While trolling the Internet last month I came across a forum where Vince Aletti's "
Disco Files" was being discussed...and how a NYC artist's collective/space has catalogued his columns from 1974 to 1978...for us disco lovers to purchase and drool over:icon_razz::icon_razz::icon_razz:!!
I've received my binder copy last month..with sweaty palms and an accelerated heartbeat I opened the package... and WHAT A BLAST IT HAS BEEN!!! Just turn to ANY page and you'll find it all: reviews of the latest release (i.e Van Mccoy's "The Hustle" on the April 12, 1975 column) plus cuts i've never heard of (Cleveland Eaton's "Chitown Theme" (??))...you get 4 Top-10 charts for that week from various discos around the country (i.e.Continental Baths in NYC for March 13, 1976)...a few Disco File Top 20 charts are scattered in, too!!
The columns printed are from November 30, 1974 all the way through to December 30, 1978...For some reason a few weeks are missing (don't know if Vince did not have access to these or they just weren't printed for that particular week...My particular copy seems to have 30 weeks "lost"(out of 220 or so weeks)...
Vince Aletti is now a photography critic for "The New Yorker" magazine (I did not know that!) and had an exhibition back in March 2008 in NYC. The gallery where this was happening also reprinted his "Disco Files"...
You can find this true "manna from heaven" by searching "White Columns Publications" and scanning for "Vince Aletti- Disco Files"
Enjoy!!!!
