The title "Disco Inferno" came to signify a new meaning last weekend. As a favour to a mate I had promised to spin at a "nostalgia" party for those who had originally stomped on the club floors back in the late 70's. I arrived to this sad dump where not an inch had been redecorated since the Miami Vice days of pastels and "fun" postmodernist quirkiness. I tried to spot any familiar faces but all I saw was masses of flushed 40-somethings at the bar, well under way to getting totally trashed. Despite claims of being a "Fashionable dance club and cocktail lounge for adults" beer dominated and the not-so-beautifuls were already spilling it all over the banquettes. The air was heavy with perfume and aftershave. A promise is a promise so i climbed to the booth and dropped Penny McLean's LADY BUMP on the Technics. Instantly around 30 itching to dance stormed the floor. The women all looked like ripe lumps of Camembert cheese squeezed into too tight dresses. Some had apparently been to aerobics of bodypump classes and went into spasmodic boozefuelled improvisations. The men circled the bitches, salivating and thrusting their pelvises at them not in time to the music. Somehow I had envisioned the event to have just this "Greatest Disco Hits But Not By The Original Artists" feel and had arrived armed with the following:
Ritmo Young: CHARLY / POPCORN - when Bimbo Jet hit big producers all over southern Europe must have thought all you needed for a sure success was a cheap synth and any cabaret band. Ritmo Young is typical but with a feverish drive that elevates the familiar tunes into something else.
Africa: L'ETE INDIEN / LA BALANGA - more of the above
Gil Ventura: DISCO 3 lp - all tracks
Barry White: YOU'RE THE FIRST LAST EVERYTHING - for the Ally McBeal fans still recovering from their loss
Ann Christy: SECRET LOVE - the standard done later by Viola Wills, here with hi-hats and more bongos
Grand Frisson: LA MUSIQUE - fast singalong pop pounder
En Davy: YOU SET MY HEART ON FIRE - almost surreal Bollywood-sounding take on the Tina Charles fave
Sandy and Johnny: VOLARE - a burbling synth version
Love Company/R.B Company/Roy Boston and Toledo/Boston Soul Orchestra: DO IT ALL NIGHT/CRAZY DISCO MUSIC/DISCO DO BRAZIL - the label states all those names as the performer,as if they had joined forces to create something grand and unique. The track is good however, and goes well with The Pretty Maid Company.
Buffalo's band: SLAG SOLUTION - jumping odball hit from ´75
and so on. Never gonna do another "nostalgia" party, though.
