Horror buffs take note! What we now have in front of us now is Pascal Laugiers "The Martyrs", reportedly the most gruelling endurance test of a movie since Ruggero Deodato's 1980 "Cannibal Holocaust". Last month, Martyrs was first branded with a rare 18 certificate in France, poison to the major distributors. The film eventually emerged into cinemas uncut with a more accessible 16 cert plus a warning of it's contents. The reviews in genre press were ecstatic.
I made sure I got a seat for the first Finnish preview screening last Saturday. All I can say is if it's not getting a realese in your region jump into a car train or plane to see it. Spare no expense. Martyrs is a milestone, every horror enthusiast should see it on a big screen. In my country, it'll be going into general realese at Christmas - what a choice for a holiday movie.
Basic premise in a nutshell, no spoilers: 15 years after her escape from a cell where she was non-sexually abused for a year by a cult, a young woman gets a gun, teams up with another victim and goes in search of members of the sect. Things go horribly wrong of course. What follows is all original, nothing to do with "Hostel" or tongue-in-cheek stuff like that, it's far more serious in tone and totally merciless. It's a re-assuring thought that in this age of bland superhero movies something as transgressive as The Martyrs can still be seen in real cinemas. What the general audiences will make of it I cannot imagine. Don't wait for the dvd, subject yourself to a shocking human experiment and see the film with a crowd.
