it's Janet's second album you want.. Dream Street. it's a great album not as good as her self titled debut from '82 or Control, but still a smoker!
the best productions on Dream Street are by Jesse Johnson especially Pretty Boy. the best cut on the album IMO. the Moroder ones are nice but not the best.

Thanks for the clarity on the early Janet info, Jackson9---"Love And My Best Friend" on her first album is a big favourite here..

The Moroder songs are not good at all (were the 80's good for Moroder musically anyway?). Very formulaic.

He was one of the most sought-after Producers, in the business, in the 80's.
Flashdance, Electric Dreams, Never Ending Story, Top Gun, the '84 Olympics, Irene Cara, Melissa Manchester, Madleen Kane, Metropolis, Japan, Nina Hagen, Freddie Mercury...
Yeah, Giorgio did alright in the 80's.

Yeah, Giorgio did alright in the 80's.
Commercially, ok, :icon_lol: but strictly musically? He did some generic FM pop-rock that is not as good as what he did with Donna Summer in the 70's. That kind of music hasn't aged well and the songs are far from being considered pop classics 25 years after.

Personally I imagined that large 80s demand for him was based on his ground-breaking 70s stuff; not many people seemed to seek him out after they'd heard his 80s stuff!:icon_confused:

I think he was a workhorse who said "yes" to many projects that he probably should have said "no" to in the Eighties. Stretched too thin by too much commitment, his stuff seemed less special as the Eighties progressed. That's why I always hoped he would reunite with Donna and hopefully get some of the magic "mojo" back...but, with the exception of the respectable "Carry On" in the early Nineties, it hasn't happened.

    Moroder Eighties highlights for me:

    "Call Me" - Blondie
"Fly Too High" - Janis Ian
"The Wanderer" LP - Donna Summer
"Cat People (Putting Out Fire With Gasoline)" - David Bowie
"Flashdance- What A Feeling" - Irene Cara
"Fire In My Heart/You Can/Playing For Time" - Madleen Kane
"Together In Electric Dreams" - GM w/ Philip Oakey
"Take My Breath Away" - Berlin
"American Gigolo" & "Cat People" scores
    "Love Theme from Flashdance"
    "The Never-Ending Story" - Limahl
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

I've always considered "Never Ending Story" and "Together in Electric Dreams" (in addition to his work with Sparks) to be some of his best work and I'm surprised they didn't find greater commercial success. "Story", especially, is incredibly melodic....I still play it a lot.

Re: what does Janet Jackson's Giorgio Moroder

I remember being very excited when they announced that Giorgio had produced some tracks on Janet's upcoming album.

In my head ; I tried to imagine her little wispy voice doing stuff like Call me or Stop me (If you think you've heard this one)...:icon_lol: OK maybe something like Amy Holland's She's on fire (from Scarface).

Then when the album was released I was a bit surprised but I didn't hate it.Just left me a little cold. Thank God for the Jesse Johnson tracks.

Now I quite enjoy the Cliff Richard duet but I can't help but wonder why it wasn't more dance-oriented.

Re: what does Janet Jackson's Giorgio Moroder

One record that seemed to garner a lot of attention for Giorgio was his work with Sigue Sigue Sputnik as well.

I will say this in his defense: Giorgio knew times were changing and soundtracks were really his baby as the 80's commenced. He has been quote as saying that he thought Irene Cara was the heir apparent to Donna, and it simply never happened.

His legacy is pretty much bulletproof. He took chances, and some hits and some misses followed. But I do believe that his success in the 70's was so vast, it is almost easy to pick and choose what was good and what wasn't. Moroder changed with the times. So many of my other heroes never connected with the decade that followed their disco glory.

Re: what does Janet Jackson's Giorgio Moroder

I remember picking up an issue of Genre magazine, I think it was in 1999, with Donna Summer on the cover. They had an interview with Giorgio where I think he was asked about career regrets. In reply to that, he mentioned how he didn't care much for the songs he did for Janet's "Dream Street" album and how looking back he wished he would have picked better material. I remember him saying something along the lines of how he didn't see much potential in her at the time and thought she was just singing because her father had pushed her into it and so on.. I suppose it was a fair assessment at the time.

