Oh jeezuz. Even Barry Manilow is rick-rolling us now. When will this madness end?
According to Billboard magazine . . . .Barry Manilow's going to do a cover of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". Ought to be interesting to say the least
Here's the article:
October 16, 2008
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Barry Manilow's tour through the annals of pop music continues Nov. 25 with "The Greatest Songs of the Eighties," his fourth decade-themed collection for Arista.
Working again with longtime collaborator Clive Davis, Manilow tackles Reagan-era staples such as Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You," Wham!'s "Careless Whisper," Phil Collins' "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" and Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' "Islands In The Stream," with Parton's part handled by Reba McEntire.
The three prior "Greatest Songs" releases have sold more than 2 million copies combined in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Manilow's "Ultimate Manilow" engagement resumes Oct. 22 at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Here is the tentative track list for "Greatest Songs of the Eighties":
"Islands in the Stream" with Reba McEntire
"Open Arms"
"Never Gonna Give You Up"
"Have I Told You Lately"
"I Just Called to Say I Love You"
"Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)"
"Careless Whisper"
"Right Here Waiting"
"Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do)"
"Hard to Say I'm Sorry"
"Time After Time"
"I've Had the Time of My Life"
Oh jeezuz. Even Barry Manilow is rick-rolling us now. When will this madness end?
I dunno... If you take away the element of burned-out, media-overplay, "Never Gonna Give You Up" is a really good song.
I think Manilow's voice is suited for it. The catch is going to be in how it ends-up being arranged.
And you KNOW there's going to be remixes!!!
It could go either way...

I agree; it has just the right vibe for Manilow. And yes, it is a great song (overplayed but great).
It could be his next "copa"! (running)![]()
I,for one was the first to say "What - No disco song on the 70's CD ???"
So it's only fair to have at least one danceable hit on the next one.
I imagine the remixes will somehow sound like Barbra's Night of my life as redone by Junior and L.E.X.That voice over a circuit track was very special.
It could go either way - but at least it'll be more exciting than just another REO Speedwagon cover !!

Start rant:
I hate these f***ing covers albums! Somebody please make them stop! Clive Davis is a shell of his former "brilliant" self.
Barry needs to write some original stuff, get into the studio with Ron Dante, banish all synthesizers and digital reverbs and make a new classic album.
End rant.
(That said, I did enjoy most of Summer of '78)
RobbaDobba . . . thankfully, in the direction Barry's heading, there's only 2 more decades LP's left in the current sequence.
I guess we'll be hearing his take on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" next year :icon_eek:
Well, it would be nice to see him do an OBSCURE cover....maybe we should start right now doing "Barry Does Disco".....
I would like to nominate "The Night" by Valerie Dore. I think he'd do a great job on it..
Let's face it: Clive has NOTHING on us. Let's do his work for him.
NEXT !

Fun idea, Vince :icon_idea:
let's see . . . next track on your "Barry Does Disco" LP . . .why not give him the male lead vocals on "Romeo & Juliet" :icon_exclaim: --- I can just hear him now dramatically emoting "What can you expect -- she's a Capulet. Turn your eyes away -- speak no more of this young woman .........."
And to keep him "relevant" in today's marketplace, hand the female lead vocals to an American Idol winner/finalist like Jordin Sparks.
It could work . . . we've certainly seen worse collaborations :icon_razz:
I could well imagine Barry doing :
Patrick Juvet's Lady Night , Edwin Starr's H.A.P.P.Y. Radio
or even try to outdo his own Copacabana by covering the Gibson Brothers' Cuba.
:icon_biggrin:

