I'm confused about the identity of British singer Sylvia Mason or Sylvia Mason-James

Sylvia Mason is listed as vocalist with Voyage, and Sylvia Mason-James as a backing vocalist with Simple Minds, the Pet Shop Boys and several other artists. Are they one and the same, anyone know? The information on Wikipedia doesn't clear it up for me. Thanks.

They are indeed the same person.

From Voyage to Evelyn Thomas [b.vox on Have a little faith in me and No time to turn around].And from a featured guest spot on Chicane's Strong in love to Scott & Leon's Shine on in 2001 to her exquisite vocals on many Pet Shop Boys gems ; Sylvia is always shining greatly.

I used to belong to the Pet Shop Boys official fan club 'til 2002 & once wrote to ask them if it was the same Sylvia Mason who sang on Voyage records & their records but I didn't get a reply. So now I know for sure from a much more reliable source!

Yes Sylvia did a solo LP produced by Voyage, the "hit" was "We Gotta Dance", great percussion break in the song, unfortunately the LP was pretty forgettable, despite her great vocals.

I'd sure like to hear it though, because all 4 of Voyage's albums have lots of tracks I like and it's hard for me to imagine them doing an album without any songs I'd probably enjoy.

The LP is available on Vinyl Records, LPs, CDs and Rare Albums. Out of Print Music Albums and Imports. - GEMM.com a few sellers have it for around $10.00.

thanks, disco kid. I'm probably not quite $10.00 curious but I'll keep an eye out for it in my record hunts!

I was just wondering about Sylvia Mason and, lo and behold, there's already been a discussion about her. I've always loved her vocal on "Touch Me In The Morning" from 1998 and just discovered her song "We've Gotta Dance" from '79 which is quite nice and so Voyage-like. It's too bad that I didn't know about it back then because I couldn't get enough of the "Fly Away" album.

My favourite Chicane song and I had no idea that it's Sylvia's lovely vocal on it!

And here she is on the Freemasons hit from 2007...

Sylvia Mason-James has had quite a full singing career and she must have a fondness for making people dance. I'm curious to know what Pet Shop Boys music she's contributed to.

I'm sure it was her singing on their version of 'Go West' (but it was Juliet Roberts in the video).

Thanks SD...and her vocal certainly was a great addition to it too. I think I'll find out where else she's added her voice.

I love this track "We've Gotta Dance". By the way, if you're as big a Voyage fan as I am, did YOU think their 3rd and 4th albums were as good as the first 2? I was shocked when I heard the third album....can't figure out why they used the drummer as the lead vocalist, and the songs have elements of pop and I thought the melodies were really weak. Then there's the fourth album, much of which has a distinct R & B vibe.....not bad to my ears but also not the group's strength....I wondered if maybe the album being released on the Atlantic label (former home of Aretha and Ray Charles) had some effect on the direction of the music. 2/24/2011

No, because they didn't record the album for Atlantic. The group was based in France and remained on the same label (Sirocco/Polydor). Atlantic merely licensed the album for distribution in the US, just as Marlin/TK had with their earlier material.

Yes, that third album was a shock and disappointment but it followed the pattern for all of the other disco artists' albums released in that murky disco afterlife of 1980-81. I never did buy the "One Step Higher" album but I have the wonderful "Let's Get Started" and "Follow The Brightest Star" on their "Best Of" cd.
