Good news ! Something that I waited for long . . . :icon_razz:
A new movie FUNKYTOWN a 7 million dollars budget movie will be produced starting march 2009. This movie is about Tino and Tina living the incredible disco nightlife scene that Montreal went through the late 70's. The end of the movie will cover the decline of this culture and the result of drug / alcohol abuse. Some famous local people like Alain Montpetit (who did Voltaire - Dracula Disco & CKMF radio DJ) and Douglas "Coco" Leopold (CKMF radio DJ) will be featured. The famous "Limelight" disco club will be revived for the making of the movie. Patrick Huard will one of the main actors of this movie to be produced by Daniel Roby.
For those unaware, Alain Montpetit got better known in the US when NYPD concluded by DNA evidence that he killed a Canadian top model in a Manhattan Studio 20 years earlier (1980). Montpetit never got accused since he died of overdose in a motel room of Washington in the mid 80's.
Wishing them best great success.

Today in the news - they made a big deal out of the fact that Montreal played a major part in disco's history.
Considering that Patrick Huard is a major star here - the movie will receive a lot of press. Shooting starts in March and rumor has it that Huard's character is loosely based on Alain Montpetit.
Can't wait to see this film.

It'll be in french...but then again Patrick Huard's film "Bon Cop Bad Cop" was a bilingual affair and it did semi-well in the rest of Canada so maybe there'll be a english-dubbed version included on the DVD.
Shooting starts this summer.Rumor has it that Montreal's legendary discotheque 1234 will be featured in the film.More info as soon as we get any...I'm on the lookout.

Funkytown movie update....
for your convenience, I've found a translated text of an French interview prepared by fugues magazine with Steve Galluccio, the man behind the movie production Funkytown expected to be released mid 2010.
From mambo to disco
What was the hit movie this summer in Montreal ? De pere en flic, produced by Emile Gaudreault... who himself produced the two first movies from Steve Galluccio (Mambo Italiano and Surviving my mother). We wish the same success with the latest from Galluccio, Funkytown, the movie that was completed past August 09 in Montreal.
J'aime l'amour (I love to love) is proudly written on his 'Junk de luxe' t-shirt, Steve admits having preferences for disco music.
“I used to like watching Saturday Night Fever, one of my favourite songs is a hit from Tina Charles, I love to love that was purposely translated in French for the movie and will be known as “J'aime l'amour”.
Love ? There will be some in Funkytown. Sex ? Just as much. Drugs ? Obviously ! I wanted to reproduce accurately in this movie what actually happened back in the days from '76 to '78 from the peek years of disco music to its decline. Action occurs at the Starlight club, the movie version of the famous Limelight attended mostly by the gay community. Steve says: During those years, Montreal was the second largest city for disco music, after NYC. The Limelight was THE place to be in town, there were huge lineups outside on the sidewalk. If you didn't go there, there was something special missing. It was another era. During the late 70's, he recalls being there at a few occasions still a minor.
Several characters will be featured in this movie. Two of them are inspired by well known personalities back in the disco days: Douglas Coco Leopold (Paul Doucet) and TV host Alain Montpetit (Patrick Huard). Funkytown is more based on fiction than reality. We didn't want this movie to be an historical reconstitution, but everything was done to relive the disco era, the music, costumes but mostly the disco craze that ruled. Several personalities of the disco scene were met for counseling, the owner of the Limelight, Benoit Lafrance, and Boule Noire a disco singer that was interviewed 3 months before he passed away. Steve Galluccio says: Summer 2010 will be disco, spread the word !

Can't wait... After all - I lived it ! Doucet & Huard are gonna be fantastic - they are great actors.
Pascal Dufour (who used to be in The Respectables) has written some original material (done retro-style) to be used in the movie.I certainly hope they get the rights to use some actual Montreal disco classics as well.
We'll see. :icon_cool:

I wrote three original songs for the film, but the movie is rife with politics and favours where it comes to music so they will not appear.
FYI, this will not be completely disco soundtrack wise and is expected to have other music elements in it as well.
Thanks for the info... I'd like to say I'm shocked or surprised but I'm not.:icon_mad:

That's unfortunate, if we think of "54" (Mike Myers) it was pretty well garnished with a lot of original tracks that played in clubs back in the days.

Switching to "54", I met with the director when I worked at RCA, and got an original copy of the script. I would urge anyone who can find it, to read it. It was very different from the film.
As well, my concept for the soundtrack was somewhat different: to get any and all artists to cover the classics and put them in the movie. I mean, I would have loved (although many wouldn't have) hearing Christina Aguliera singing "Don't Leave Me This Way" ?
BTW, I never watched the movie.
I do hope that "Funkytown" is a huge success because it's truthfully Montreal is where disco was more than just a novelty in Canada.
Finally the movie FUNKYTOWN will start playing in canadian theaters next Friday

For those who want to buy this movie on DVD, it will be released on June 21st 2011

Johann - The movie was written by a friend of mine. It made history by being one of the first bilingual (with a ratio of 70% English vs 30% French) movie to ever come out of Quebec. I saw it in English and it goes back & forth from french to english but even the main French Canadian characters speak english and I was told the French version was dubbed which made it very odd.
I often joked that I should have been hired as a consultant on the movie because I saw a few things that made me squirm a little bit...(things like hosting a disco show in 1976 and having people dance to Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" - wouldn't have happened on my watch !!!!) Other than that - it's a great film...grittier than anticipated. It sure ain't a "light & fluffy night at the disco" kinda film.