I think it's kind of sad when artists whose days are behind them have to resort to recording "cover" albums as per genres, decades, etc. Rod Stewart, anyone?
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
Salsoul1975, my friend, we need you to give Barry some of the Baker Harris and Young love here ! Give us a track, not a comment. We need experts like you to give Barry something to break out his dancing shoes..
As for your well spoken comment, the sad part is that we live in an ageist reality and society on radio in North America and in the UK, his Astley cover will probably go to # 1 all over Europe. He's worked hard, let him have his cover fun.
And where it comes to Rod, after his legendary career, at least he finally won a damn Grammy doing those records. Cheer up. It's Friday !!!
I think it's much sadder that these albums sell in big numbers. But that's the way it is. Older audiences don't want to hear new material, and younger audiences don't want to hear older performers. I know plenty of people who don't want to hear anything done after 1990 except covers/remixes of 80s tunes -- not even new material by the acts they used to love. Seems that if they don't already know the lyrics, they aren't interested.
I know that might seem odd coming from someone with a passion for 70s disco, but I don't want to listen to the SNF soundtrack for the rest of my life either. I'm always seeking out what I haven't heard before, what's obscure, what's new-to-me. The day that I reach the point where I can't appreciate anything I don't already know is the day I give up on music.
BTW, we really must give Donna Summer credit for refusing to go down the easy path and do a covers album.
Beautifully put, Graham. Now give us a track for Barry's disco album !
Actually, there was a positively HORRIBLE special made once about disco and they had a bunch of people that didn't belong in it like Sinitta etc on it.
Judy Weinstein, the For The Record, record pool director gave us a cement quote:
She said that to the club people and DJ's of note during that time, almost all of the music, if not all of it, was totally played out when SNF was released. Tracks on that album resulted from mass hysteria, forced relentless requests and radio play. Did it sell ? Absolutely. Over saturation ? Completely !
I personally can't listen to it because I've heard it too much !!
Vince
Manilow is always pretty careful to only cover songs that are within his range as a singer. I think the covers of his I've heard so far are "so so" but can't imagine him choosing anything REALLY challenging like some old James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Al Green...SINGER'S singers. And wasn't Ron Dante, his collaborator, behind the Archies?
...ya gotta beat the street......
Loved them when they were on their way up [producing early Divine singles/Agents Aren't Aeroplanes/Princess]. Loved them when they exploded all over the world [Hello Kylie/Jason/Sonia and co.].Loved when they teamed up with Donna...[some might call this my dream come true !!!]
Loved when they injected some techno touches, then reinvented themselves as modern day Bjorn & Benny with Steps, released solo stuff by Johnna, produced truly fine singles for Nancy Davis...etc.
I am still excited when I find anything PWL related in used record stores...
Anyone else buying stuff by Johnnie O,Undercover,Kakko and Erik ???
That sound makes me happy...Light,fluffy,danceable and unabashedly pop.
And there ain't nothing wrong with that !!
KRIS
Their sound makes me happy too! For me, their best moments are 'The Heaven I Need' by Three Degrees, 'Respectable' by Mel & Kim, 'I Wanna Be a Toy' by Dead Or Alive & 'Happening All Over Again' by Lonnie Gordon.Oh & 'After The Love Has Gone' by Princess & 'Get Ready' by Carol Hitchcock are favourites of mine too. Oh & don't let's forget 'Whatever Makes Our Love Grow' by Edwin Starr & 'In Love With Love' by Debbie Harry too. The list of great SAW tracks is endless.
...ya gotta beat the street......
When Rick appeared I noticed how he danced and thought hmmm, he has a nice style. And yes indeed, before long lots of guys were doing those Astley moves.
Where is he now?

I have the red-vinyl pro 12" of "Fire Island".:icon_biggrin: The b-side has the hidden GEM:icon_biggrin:, "They're Playin' Our Song", from the Broadway musical. Absolutely beautiful!
Ron Dante was, also Paul Jabara's 1st producer. For the singles, "DANCE!", "Hungry For Love" and 2 other tracks off of Paul Jabara's 1st LP.

Got 'em all babe!
For awhile there, I got as obsessed with PWL, as I'd been with Casablanca. And filed them by catalogue number, to see where I was missing anything!
Then again...
For a couple years, there, I was the PWL King...
oh, ok...![]()
PWL Queen, here in the states!
