Today we finally managed to go the Cinema again, a little romantic night on the town and because it's my Birthday-weekend (something new, courtesy of Retroruss) I wanted to see "Mesrine" as it has got great reviews.
In fact, it's the French "Scarface", very captivating and based on the real life of the most famous French gangster ever, Jacques Mesrine who also had a brief "career" in the Us and Canada, mostly during the great 70's and was the public's hero!
Vincent Cassel who also starred in "Eastern Promises" as a Russian gangster plays the lead and Mathieu Amalric, the villain in "Quantum Of Solace" also joins the cast! Due to contractual obligations by Markydefad's office, Gérard Dépardieu is present too!
Tough movie, Tarantino-style but definitely 1 2 C!
Ze trailèrrrrre is in French because Zis is a French movie, but it will probably be released worldwide, so you have no excuse!
(Sorry, no trailer with English subtitles available right now)
Pumpin' this 1 up because of the DVD release.
People who love gangster movies, rent or buy! You will not regret as they are great movies (beware: there are 2!). Set in the 60's and 70's it will bring you back in that timezone and there's a superb Disco moment in part II: @ 1'07, Mesrine walks around the Paris red quarter (prostitute and club zone) when Patrick Juvet's "Où Sont Les Femmes" is playing. This is in a sort of way pure Travolta walking and is in fact a tribute to SNF!
Highly recommended!
These never played theatrically here but I did see part 2 when it came out in France. naturally, I did not understand all of the dialoque. Still, appreciated the flow of the film and got off on the gritty action, the impeccable production design and the furious acting. I'm going to get the dvds of course but will wait for a realese with subtitles.
