OK – I am sure you were all extremely worried about where I was. Well, I was just here… but decided to take a little ‘breather’. A long Xmas holiday followed by a lot of work prevented me from dropping in to my favorite community.

But I am still here, and am still available to help and/or to annoy.

I thought I would celebrate my return to the board today with an overview of a shopping trip to Tower Shibuya here in Tokyo. Lots of new old goodies in the reissue department, so here goes:

    Old stuff (re-issued):

Future Flight – same. Written and produced by Lamont Dozier in 1981. Nice disco-funk album in the Pleasure style. Remastered by EMI Toshiba Japan in 2001.

Leroy Burgess – Anthology Volume 1, The Voice. He had ‘threatened’ to put it out for some time on his website, but finally managed to get all the rights cleared. Excellent stuff from The Fantastic Aleems, Logg and Aleem. “Volume 2: The writer and producer” is promised for spring 2002 and should contain High Frequency, Caprice, Convertion, Fonda Rae, Dino Terrell, Intrique and Black Ivory. Leroy is a really nice guy who responds personally to emails. Respect!

Melba Moore – This is it, the best of. I always wanted some clean versions of her Kashif and Paul Lawrence Joness III stuff. Done! This Razor Tie/Capitol compilation has no edited versions – a miracle!

Marlena Shaw – Take a bite. I bought it because it contains the Suite 17 medley which I have on a one-sided 12 inch. Haven’t listened to the rest of the album. She is not wearing a bra on the sleeve… and she should have really…

Glenn Jones – Everybody loves a winner/Finesse (two classic albums on one CD). I bought it for “I am somebody” which I have always loved. Now have to listen to the rest…

The Jones Girls – Keep it comin’/Get as much love as you can (two classic albums on one CD). You can never beat a clean copy of “Nights over Egypt”. The rest is just bonus.

Plush – Plush. This re-issue makes me both very happy and pisses me off. I pursued this album on vinyl last year via all means known to mankind. And finally found a copy. And now I find that BMG Japan reissued the album… Oh well. I bought it anyway because “Free and easy” is still awesome after all these years, and “Gonna get ya” is still one of my all time turn-up-the-volume tracks ever. The re-issue could have done with the 12 inch versions as bonus, but lacks them. Luckily I have them on vinyl.

Rodney Franklin – The Best of. A steal at $ 9.00.

Arthur Baker – Breakin’ (double CD). Arthur Baker is one of my favorite remixers. And actually I like releases under his own name too. Especially his album “Give into the rhythm” from 1991. I was very lucky to score the “Let there be love” track on vinyl 12 inch with the David Morales remixes on my holiday. But I digress. This is a double compilation CD. CD1 is called New Skool and contains old tracks redone. CD2 is called Old Skool and contains gems such as Cuba Gooding, Will Downing, New Order, Fleetwood Mac, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force and of course Rockers Revenge. All remastered and unedited or mixed. Yes!

Dimitri From Paris – After The Playboy Mansion. Damn! I had promised myself not too buy it. But I did anyway. Because say what you want, but Monsieur Dimitri still has some gems on this album. I only listened to CD1, but I love Beautiful People’s “I got the rhythm”. I know, I know, he is not too original and songs are edited and cut and paste… but still…

Masters At Work presents West End Records 25th anniversary mastermix. OK… I have all or most of these tracks. But I LOVE Kenny Dope and Little Louie. And they treat the tracks with respect… so… By the way, I heard a pre-release version of their own new album which comes out tomorrow here in Japan. If you liked Nu-Yorican Soul you will love their new one!

Sounds Like 54 – compilation double CD. Contains the not so usual tracks such as We’re on the right track by Ultra High Frequency, the instrumental version of Moment Of Truth’s “Helplessly”, and 25 other tracks. Check this UK album out – it has some interesting stuff for your ears.

    New stuff:

Frankie Knuckles – Motivation. Excellent gospel-tinted garage/house compilation. Clearly inspired by the aftermath of 911, Frankie decided to create a compilation that showcases dance and house-music’s gospel roots. Highly recommended album, featuring Donna Allen, Urban Blues Project featuring Bobby Pruitt and Kenny Bobien and 9 others.

D’Influence presents D-Vas. The English r&b/soul collective strike again. When you see their name, it is almost a guarantee for excellent stuff. The album is more r&b than previous D’Influence releases, but the boys and girls still are true to their disco influence by re-doing “Taste of bitter love”, one of my all time favorite tracks by Gladys Knight, written by Ashford & Simpson. Other tracks are also very nice, but we could have done without the Ruff ‘n Tumble remixes. Yuk!

Danny Krivit presents Music Is My Sanctuary double CD. Nice house compilation. The man has a fine nose for soulful garage house in the style of Frankie Knuckles. Nuff said.

Eitetsu Takayama & Yoshi Horino present House Things Volume 1. Same as Danny Krivit and Frankie Knuckles. I really hate the ‘house’ label that is attached to what I consider to be the disco of the new millennium. This is disco and not house, but what do we call it. New Disco? Anyway, this album contains Kenny Bobien, Kahuun, H&H and other excellent New Disco (hahahaha). Plus a cute mini-CD which I haven’t listened to yet, but I presume it is a megamix of sorts.

