time we all look nostalgically upon (at least, music-wise !!!)
Look for these 2 films to figure prominently in Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, the writing categories and the Best Actor category.
Indie Release [Level 4]
Not to mention the fact that they used songs that were year-appropriate for the eras depicted in the movies. So often in movies, it seems that the people in charge of the period music think that songs are older than they really are and you get music that is a couple years newer than the time depicted onscreen.
