    Disco artist acapellas?

I am wondering how many acapellas are out there for disco songs. A particular acapella I've been wanting is "Rapture" by Blondie. The rap part in particular. Any leads?

Discodoc, when you say "acapella", do you mean a disco tune (or portion of one) that has no music whatsoever -- just the sung or spoken lyrics ???

I'm guessing that must be a rare breed in disco (how else we gonna dance without the music :icon_lol:)

But seriously, it will be interesting to see what our fellow members recall. Hell, in pop music of the '70s, I can only think of 2 non-disco acapellas that were hits: Judy Collins' "Amazing Grace" and Prelude's "After the Goldrush".

    Unique topic - that's for sure :icon_exclaim:

"Love Sensation" by Loleatta Holloway is the first one that comes to my mind, the acapella version came out on the remixed Shep Pettibone 12" and has been sampled TO DEATH by everyone and their mother! It's the reason we have the wrongly titled "RIDE ON TIME" by Black Box. The producers sampled "Love Sensation" but thought she was singing "... ride on time" instead of "... RIGHT on time".

I get it now (I'm a blond, ya'll, so forgive me:icon_mrgreen:). Acapella remixes/versions of existing disco tunes. good remixing idea.

In 2001 Salsoul issued a series of ten 12"s called «DJ tools» and they feature several versions of the song: instrumental, background vocals, strings & horns, bass & drums and often an a cappella version. «Hit and run» and «Ten percent» are two of those 12"s.
Nevertheless the a cappella versions weren't originally released in the 70's and I think the only a cappella versions of disco songs you can find were released like this series way after or are bootlegs (Motown songs' a cappellas can be found sometimes).
The idea of including an a cappella mix is very 80's («Love sensation» in its a cappella form is from 1983) and it needs a good singer like Whitney Houston or Luther Vandross. Did Donna Summer ever release a real a cappella ? The only a cappellas released by Diana Ross for example are «Take me higher» (1995) and «I will survive» (1997). Late in her career.
Some mixes are almost a cappella like a 1990 mix of «I will survive» by Shep Pettibone (called «a cappella and strings mix»).

At the same time, Shep did the remixes of "Dr. Love" and "Let No Man Put Asunder", for Salsoul. Both with the accapellas on the b-sides.

Although the remixes, themselves, weren't terribly well-received (purists didn't take too well to messing with certain classics)...the accapellas became MAJOR cult collectors' items.

OK, I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but just out of curiosity, does anyone recall the very VERY first disco acapella that ever surfaced into existence? I only want to know how this terrific idea was born, since many DJ's over the past 25 or so years have used them to reconstruct into their own hit versions (like Todd Terry did with Class Action's 'Weekend' for example).

I can't say which was the 1st... But to find your answer, I'd search around the early 80's. About the time the "dub" mix came into existence. The acapellas seemed to be a part of the whole "alternative b-side" phenomenon that took shape then. When remixers, like Munzibai & Morales, etc... were replacing the standard 7" mix, or instrumental versions, with "mixing tools".
