If Disco were around today, would it win any awards?

Let's imagine for a second: Disco never left us and is still going strong among the masses. Do you believe that it would win any awards: I.E. Grammy, BET, American Music, etc?

    Just wondering...

As far as I'm concerned, it never left. It just morphed into other styles. It wouldn't be made the same way as back in the 70s because of pure economics: It's cheaper to use a synth than to hire live musicians and an orchestra, on top of the expense of booking time in a fully equipped studio (a studio that just requires a singer, because all the music is made on a keyboard is smaller and I'm guessing a whole lot cheaper than a huge studio that can accommodate dozens of musicians playing together).

No doubt about it Disco Funk, lot's of house music in the 80's were actually recorded in artists basements!!! But why is it that this genre of music is never entered into the different catagories on these award shows? Do you or anyone else on the board believe that some of "OUR" kind of music deserves an award or two, even though it's not considered "MAINSTREAM"???:icon_confused:

Certainly. If 1970s style disco was still as big a prt of the mainstream as it was back then, it would be in the running for any music awards just as rap is today. I think most music awards are about the prevailing genres.

The way I see it . . .if the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) can continue year after year to award a Grammy to Best Polka Recording . . .(I'm not making that up) . . . .then it's a crying shame that the one and only Grammy specifically assigned to Disco was the 1980 awarding of Best Disco Recording of 1979.

However . . . in NARAS' defense . . they did finally institute a Best Dance Recording Grammy 'bout 10 years ago . . and now also award a Grammy for Best Album in the dance music genre, so that's not too, too bad I guess.

Good point 70spop!!! But look how long it took the music industry to take Rap Music seriously before they even started nominating it for any type of award! But what really kills me is that DISCO was out before Rap ever hit the scene!!!

If you ask me, cuts like Relight My Fire by Dan Hartman, Love Sensation by Lolieta Holloway, Keep on Dancin by Gary's Gang, In the Bush by Musique, should have won or have been nominated for the "Best Disco Song" catagory. And ALL the Salsoul Albums should have won "Best Disco Album of the Year" awards. Then Alec R. Constandinos, and Georgio Moroder would have won the "Best Record Producers of the Year" awards!!!

    It's fun to imagine!!!

It's amazing how good things people love to destroy, and evil/dark things prosper; Disco was basically good, it had its rough edges (drugs, sex, etc. as do all trends), but was good music; then rap comes along and quickly prospers; rap was innocent at first just like disco but then it becomes dark with distateful and disrespectful lyrics, and goes on to last up until now. I firmly believe had disco continued, it would have garnered numerous grammys and other awards (artists, producers, music, fashion, the whole scene). I am really not fond of rap, I like some music and some artists, but my heart is still made out of disco.

Oh, and one more thing people tend to forget; rap was born from disco because the first rap tunes were sampled off of disco songs/recordings! So rap is actually a child of disco.

Actually, though no one will admit or recognize this fact, dance music, including techno, house, etc. IS DISCO; when the disco scene faded away and finally died, the name was no longer used and wht was left of disco as we knew it was torn apart and became different genres of dance (DISCO). I wish they would just go back to its roots and call it disco; I realize, as do we all, that we will never have the whole scene as it was, but for God's sake give us back our name; we all know dance, techno, etc. is disco evolved.

Disco, even had it not died, would have eventually evolved into a much different sound as we knew it, and that goes along with the fashion, trend, etc.; we all know and agree that nothing remains the same. I believe it would have evolved into all of the dance music generes we hear and enjoy today, but it still would have been called disco.

But I agree, they should at least have a best song, music, producer, etc. in the dance category which would include techno, industrial, goth, and contemporary dance (true modern disco). Maybe we should all sign a petition and submit it, along with a justification, to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (or whatever it's called that gives out the grammy awards) mandating that they have a "DANCE/DISCO" category which would include techno, modern dance, goth and industrial.

COMISKEY pushed its weight around over 30 years ago and snuffed out what we loved; let's start pushing our weight around and use this forum to gain back some of what we lost.......at least the name "DISCO" if nothing else.