Anyway, I actually enjoyed the title track, "Dream Street" which Giorgio and Pete Bellotte had produced. "Communication" and "If It Takes All Night" were pretty good also, but I have to admit, most of his & Pete's contributions were sub-par, compared to their usual standards (that Cliff Richard duet - ack!). The Jesse Johnson and Marlon Jackson tracks pretty much made that album, IMO.

Speaking of obscure Moroder productions, one I never hear about is "Time Is Tight" for Amii Stewart. I thought that one was pretty awesome!

The album called "Amii" is not one of her best albums, to say the least. One side of the original lp is produced by Moroder with the help of his usual team (at the time): Forsey, Barrow, Zito... They repeat their hollow formula here. No spark. "Time is tight" is even available in a 12" remix (kind of pointless, I must admit). Even if the B-side of the album, produced by the Bolland brothers, was much better, this lp is sadly a disappointment. Too bad because the two previous albums ("Amii Stewart" and "Try love") were really good.

Re: what does Janet Jackson's Giorgio Moroder

I'm quite fond of many of Jackson's SONGS but NEVER considered her to be a very distinctive vocalist (good writer, dancer and nice and easy on the eyes but not a great singer in my opinion). I attribute much of her success to the fact that she and her producers rode the coattails of the popular Prince sound, and you'll notice that her popularity faded right along with Prince's. She seems to be having a bit of trouble accepting that her time in the spotlight is pretty much up, which explains the high profile "relationship", Super Bowl fiasco and Saturday Night Live spoofs. If I were her I'd do what brother Michael did...move to another country for a few years and come back when the musical climate is different. But declining record sales and disappointing concert attendance are clear signs it's time to take a break....

You're so right Mr.R, I love most of her records but it has to be said that Ms. Jackson (if you're nasty!) has made so little talent go a very long way! (credit for that phrase to Messrs. Tennant & Lowe!)

I fell for her right out of the gate with this one:

Janet Jackson COME GIVE YOUR LOVE TO ME

Surprising to me.... it floundered as I recall

Sort of a sweetened up ROCK LOBSTER to my ears

and worked wonderfully with DEAD GIVEAWAY by Shalamar out at the same time ....

I recall it mixing well with Michael's "Beat It"...

But it was my first Janet purchase also.

I absolutely loved her debut album on A&M records.

She debuted the track THE MAGIC IS WORKING on DIFFERENT STROKES...then she managed to shoot a video clip for DREAM STREET (as part of an episode of FAME) with all the other co-stars.

But my fave was YOUNG LOVE.

The opening cut "Say You Do" with the dramatic intro/synth build-up is probably the best track she ever did. No surprise really, since it was pretty much a producer's project. She did some run of the mill vocals, that was all :icon_lol:

I've always considered "Young Love" a classic. I've often wondered if she's ever performed any of her pre-Control material in concert? As for Janet's voice, of the three Jackson sisters - Rebbie, LaToya and Janet - Janet has the best voice of the three, followed by Rebbie and then LaToya.

A long absence is seldom the right recipe for a revitalized career. Pop music moves quickly, and audiences move on even faster. Disappear for a couple of years, and people will have forgotten why you were ever famous in the first place. Michael is only in the news because at one point, he was the most successful pop artist in history, but more due to his various trials and allegations.

From what I've read, a comeback of any sort by Michael is pretty much out of the question now. Reports have surfaced that he's now a broke and broken man, weakened by arthritis and utterly devastated by the child-molestation trial. Supposedly he turned down a multi-million-dollar Vegas deal even though he's nearly bankrupt.

You must be hardcore....I love Janet but I'm not sure I can totally get into those first albums (maybe the only thing I have in common with Janet but to her credit I guess she is doing some of the pre-"Control' hits live on this tour).
It's not cutting edge by any means (nor was anything that Girgio did in the eighties other than "The Wanderer", the last heard shout with Donna and Pete) but it was fun I guess. Maybe better than "Janet Jackson" for my money...not sure. I heard he complained about her vocals...she should have complained about his songs! If you find it cheap, though, pick it up. Not rare but I think out of print in the US and the import isn't cheap.
