There is still tons of Disco records out there

Thanks to a tip by fellow board member Martinus, I went last Saturday to a 2nd hand record fair here in Dusseldorf.

It wasn't very big, but having gone through most of the stuff available my conclusion is that if I ever I would lose my collection (a topic recently discussed) I could replace most of it quite easily. And at not too prohibitive costs.

I also many of the records frequently discussed here by producers and/or acts that I don't care too much for, such as Boris Midney, Claudja Barry, Marlena Shaw, Munich Machine, etc. etc. etc.

I bought some 70's and 80's stuff. Just coz I like to share, here is what I bought:

    Albums:

Lenny White - Lenny White (1977). This completes my Lenny White collection... at 12 Euro.
Fatback - So delicious. For "Girls on my mind".
52nd Street - Children of the night. Excellent album allround, but especially "You're my last chance" and "I'm available".
Watsnonian Institute - Extra Disco Perception. I am very excited about this album. I have their what I now know was their first album, which is a true disco funk gem from 1978 with cooperation from Johhny Guitar Watson (RIP). This album was the follow-up from 1979 and I think it is quite rare. In the end we agreed on 16 Euro...
SOS Band - 1980-1987, the hit mixes. Just to complete the collection.
Bobby Thurston - You got what it takes. Classic.
Jimmy Maelen - Beats workin'. Another album I am very excited about. Jimmy Maelen is a studio session percussionist whose name can be found on many albums. This album from 1980 contains a who's who of other famous names such as Vicki Sue Robinson (!), Luther Vandross, Robin Beck, Irene Cara, John Lluongo, The Brecker Brothers and others.
Steven Dante - Find out. Sequel to his first (and far more successful) efforts with John Jellybean Benitez. Contains "The real thing" and many other tracks produced and written by Monte Moir.
Streetsounds compilation #20. At the time these were excellent compilation albums with unedited 12" versions. I bought it for long versions of "Big fun" by The Gap Band, and Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Vesta Williams. It also contains a 1987 remix of Karen Young's Hot Shot which as far as I can remember is aweful.
Soul Beat double album. Has 12" versions of many hits, compiled by Chris Hill, at the time dance DJ from Radio 107. Great middle 80's dance.

    12 Inch singles:

Two Man Sound - Disco Samba/Que Tal America. Contains 3 versions of Que Tal America.
Donna Allen - Serious. I love this record, and this one contains an 11 minute remix which I did not know about.
Sounds Of Blackness - The Pressure Pt.1. For the Frankie Knuckles remixes.
TC Curtis - You should have known better. Excellent UK dance track from 1985.
Blue Feather - It's love. Great Dutch disco track from 1981 in the style of The Real Thing.
BB&Q Band - Minutes away/Ricochet remixes. To complete the collection.
Sandra - Maria Magdalena. A guilty pleasure... and those who know this track will know what I mean...
Seal - Fly like an eagle. I have this on a tape. I never liked Seal but his version of the Steve Miller Band classic is excellent.
Giorgio (Moroder) - Baby blue b/w If you weren't afraid. This is an excellent find. If you weren't afraid is one of my favoite tracks by Giorgio and I never knew it came out on 12" (although as the B side).
Hindsight - Lowdown. There was a "Lowdown" thread not so long ago and I posted that I could remember an 80's remake that was/is excellent. But I couldn't remember by who. Well... this is it!

Another fun aspect was to meet some likeminded people who had some great further tips on shopping and record fairs. To be continued!

PS $ to Euro is about 1-1.

Congratulations on your very fine purchases, Maarten
It seem that Germany and Denmark are very alike when it comes to record fairs.
A lot of the albums you've bought I located af fairs too:
it goes for Fatback - Check out "She's A go get her"...an wonderful album track)
52nd street (not as good as their fellow countrymen Loose Ends but still an album worth owning)

Steven Dante - wonder whatever happened to him. "Find Out" best tracks are the title track and the little known ballad "It's Only Love"
Oh yeah - hold on to those Streetsounds albums and finally "Hindsight"...now there's a name I haven't heard in ages - I even own their album on CD. Apart from "Low Down" it really sucks :x

    Thanks K-Bee

    I certainly enjoyed myself... :D

With regards to 52nd Street, they had two albums. The 2nd one is called "Something's going on" (1987). It isn't very good, but does contain the gem "Tomorrow".

The female singer Diane Charlemagne has an excellent and very distinctive voice.

After 52nd Street, Diane cooperated with Tongue 'N Cheek in 1990, bringing out an album called "This is Tongue 'N Cheek", and containing "Forget Me Nots", "Encore" and "Tomorrow". This last track was also released as a 12", with remixes by Frankie Knuckles.

In the same year, she also sang on an album by a band called Cool Down Zone.

More recently (2000), she sang three tracks on the album "Re-licked" by Japanese remixer/producer/DJ Satoshi Tomiie (one of the members of the Def Mix collective from NY - other members are Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Bobby D'Ambrosio).

    OK... enough now...

I bought that Steven Dante CD when it came out in '88; in fact it was one of my first CDs ever! Its a very classy affair for a UK artist. Much better than more 'hyped' artists like Terence Trent D'arby & Sade.

Funny you bring up Diane Charlemagne. Admittedly, she has a very distinctive voice. Personally I feel that after listening to, say, a whole album of 52nd street songs, I grow a bit tired of her vocals.

I know that she worked with Satoshi Tomie - I have a 12" with four versions of "Inspired" on it.
    Ecxellent stuff indeed!

Thanks to a tip by fellow board member Martinus, I went last Saturday to a 2nd hand record fair here in Dusseldorf.
I myself am also a regular visitor of record fairs, where I generally only buy 12 inches. Last time I went was at the end of January, below's part of the stuff that I found and bought:

Gwen Pressley & Portable Patrol - Running
    Shannon - Sweet somebody
Mark Fisher feat. Dotty Green - Love situation
Indeep - The records keeps on spinning
Sonique - Let me hold you
Karen White - The way you love me
    Tramaine - The Rock
    Whispers - Contagious

    Groove on

    Hi !
I went to the record fair in Bochum yesterday. It was one of the biggest german fairs and i found some good old stuff:
-Gary Criss: Brazilian nights on Salsoul canada
-Jeanne Napoli: Let's make love (Vigor rec.)
    -Glass: Get your chic together
    -Hallelujah 2000 voc./instr.(Casablanca)
    -'Lectric Funk: Shanghaied (Unidisc)
The prices were cheap (5-10 €) except Jeanne Napoli, which was 20 €.

I had a surprise the other day. Went into a cheap CD shop (All for 3 pesos!) and after a while looking to crap CD editions of whatever I discovered a stack of vinyl near the last wall, all for 2 pesos each. They were all USA editions and seemed new... in fact, some of them were sealed. Now, I remember reading posts by Jeff and other people saying they had found sealed copies of disco records and thinking "lucky bastard"... Then I had like 10 sealed copies of Roberta Kelly's "Troublemaker" in front of me! I couldn't believe it! Of course I bought that and some other things that looked disco, like that Frankie Crocker double LP with a disco version of "Poinciana"...
Now I'm planning to do a "retro" party, play vinyl and have a big moment opening the Roberta Kelly record in the middle of the night... I'll make sure to wear denim jeans for the occasion
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
