Friday happy hour w/Sam "ALL JAM" #20- Valentine's

I normally post this topic on 'What we are listening to this week', however, since this playlist is all slow jams, I've decided this thread would be better suited. Great night this past Friday @ Larry Holmes Ringside. Alot of couples there for an evening out eating, drinking and enjoying each other's company. Therefore, the theme for the evening was obviously love ballads. With that in mind, here are some of the classics that I spun during this Valentine's day happy hour:

    Natural High - Bloodstone
    It's you that I need - Enchantment
    The Bells - The Originals
    Together - The Intruders
I'm stone in love with you - The Stylistics
Give your baby a standing ovation - The Dells
    Hey love - The Delfonics
I do love you - GQ
Round and round and round - Gary's Gang
Here I am - The Sugarhill Gang
For the lover in you - Shalamar
You are my starship - Norman Connors
Distant lover (Live) - Marvin Gaye
Got to be there - Michael Jackson
    Love's calling - Zingara

among many other great love songs. It was a nice change of pace that the lovers in attendance seemed to enjoy and at times danced too. As always, I hope these bring some positive memories for y'all, I know they did for me. I'd love to hear your comments. Great night altogether for lovers and others. :)

A nice set there, Sammy - designed to warm up the coldest of hearts - whatever the weather!!

Nice to see you included that Norman Connors track "You Are My Starship" that we have been discussing recently. That is the first track on the "Best Of Norman Connors" CD I bought recently, and when my friend at work (my man Jim) heard it for the first time he was really knocked out by it. I also played it on the way into work this morning. Truly a great ballad!!

I have The Dells LP but I certainly haven't played that track for a long long time! I'll get it out for the weekend!

I knew you would play that GQ track, as i know you kinda like it!!

I also like your tracks by Bloodstone, Michael jackson and Zingara. I have that on a 7-inch somewhere ...

But I never knew that the Sugarhill Gang recorded a slow jam!!
If it moves - funk it!!

Jazzman, thanks for the comments. I knew a true romantic like yourself could appreciate a playlist like this one. :) As for the Sugarhill slow jam 'Here I am', believe it or not, it is a great song. You would never guess it is them. From their first LP from '79-'80 it is definitely something you should look into. By the way, one I forgot to mention that I played on Friday was another fave of yours I recently rediscovered:

You were meant for me - Donny Hathaway

I think the only way to describe this song the more I hear it now is absolutely perfect. Great song, great voice. What else is there to say.

Nice call on that Donny Hathaway track, Sammy! Glad you have found that one again! I especially love those soaring vocals - reaching those wonderful highs! A superb vocalist!

Aaah - they were happy days!!

Only the Jazzman and The Senhores de Groove can truly appreciate this one of a kind voice. Soaring vocals is the perfect description. Right on Jazz! :D

    Hey Sam,

as a hardcore (!) fan of ballads, I really dig your selection. Lot of beautiful songs - all those marvellous harmony groups from the early seventies. When I hear music like that, I always think that making love ballads is a lost art - a few people know how to do a beautiful ballad these days.

I don't know the track by SUGARHILL GANG but I'm very curious. It's on the same LP that contains RAPPERS DELIGHT?

    Peace SAM

Z-man, thanks for your comments. I know you appreciate the ballads as much as I do. It was very well put by you that this is a lost art. For some reason ballads today do not seem to have the same appeal. However, as long as we have LP's and CD's of Enchantment, The Dells, The Stylistics, The Delfonics, The Intruders etc., we'll be okay. :D

P.S. - 'Here I am' is on the LP entitled 'The Sugarhill Gang' that does feature Rapper's Delight.
