Question Mixes (audio montage) - Which one stands out?

I just like mixes (audio montages).

In the late 70's and 80's, the Montreal DJ's radio stations where famous for airing montages , but only a few officially (anonymously) made it to vinyl.

I remember spending hours "trying to" do montages with my cassette deck and scarce vinyls (my parents almost lost their sanity listening to the repeated samples).

I never came close to something that can compete with a finish product.

I can tell from experience that when it comes to gluing and blending musical pieces, it is easy to be condescending. Is is also common to observe a loss of inspiration as the mix goes by. A common mistake is to "make some time" generally towards the end of the montage.

Historically, the public distribution of audio montages on vinyl always been on the edge of legality. Because of this, they were for most of us difficult to acquire (at least here).

Only specialized DJ shops where carrying copies (often under the counter) and in a limited count. They were also fairly expensive, considering their limited content and a frequent mediocre sound quality.

My preferred montage that was issued on vinyl is called "Hands Up", a 1981 production.

I have rarely heard such a pleasant blend from the beginning to the end. In my opinion, it is a flawless masterpiece.

By listening to it, a trained music lover can tell how much work has been put to it and also that the DJ who did it has a great knowledge of music.

Mixes, bridges, cut-outs, everything is used. It's simply astounding how many "songs per square inch" are utilized (sometimes as much a three songs in piggyback).

It has all the qualities I look for; it's "danceable", it contains an extensive musical choice, the songs are perfectly blended and there are no overkill effects.

    What is your favorite one?

    Excellent montage !!!

My first question is ...what is the music between 4:30 and 5:13 ??? :icon_biggrin::icon_cool:

And I know this isn't answering your question about personal favorites CT, but I had a thought about what I think makes these projects such a delight and that is the way they offer a micro representation of the disco experience . It was not just individual songs that clubbers were responding to .... it was the conglomerate of them in the coarse of an evening ... how the songs interwove and banged against each other ... how the evening's total music package flowed.. ..
These medleys sort of offer a sped up version of the night's journey.

AND , no matter how good the song being played at the moment in a club was ........ there was still the internal wonderment of what the next song to be played would be.

While listening through these medleys, that thought pattern is the same ........... it just doesn't take as long to find out !! :icon_mrgreen: ....

I can hear three songs sometimes blended together, sometimes in succession.

I know for sure it's The Mexican (Babe Ruth's original version) with a background beat from a song that I don't know.

Spank then gets blended in with the background beat above that I could not identify. All this with The Mexican over all this.

I tell you there are a lot of snippets hidden in this montage. I didn't do the math but I wouldn't be surprise to count over 50 songs embedded in it.

On my side, the song version that tickles me is right before the one you've highlighted.

It's a version of Get Down Tonight (probably not sang by K.C.) where I can hear get happy instead of get down tonight???

As a Montrealer ; what a trip down memory lane !!
Yes CKMF and CIEL [when Michel Jasmin switched stations] were famous for creating those pearls.

Later in the 80's CKOI joined in the fun.

One of my faves was of course the Donna Summer medley that CKMF played back in 1983 ; I say 83 because towards the end you could hear Romeo and She works hard for the money.

I seem to remember one that was done with Giorgio Moroder's best known productions.

Yes, and for the most part they faded away.

There must be a few individuals out there who have some of these mixes locked on a compact cassette in cold and humid basement.

That "HANDS UP" montage was also released as "LET'S HAVE SOME MUSIC NOW",a montage that revisted the beginnigs of disco from 1972-1981,with some classic rock thrown in(woman from tokyo, you ain't seen nothing yet,the mexican...).This mix was made by two deejays from quebec city.Starts off with BLONDIE's "RAPTURE",and finishes with "BONGO ROCK" by THE INCREDIBLE BONGO BAND(1972).

Nice mix. The 'get happy' vocals are probably flown in from Jimmy Bo Horne's cut of the same name. In the tail end of Babe Ruth's The Mexican are the drums from Bell & James 'Friday Night', 12 inch mix. I can't ID the drums over top the first part of the Mexican, although they do sound really familiar. Perhaps they're from 'My Love Supreme' by Milton Hamilton?.

That's a great mix up, I've never really be a fan this kind of montage apart from the more break beat orientated things like "The Lessons" and "Big Apple Productions" cut ups.

Well I think they may have been a bit sneaky and the first part is the "Bombers" version of "The Mexican" then it cuts to the original "Babe Ruth" version, but I'm probably wrong.
