Vicki Lawrence, who's best remembered for her long running stint as Carol Burnett's sidekick on the Carol Burnett Show, and for her own series Mama's Family recorded a disco album in 1979. :icon_eek: Imagine my surprise when I found this out while visiting on a site dedicated to her with this passage:
Not one to be discouraged, Vicki tried her hand at disco in 1979 with her third LP "Newborn Woman." The album was issued on Windmill Records and produced by Al Capps who had previously produced Vicki as well as write "Mama's Gonna Make It All Better" in 1974. Unfortunately for fans of Vicki, the LP did not get much promotion since it was issued about a year after The Carol Burnett Show ended. I feel the effort was a valid one. The sessions produced a very good album that should have been pushed harder to the radio stations and dance clubs. I had no idea Vicki had even released an LP back in 1979, or I would have gone out of my way to find it! The good news is that the LP appears on ebay from time to time for those looking for it. I did see Vicki perform the song "Your Lies" from the Newborn Woman album on a TV show back in 1979. It may have been from "Paul Lynde Goes Mad" which Vicki taped in Utah at Osmond Studios with Marie Osmond and Charo as the other two guests on Paul's TV special.

It probably would've been a hit if the album was titled "Disco Thelma".
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
oooh Bob ...... as a lover of "celeb recordings" and of disco "novelties", so to speak, you've given me a new LP to try to purchase over the next year. Thanks so much for this tidbit of 1979 recording trivia, and I agree with Salsoul1975, she coulda made a "Mama"-sized splash (a la Merman) with "The Thelma Harper Disco Album".
. . .but the SCARIEST:icon_eek: part of your original post was the fansite reference to: "It may have been from "Paul Lynde Goes Mad" which Vicki taped in Utah at Osmond Studios with Marie Osmond and Charo as the other two guests on Paul's TV special."
The idea of being forced at gunpoint to watch such a variety special chills me to the bone.:icon_razz:
. . .found this on YouTube . . .but I don't think it's either the '76 Bay City Rollers disco tune nor the Bombers' 1979 tune of the same name.

I MUST have this album!!!
Thank you so much, Bobby-bear, for passing along this info.:icon_biggrin:
I'd always felt that Vicki was a much better-then-average singer. But when a performer, like Vicki, has a career that is so "VARIETY" oriented, it seems they receive less praise, in any one particular arena (acting, singing, dancing comedy, etc...), than they deserve.
An excellent example is CHARO. She's got great comedy skills. I'd seen her take-on a dramatic role in a TV movie, decades ago. And as I recall, she was quite convincing. (I forgot I was watching CHARO. Which speaks volumes for her acting abilities!) And, she's a fairly good dancer. But, hardly anyone is aware that she's one of the greatest Flamenco Guitarists in the world.

Yes she is a very talented guitarist indeed.I remember seeing her perform and being quite surprised...(I must also admit that I quite loved her hits on Salsoul records!!!). Dance a little bit closer is still quite charming...
Wasn't her recent dance hit an instrumental number in which she displayed her talent on guitar ?
