    Re: Wasted money

Like me there's gotta be other people who from time to time buy music, which turns out to be a complete waste of money.

One 12 inch I definately found a complete waste of money (and effort) was Dr! Dr! by Shakatak - what a stupid track compared to their older work. I ended up giving it away to somebody, because I thought keeping it was just a waste of space  Good thing that I only spent a few dollars on it. So it turned out that despite the fact that the name Shakatak was on the sleeve it wasn't a guarantee for a good song.

Anybody else out there who from time to time has spent their money on music which turned out to be (rather)disappointing?

I'm afraid there's way too many of those records. Some of them are even made by artists who usually do good job.

That goes for Melba Moore's "Read My Lipps" album (capitol, 1985) - what a sad piece of vinyl! :(

Also Louis Johnson's - "Evolution" (1985) album made my skin crawl. There was no sign of old Bros. Johnson left.

Modern Talking - The First Album (1985) - 8 tracks on it, but only one song. German music when it's worst...wonder why I bothered. :x

Paul Laurence - Underexposed (1989) - definitely no "she's not a sleaze" on this one...arrrgh!!

More will come to mind....I know they will..... :(

K-Bee: below are a few others that fall into this catagory:

    1. Street Angels - One Bite: A disappointing song compared to Dressing up; :-?
    2. Georgio - Car Freak: This song sucks compared to Lovers Lane; :(
    3. Mai Tai - Fight fire with fire: Utterly booooring compared to their older stuff (e.g. History; Body & Soul);
    4. George Duke - Broken Glass: I can't believe this and Thief in the night are from the same artist... :o

I' sorry to admit it but i really do love Broken Glass by George Duke allthough it's very different from what else he's done (sounds more like some H. Hancock electro stuff).
Love the short but wierd acoustic piano solo in the middle.

I'm a big George Duke fan and I own most of what he has ever recorded. I'm not the one to argue, but I really do feel that "Thief in The night" is one of the worst albums he ever recorded . At the time he was trying to get out of his contract with Elektra. They wanted him to make pop hits and he wasn't really into that any more.
sadly, he didn't leave Elektra until the early 90's. First album for Warner Bros was 1992's "Snapshot".

Broken Glass is the one with the vocoder in the beginning. It was released in 1986 (I think) on the Elektra label. The song mainly does not appeal to me, because it sounds 'messy'; there seems to be no 'line' in it, if you know what I mean.

It's nothing like buying an album, cd or tape anxious to play it and it turns out to be dissapointing :x ! I've had a few:

Gino Soccio - an album from his earlier days (maybe early/mid 70's) with unrecognizable songs. I was able to exchange it and I've found my favorite of his "REMEMBER".

Shalamar - a so-called, misleading 12"inch mixes of all their hits and the **** sounds nothing like the original. Unfortunately, I was unable to return or exchange it  .

    Nitro,

I've been looking for a song called "NIGHTBIRDS" by a group name SHAKATAK. The first time I'd heard NB and was back in the late 70's-early 80's. Other than the jazz stations, Frankie Crocker used to play Shakatak's songs all the time. I remember the song mostly consisted of piano playing and girls singing the chorus. The chorus went something like this:

    Flying through the night
    flowing through the wind
    Through the city lights nightbirds
    With a lovely breeze

the words maybe not be exact but it goes something like that. Your help would be appreciated :D !

Personally I loved the 12" of George Duke's 'Thief In The Night' and played it one hell of a lot.
The one thing about what one considers crap today, is that someone, somewhere will think it's brilliant in maybe 20 years time. Many of my least revered records are worth serious money today, if I was ever tempted.
This is the very reason why I generally don't believe obscure records can ever be brilliant (in mass appeal terms). There are exceptions, of course.
The biggest crap I ever bought (apart from one third of my collection) was.......probably a certain early Canadian rap record More Ounce by Bobby (Demo). It's maybe worth a fortune now........naaaaaaaaaaa!

Just checked at GEMM and surprise, surprise it's going for $33.00. Crap sells eh?

    Hustlebaby:
Nightbirds was a major hit for british band Shakatak in 1982.
You can find it on the "Nightbirds" album (Polydor 2383 633, 1982)

There's a live version of the song on "Shakatak Live" (Polydor 823 899, 1985)

QUINNY: Don't get me wrong - Like you, I just love the 'Thief in the Night' 12 inch - I have even two copies of it: one is a promo; the other is an official release. As a matter of fact I still even give it a spin on my turntable from time to time.

Thing is that while I think 'Thief in the night' is a very 8) track, 'Broken glass' is very UNcool... meaning that it does not appeal to me at ALL!