Kenny Bobien – Blessed. I decided to buy the man’s CD (filed under gospel…). I have enjoyed many releases featured on compilation CD’s so I will give his album a try and let you know…

Backstreet Boys – Drowning CD single. WHAT? ARE YOU MAD? Backstreet Boys? ME? Well, you see, it contains a Morales remix of “I want it that way” and I am trying to keep my Def Mix collection complete (a nearly impossible task… I have currently around 200 tracks that were done by the Def Mix collective from NYC!).

Sadie – Sadie. I saw the names of Nick Nice and Stonebridge, the Def Mix look-alikes from Sweden and it was on sale so I thought what the hell… I should have been wiser… On the positive side though, this girl is not wearing a bra and with her I highly encourage it (as opposed to Marlena Shaw – see above).

So there you have it. My little pile of CD’s for this week at the office. I promise I will be here more frequently. And for those who were wandering what has happened to the Goody Music website… go ask Yahoo GeoCities. I officially hate them. I will re-create my little Jacques Fred Petrus shrine elsewhere… time and technical understanding permitting.

Maarten, good to see you! A query or two:

    1) Does the Arthur Baker compilation contain the remix of Fleetwood Mac's "Big Love"?

    2) Do you really like "Dmeathead from Paris"? That mess he made of The Originals "Down To Love Town" probably constitutes some sort of felony......

Yes to Arthur Baker. Can tell you the time it clocks tomorrow. I am at home now and the CD is still in the office.

Yes also to Down To Lovetown. But without that version... I would have never found out about that song in the first place. So I guess there is a silver lining to every cloud...

It went the same way for me with the Walter Gibbons version of Law & Order. Found it on the Francois K CD, and I am still hunting for that version today.

By the way, I like your signature! And as a Dutch culture vulture, did you know there was a Dutch movie called Blue Movie in the late 60's, early 70's? It was artsy fartsy but it was really about nekkid women of course...

Boodikka - the Fleetwood Mac track clocks at 6:20. The CD was released by Perfecto from the UK. It should be around on Amazon UK I reckon.

Hi all - I would like to STRONGLY recommend to buy the double CD Sounds Like 54 on UK's SMAK CLASSICS. It has truly awesome looooong versions of many classics and some (for me) new material.

All songs are in the Salsoul/Philly tradition with grand orchestration and real 'everything'.

You can find the track listing on Amazon.co.uk by typing in the album name as above in the search music engine. Truly excellent!

Boodikka, I am interested in buying "Dimitri At The Playboy Mansion" cd because I liked 10 out of the 14 songs that I've heard from media player. One of them is "Down To Love Town" but your post is giving me second thoughts. So I would appreciate it if you can give me the 411 about this cd before I spend $16.99 for nothing. Is there any other reason why you call him Dmeathead?

I forgot to add what I've been listening to lately:

1.Get Down Tonight/Keep It Comin' Love/I Like To Do It - K.C & The Sunshine Band

    2.Whistle Bump - Deodato

    3.Dancer/Remember - Gino Soccio

    4.Spring Rain - Silvetti

    5.Sunshine/Livin' For The Weekend - O'Jays

    6.Supernature - Cerrone

7.La Vie En Rose/I Need A Man - Grace Jones

8.Love Hangover/The Boss/Touch Me In The Morning - Diana Ross

    9.Love Trilogy/I feel Love/Four Seasons - Donna Summer

    10.You Can't Hide From Yourself/TKO/The More I Get,The More I Want - Teddy Pendergrass

I didn't know that Silvetti made a lp name "Sun After The Rain". How would any of you rate it? Is it as pretty as "Spring Rain"?

Hustle, The Original's "Down To Love Town" is a brilliant song, and DMeathead's version sounds like he edited it with a machete. It's far worse than that 7" hatchet job on the BILLBOARD 1976 DISCO HITS CD.

The second Bebu Silvetti album is great, and I have always highly recommended "Sun After The Rain", I find it superior to "Spring Rain".

    Boodikka

Now my next question is where can I find "Sun After The Rain"? It took me about three years before I found "Spring Rain" on The SalSoul Classics compilation cd. One thing that I know for sure is that Record Explosion don't have it.

    Boody My Lady,

Have you heard the Salsoul Strings version of "Sun After The Rain" on the Salsoul label? It's much faster, funkier and has more bottom end than Silvetti's, but it's not better. Interesting alternate version. Maybe I'll throw it on.

By the way Boody, slipped in some Bacharach (Casino Royale) .

Bernie, you are the Emperor indeed. That Salsoul Strings "Sun After The Rain" isn't bad.....some like it, some don't. It's like those who liked the version of "I Love Music" on MONTANA as opposed to the original version by the O'Jays.....chacun son gout.

As for putting Casino Royale on the next Radio Show.....the Goddess says "Yes!" Long Live Lounge!
