Hi Remix-according to my DiscoFile column,the 1st
12" pressing left off the Jim Burgess mix of "Chains"
so they had to reship with the correct mix.
Thom
*****Picked up a used copy of this because of what it says on the label :
PROMOTIONAL COPY
NOT FOR SALE
"RE-MIX NUMBER 2"
Its a Jim Burgess Mix
timing: 6:37
which I think is the typical mix that was available on 12" ........:icon_rolleyes::icon_question:
so what's the Number Two Re-mix version referring to??
Was there an earlier remix ... remix Number One ??
If so , I wonder how different ?? Jim Burgess also ??
????
my copy is red labeled / not this one: but love what it says here :
SPECTACULAR DISCO RE-MIX BY JIM BURGESS![]()
![]()
(the copy I have doesn't make any claims about REMIX # 2 being spectacular )

IIRC, one of the 12s had the LP version, plus the intro to "Fess Up To The Boogie" on by mistake. The second 12" has the proper remix.
There are three different mixes of "Chains" and two of "Cream". (Note: track times given here are from my own needle-drops, and might not match what is indicated on the label)
For "Chains", we have
- the album version (6:00)
- 12" version - Gregg Diamond mix, I think (6:47)
- and another version that I found on an old Unidisc compilation that clocks in at 8:25. I have no idea where they found this; it's not on any of the half dozen different US promo or UK 12s that I've seen. No mix credit is given, but I'm assuming it's a Jim Burgess remix.
For "Cream", there's the LP mix that runs 6:38, and a 12" version that runs about 6:44. The running times are close, but I can state for a fact that they are different mixes.
How odd then that as Bruce points out ...all the 12" versions of CHAINS give credit to Gregg Diamond as the remixer....:icon_exclaim::icon_question:
OK , but are they both spectacular ?? :icon_mrgreen:BrunoRepublic:

So then .....there's the original CREAM version as pressed on the LP and then the Jim Burgess remixed version that was released on 12" ... this one and only second version ... is aka: RE-MIX #2
Got it. Thank you both

Maybe they are? The version on the Unidisc compilation sounds to me like Burgess' work. It's similar in style to what he did with "Hot Butterfly" (longer, more reverb)
Yes they are. ;)
Interesting how, given all the remixes for this album, there were no remixes at all for the third and final Bionic Boogie LP. The promo 12" just has the LP versions.

Wow!-I would love to hear that-is it alot different Bruno?

Odd still that the Discofile column reported that the Jim Burgess remix was specifically being released on a repressed 12" for that purpose ... and then never was ....or was but miscredited to Gregg Diamond ... which would mean yet another flub-up in this pressing .
That is interesting to know .... guess from prior experience , Polydor was getting a little more 12" special mix weary by '79.... especially with Bionic Boogie ..... & decided the third Bionic Boogie Lp 's music was fine the way it was ....
however they should have done a remix of THAT cover !! :icon_eek:
jeesh .....and I thought the denigration of women on that Love And Kisses LP had justified cause for concern!!!! :icon_eek: :icon_eek:

When Bruno said that the 8 plus version was on a Unidisc comp,I kept thinking that I had it too,and I did
-on a CD called Dance Classics that Unidisc put out
in the 80's or 90's(I have three volumes-I think there were alot more though)After listening to this version a few minutes ago,I'm convinced that this is the official
Jim Burgess mix-lots of instrumental passages and breaks and much better to me than the LP mix.I wonder if the 8 minute mix got on the 12" but the time was listed wrong? Maybe there was two screwed
up pressings?!! Remix, what have you uncovered!
Thom
I just played both 12"'s of "Cream..." (remix #2 and the white label promo) simultaneously, they are the exact same time, and the only difference is in the EQ, the Guitar and Strings are brought to the front a bit more in the Remix #2, otherwise it's the same structure etc...
I never noticed that on the white label promo it does indeed play the opening of "Fess Up To The Boogie" after the cold end of "Cream...", thanks for pointing that out Bruno! If you weren't aware of that while DJing, that would have caused a bit of a train wreck mix!
Now I have to get my hands on the extended Unidisc version of "Chains", that's the song that really got my attention from that LP besides "Hot Butterfly"
How very kind of you to do that and report your findings TDK! :icon_biggrin:
Those are the types of things ( EQ , the loudness of the strings) that can mean the making or breaking in the quality of a mix and apparently they felt strong enough about it to go ahead and repress it to provide the song's mixed improvements to the DJs :icon_cool: .
AS for CHAINS : Still seems odd ...........that Jim Burgess would put in the time to create a remix and yet it wasn't passed on to the clubs at the time .....:icon_confused: :icon_confused: :icon_confused:.... what a waste .....
Especially since imo CHAINS is the cream of the two ...if you're going to invest a lot of time and effort promoting one of them that'd be my choice . ... although to me it seems like within CHAINS there are two different songs that are at odds and are trying to share the same vinyl space ... :icon_mrgreen:![]()
CHAINS says "CHANGE" as much as it does "CHAINS" and this could be another choice cut to be played at the Obama inaugural disco ball with its lines :
change the world ....
we gonna change the world
from this moment on !
Me too !!!Now I have to get my hands on the extended Unidisc version of "Chains", that's the song that really got my attention from that LP besides "Hot Butterfly"
And here it is in the meantime :icon_biggrin:
(my favorite part starts at 7:00 and on until it plays out ...)

Thanks for the youtube link, wow, it's totally different!, I love it! stripped down and lots of breathing room in the mix.
For a low BPM track (around 115-117, "Chains" was full of energy, it always seemed faster to me than it actually was.

and
I think most of us (?) think of this version of the heavily Luther laden
HOT BUTTERFLY as found on the LP of the same name where he begins singing right off the bat :
however Jim Burgess also did a lengthy remix of this song ( the fun really begins after 4:30 )
in which Luther doesn't begin singing until the :50 mark.
someone in a thread long ago said Andrea True's MORE MORE MORE was basically a Bionic Boogie song featuring her. I can really hear that on this song ...
love the similar piano .....
(& in this case , the harp !!)
