Say what! ... Ooh yes, I love a bit of Go-Go, although it can get a bit samey after awhile... say what!

Unfortunately there don’t seem to be any really good Go-Go CD compilation available, so I went a bit mad and made my own 2CD compilation awhile back, cleaned up and remastered my vinyl, did some cover artwork/sleeve notes etc., and then got some double CD jewel cases and made up some copies and gave them to a few of my vinyl junkie friends.

Oh man, I was a huge fan of Go-Go in the early 80's. I remember I was stationed aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. And we had just returned from an Indian Ocean cruise, and went into the Portsmouth, VA shipyards to get fixed up.

We would catch the number 2 bus to NOB, (Norfolk Oceanic Base) on Tuesday nights, to go to the enlisted man's club there called The Tradewinds. And it was there that I first heard Drop The Bomb by Trouble Funk. Funny thing about that record was the verse that said: Let's drop the bomb on the White Boys too, Drop The Bomb, Drop The Bomb!!! And the DJ just happened to be White, so he talked over the music and shouted: Let's drop the bomb on the Black Boys too, Drop The Bomb, Drop The Bomb!!!

Now granted, everybody on the dancefloor was Black, and everybody just stopped dancing, and looked at the DJ like a bunch of Pirranahs waiting for him to fall into the water!!! Man, I was dying!!! And the DJ never said another word for the rest of the night!!! What really surprised me then, was that one of my shipmates, who happened to be from D.C., hipped me to the fact that Go-Go had been out since the 70's, and there's badder jams than what was emerging to the public!!!

He turned me on to a cassette tape that he had, and I swear to God, Go-Go was definately kept underground, just like Rap Music was in the very beginning!!!

Go-gos cool. For me, it's the last of the old school funk before electro and drum machines took over most of the dance scene. It would take sampling in rap music to resurrect the natural live drum sound again around '87.

I still haven't quite figured out what makes it Go Go music? I mean, is it the fact there are percussion break downs? Or is it the way the kick drum plays on the drums? It's one of those genres of music that is distinct yet hard to define because there were so many other funk jams featuring heavy percussion breakdowns present before go go.

I'm with you on that DiscoFunk. Go-Go definately has it's own distinct sound. It's the Washington DC, sound! Just like Reggae, is the Jamacian sound, and is distinguished from Calypso, which comes from the other Islands in the Carribean.Check out the differences between Salsa, and Merengie. Although they're both Latin, the sounds are definately different. But great to dance to!!! Go-Go had that smooth steady groove to it, that really allows you to grind on a Girl's Booty, when she turns around and backs it up on you!!!'NUFF SAID

I love go go! It's a shame that it never hit the big time, because the chances of seeing a go go band perform are practically nill if you don't live in the DC area :-(

My favorite go go artists are Chcuk Brown and Trouble Funk- and I find that go go works best on live albums, the incessant groove that just goes on and on and on... love it!!!

Say what???:icon_razz: Yeah Trouble Funk's "Say What" was of my favorite funk tunes of the mid 80s, it was even available in Germany at that time. Great Percussion breaks and a little call and response, very groove. Go-Go was great, but you couldn't listen to it all day long. Wasn't there the song "Trouble Funk Express" which was sampled somwhere on a big disco hit??

It was not Trouble Funk being sampled:icon_idea::icon_smile: it was the other way round, Trouble Funk did their version of german electronic-pop song "Transeuropeexpress" by Kraftwerk from Düsseldorf
