The Temprees one attempt at disco didn't make it

    *****

Marky is winding up the 1976 charts so it would appear The Temprees' (an early 70's soul group) one attempt at disco in that year didn't cut it ....
    :icon_mad::icon_sad: ......:icon_question:......

    This song
through Epic Records was their one stab at a comeback after originally being with Stax Records a few years prior :

I FOUND LOVE ON A DISCO FLOOR The Temprees

Blame it on the lite-weight lyrics (????) :icon_confused: ....still, the production on this Philly-like effort was tight !! And, with almost three minutes of instrumental in the last half . :icon_biggrin::icon_cool:

Does the bass line sound a little something like A LITTTLE LOVIN' by The Raes ????Same arranger ....

British Black Music and Blues And Soul magazines printed favourable reviews of this track but I never saw it in record stores here until it appeared on a Phillysound/disco comp, along with Biddu Orchestra's "Summer of 42" . Still have the album of course. Lovely tunes both or what.

I'm not familiar with the group but I actually quite like the cut.

Not too, too familiar with the group, but I have this cut on 45rpm, and it's a mainstay of my collection !!! Thanks Remicks for reminding us of this "lost" tune . . . I'll check my various Billboard sources 2nite to see if it charts anywhere at all (to at least date it more specifically when it was getting airplay or club play).

I'm surprised it didn't do well. Before buying it a few years ago, I kept reading about it in different places. It got more mention than most Salsoul records.

Remicks . . . I checked, and "I Found Love On A Disco Floor" reached #78 on Billboard's R&B charts in March 1976. It was the Temprees' final entry on that particular chart (and first in 3 years), so this disco cut was an attempt at a comeback that didn't quite take off. Seems their biggest splash was a few years earlier, in 1972, when they appeared in the film Wattstax, and had their rendition of the Shirelles' "Dedicated To The One I Love" become a top 20 R&B hit that briefly charted on Pop.

Am I showing my ignorance by saying this...but 6 minutes for a 45 is very unusual and slightly ahead of it's time (1972)?

DiscoDisk, I'll check my books and report back to ya in the a.m. on the Temprees' "At Last" and any chart success it may have had on a variety of '70s era charts.

Hair In the Wind . . if by 6 minutes, you mean the tune that's in the video clip way up above (posted by remicks), then that tune's actually from '76, when longer dance tracks were becoming the norm.

    If there's a 6 minute tune you're referring to from '72, do share :icon_exclaim:

Re: The Temprees one attempt at disco didn't make it

DiscoDisk . . .I checked for Temprees' chart listings . . . and found no evidence that "At Last" charted on either the UK chart (which I believe charted up to 75 positions) or the U.S. R&B and Pop charts, and even the "Bubbling Under" chart (which often tracked the U.S. tunes from #101 to around #120). The only tune that seems to have charted for them between their aforementioned '72 success and their '76 disco "comeback" was something called "Love's Maze", which hit #75 on the R&B charts in '73.

Thanks for the input all !

Listening to this again ...I think its very well done .... especially the song's second half .... , but perhaps its got a bit too much of that bubble gum slant to it .... Sort of that Sylvers HOT LINE/BOOGIE FEVER angle ...

The guys in the clubs weren't looking to dance to songs whose sound appealed to the teenybopper crowd.:icon_mrgreen: They didn't particularly want to see their stars (like Grace Jones and Dc LaRue! ) on the cover of SIXTEEN MAGAZINE :icon_lol:

Much in the same way Tavares had trouble maintaining their presence I think ....

(LOL), Remicks . . .as Tavares' and the Sylvers' recordings of '76 are in my top 5 disco faves of all time, I guess my tastes in music just follow the teenybopper crowd, which is :icon_cool: by me (I also EXCESSIVELY dig the Archies and the Partridge Family, so I guess I'm a bubblegum boy).

Remicks, I join you in love for the Staples . . .THOROUGHLY enjoyed a couple of years back seeing Mavis and her sisters (at the time, Pops was ill) perform in the Gospel Tent at the N.O. JazzFest. Was quite daring for them to perform "Let's Do It Again" in that particular venue, considering they caught all sorts of flack back in '75 for that damn-sexy tune.

Also . . .another fave is "(If You're Ready) Come Go With Me", which beckons the listener to reach a higher plane of peace/understanding . . . and how timeless are the lyrics: "No economical exploitation / No political domination". Certainly sounds like it could've been written in '08 as opposed to '73:icon_exclaim:

I agree on the Staple Singers - I'll take you there! Now that was soul as far as I'm concerned.

Another favorite out of the closet for me...Bette Midler's - Do Ya Wanna Dance.....far far better than the Beach Boys! =]

slightly unusual in my experience, but I have a Bob Seger 45 that was over 6 minutes, and as I recall the Beatles "Hey Jude" 45 was over 6 minutes, and I have (had) a Steppenwold 45 that was 9 minutes long..sounded like crap, though.

Very much so. You can actually sing the words over the riff.

Thanks for this discovery ; btw I love the YouTube video. Doesn't the guy seem to relish saying the word DISCO ????

"If You're Ready" was a good song (I am quite partial to "Touch A Hand, Make A Friend" and "Oh La Di Da"), but all of these social-message/ "Imagine"-esque utopia songs are pretty much redundant. It's no surprise by the late '70s that cynicism was firmly in place and songs like "If You're Ready" seemed badly dated. As for the probability of "If You're Ready" being written in '08, I think a large section of the public wouldn't mind political domination....
