    Shopping trip 03/01/2003

I did some serious vinyl hunting today for the first time in ages. I went back to a shop that is gloriously cheap, but hasn't had much of interest the last few times I'd been there... but I guess I should go more often, for there was plenty of items on offer, many of them at the ghetto price of $1. Here's what I picked up...

Reflection: A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Cnd LP -- Another obscure Québec disco production to add to my collection. Features a 15-minute disco version of the Procol Harum classic, plus two other faux-funk tracks.

Amant II: New York Nights -- US 12" -- Been looking for this one for several months now. I was quite suprised to find that it was composed by Pepe Luis Soto, of Celi Bee and Rice & Beans Orchestra.

    Fun Fun: Colour My Love/edit -- Ger 12" -- Disposeable 80s cheese.

Dolly Parton: "Dance With Dolly" 12" featuring Baby I'm Burnin' and I Wanna Fall In Love. Remixed by Al Garrison and Warren Schatz. Pressed on pink vinyl. You can't get much campier than this.

John Miles: Slowdown/Stranger In The City -- Cnd 12" -- very nice. I had only heard the Le Pamplemousse version of this song, which is quite, well, slowed down.

Fantasy: You're Too Late/instr -- US 12" -- very 80s sounding, somewhat catchy. Written by Tony Valor, and very different from anything else of his that I've heard.

Montréal Sound: Music (remix/original) -- Cnd 12" -- somewhat decent melody hampered by low-budget production and tedious arrangement

S-Express: Theme From S-Express -- UK 12" -- I never really cared for the US mixes which replaced a bunch of the samples (due to legal reasons, I assume)

Carrie: I Gotta Keep Dancing/What's The Question -- Cnd 12" -- Not bad...

St. Tropez: Morning Music/instr -- Cnd 12" -- One of the last Rinder & Lewis productions. Interestingly enough, it has real strings, which were on thin ground by 1983 when this came out.

The following titles I haven't listened to yet...

Vicki Sue Robinson: To Sir With Love/instr -- US 12"
Phyllis Nelson: Don't Stop The Train (2 mixes?) -- US 12"
The Three Degrees: The Runner/edit -- UK 12", white vinyl
Faith, Hope & Charity: Life Goes On/You're My Peace Of Mind -- Cnd 12"
Metropolis: I Love NY/short -- Cnd 12" -- Oops. I just checked and I already have this. Oh well.
Rare Earth: Warm Ride -- Cnd 12"
    Apollo: Astro Disco/instr -- US 12"
Linda Clifford: Bridge Over Troubled Water/Hold Me Close -- Cnd 12" (still sealed)
Patrick Cowley: Menergy/I Wanna Take You Home -- US 12", Fusion
Undisc comp 12" with Divine: Shoot Your Shot/Bobby O: She Has A Way/Erotic Drum Band: Plug Me To Death/Vivian Vee: Remember
Instant Funk: I've Got My Mind Made Up/Crying -- Cnd 12"
    American Gypsy: I'm OK, You're OK (3 mixes) -- US 12"
Boystown Gang: Cruisin' The Streets instr/Remember Me/Ain't No Mountain High Enough Suite (remix) -- US 12"
Phyllis Hyman: Riding The Tiger/ -- US 12"
The Impressions: You'll Never Find -- US 12"
Vicki Sue Robinson: Hot Summer Night/Hot Version -- Cnd 12"
    Voyage: Let's Get Started/I Surrender -- Fr 12"
Gloria Gaynor: Strive/dub -- Cnd 12" (there must have been at least 5 copies of this there...)
    Dream Express: Midnight Dream/instr -- Cnd 12"
Sylvia Love: Instant Love/Instant Dub -- UK 12"
Vicki Sue Robinson: Everlasting Love/instr -- Cnd 12"
Sailor: Down By The Docks/Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is -- Cnd 12"
Partners: Dance (Whoever You Are)/Partners -- US 12"
Stone Revival Band: Disco To The 50's/edit -- Cnd 12"
Vicki Sue Robinson: Half And Half -- US LP, sealed
The Force: Rock Your Baby/instr -- Cnd 12"
Auto: House Of The Rising Sun/We Got Love -- Cnd 12"
Gino Soccio: Turn It Around/instr -- Cnd 12"
Midnight Rhythm:Climb/Rushin' To Meet You -- US 12"
The Valverde Brothers: After Midnight/Layla -- Cnd 12"
Antonia Rodriguez: La Bamba (Wally Macdonald remix)/Sweet Love -- Cnd 12"
    Voggue: Love Buzz/edit -- Cnd 12"
The Jacksons: Walk Right Now (John Luongo remix) -- US 12"
Kano:(self-titled) -- US LP (terrible condition, unfortunately)
and 3 LPs by Foxy: Hot Numbers, Party Boys, and Live -- all sealed US copies!

Lots of good stuff there Graham. I have some of those like 3 degrees 'the Runner' on 12" white vinyl, & Fantasy's 'Youre Too Late' is one of my all-time favourites. You wont be disappointed with American Gypsy's 'Im OK Youre OK' or Gino's 'Turn It Around' either (this is one of his more under-rated tracks IMO) as I constantly play both of these lately.
What is the Amant II LP like? Is Ray Martinez not involved with this one?

Graham: I remember Fantasy's "You're too late" from the old days and some time ago I found it in CD version. I also remember I liked John Miles' "Stranger in the city", but I couldn't hum it now...
You seem to have found a nice stack both in quantity & quality. Congratulations.

Geez. You, too? Between you and Sammy I could lose it and have to run and find some Prozac :D . You found some real nice stuff, too. Fantasy is a favorite and was huge in NYC clubs. I don't think I have Amant II and I was surprised when you mentioned Pepe Luis Soto without Ray Martinez. Was this a "Paris International" production or something else? Just curious as I thought Amant 'belonged' to Ray.

Faith, Hope & Charity --- a double-sided hit. "You're My Peace of Mind" was huge but "Life... " was also hot.

Phyllis Hyman --- sweet jazz with Narada Michael Walden running the show. What couldn't she sing?

    Enjoy!
