Oh, I was also going to mention that "I Wanna Funk With You Tonight" (or "I Wanna Fhehnk With You Tonight", as Giorgio says) sounds a LOT like 5000 Volts' "I'm On Fire" in the intro. What was it about that "Black Is Black" groove?

On a similar note, I was listening to First Choice's Greatest Hits the other night and noticed that one of the tracks was recorded in Munich with Keith Forsey on drums and the Munich Symphony strings. Sure enough, the song sounds like Silver Convention with First Choice vocals.

I'm gonna take a guess and say it's one of the tracks from the "Hold Your Horses" LP? Produced by Thor Baldursson, with Keith Forsy and Pete Bellotte? Cause that's a seriously, Munich Machine influenced production. With the exception of "Love Thang" and, maybe one other track.

Just to add a little more on edits of LTLYB. When GTO put out the Greatest Hits compilation in 1977, they cut the "reprise" or the second play of the single version. My recollection is that it clocks in around 12:40. It was this edited version that I was first familiar with, when I finally got to hear the full album version I was a little disappointed that it added nothing new.

In 1983 Casblanca in the UK edited the album version to create an 8 minute version that captures all of the elements of the album version to my mind. I think there were going to capitalise on the success of putting out the Cowley mix of I Feel Love then discovered that they were to issue She Works Hard For The Money, I got my 12inch packaged (and free) with Unconditional Love. I tried to recreate this version using the remastered version from the second disc on the UK Journey collection and it took me hours, those edits are all over the place - the "reprise" is heavily edited and actually adds something more to the song IMO.

That LP has easily my favourite Donna Summer sleeve photo with her knees under her chin & straight wig & the red background. She looks even more exotic than usual. I s'pose LTLYB had to be slightly edited as it wasn't the only track on that side of the record.

How 'bout the version of Love To Love You that came out 18 months earlier, in Spring 1974? I speak of The Payback, by James Brown, with the same bassline and cooing background vocals in the 40-second intro. Clearly the inspiration for Moroder's arrangement. Was this connection discussed back in '75 press?

Interesting! I'll have to listen to The Payback with that in mind. I never made that connection.

"For the love of money" (by the O'Jays in 1973) has a similar bassline. I think there is a thread somewhere about the songs that inspired Moroder for "Love to love you baby".

Re: Donna Summer "Love To Love You Baby" (Listing of Different Versions)

According to a live interview with Lucy Neal (of "Lucy, Betsy, Gitta", the back-up vocalists on most of the Musicland recording sessions), the bass-line for LTLYB was created on-the-spot, during the recording session, by bassist Dave King, when Pete Bellotte was having a hard time coming-up with something that "worked" for the song.

No one expected the bass-line to become as instantly recognizable as the song, itself. So, in the 90's, there was an unsuccessful lawsuit for royalties as an un-credited co-writer.

Interesting. It seems reasonably plausible that a serious studio bass musician of that time would have been well aware of and impressed by the memorable bass line in FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY ... to the degree that intentionally or not .... when inventing something "new" ..... there could be an influence .

Bassist Dave King .....his sound is certainly distinctive ....
His work, in large part, is what gives this effort that certain LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY flair :....

and whomever told that guy his low voice sounds sexy " just like Barry White" ....THEY LIED !!! :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

I listened to a radio show here last year on Donna Summer and Pete Bellote was on talking about LTLYB. He mentioned the bass line being similar to a Crusaders track but I can't remember the title of the track.

    yuppers...
It's perfect in how it builds... then it stops...

...exactly where it's supposed to stop.
The LP starts-up again (for no apparent reason, other than to make it looonger...) and loses all the impact.

Polygram UK released a 12" with the LP on side A, as Love To Love You Baby (Come On Over To My Place Version) 16:50
And side B was "A Young & Strong mega-edit" Love To Love You Baby (Come Dancing Version) 8:10

It sounded to me that they were cutting it down by evening-out the counts of each section of the mix. From 96, or 120, down to 32 & 64, for everything. Which is real tough to do on LTLYB, because the strings, horns & bv's are so heavily processed, that they always trail-off into the next measure, or two.

And they end it at the same spot as the older, GTO/GH version.

The Dutch/Groovy GH release has the same cover-photo as the UK/GTO.
GTO used the red borders & Groovy used a textured-beigeish(?) border.

But GTO put the cool custom-photos inner-sleeve in theirs.

...aaaaand I love the DMC remix of I Feel Love.
It slows-down to LTLYB, then speeds back up through "Theme From The Deep", back into I Feel Love.

    That's one hell-uv-a remix!

YouTube - The Champ's Boys Orchestra - "Tubular Bells"

I own both 7" versions releases of "LTLYB" and all three different versions include the "inhale" at the begining..(not sure now if this was in question here?):icon_eek:

The original 7" version with synths instead of Strings clocks at 3:22 ('need a man blues' on the flip)

the second short release with strings clocks at 3:27, the long version on the flip side using portions from the new LP including the added new Background vocals clocks at 4:57.

I know, at the time I tried to pinpoint Quinny on what he meant ...because it didn't make sense to say that the Champs Boys song influenced LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY since LTLYB came out before Champs Boys .
So I took from it, that Quinny meant that the Champs Boys by laying the two songs on top of each other were pointing out the obvious ....

I have to say my new found fondness has more to do with the 9.5 mid-section part found on the LP ...

and.... ( & I can't believe that such turns out to be the case ) --- especially where it seems Donna has already left the studio for the night : the Donna- less parts :icon_eek: :icon_eek: ... and of that, especially the crescendo-ing, up an octave, choral climax ending !! Just love the fuller vocal sound of those multiple angelic voices playing off that trumpet :icon_cool: )

    {That delicious part occurs at 1:43 on the youtube post }

    We got cheated .

That last part of the song I mentioned liking so much ....where Giorgio sends Donna home too early (figuratively speaking) allowing just the back-ups to sing that angelic part....... SHOULD'VE KEPT DONNA AROUND !!!

Listen to this and at 5:52 see what I mean . What a capper to this vocal journey !

To best appreciate this ... don't cheat :icon_razz: ..... just watch it all the way through - a unique & unusual live instrumentation of this song ( wah wahs, bongoing , and a flute and guitar solo! ... horn section ) to enjoy and a fantastic performance by Donna ... at her best here with this song IMO -

Well worth the ride, guaranteed ! :icon_mrgreen:
