    Favourite Disco Producer

Who is your favourite? Obviously, many of these guys did lots of different sorts of music before and after disco.

    Mine are-

Patrick Adams - Obvious choice but he did some great stuff

Malavasi/Petrus - for all the Change material - so classy!

Randy Muller - Skyy, Brass Construction

    Oh no...

I hate these topics coz I can never make up my mind. :(

One thing is clear, the absolute number 1 for me is Jacques Fred Petrus, not only for Change, but also all the other class productions he created. I never tire of listening to his work.

I think I would also have to mention McFadden & Whitehead for everything they wrote and produced on Philly.

Randy Muller, as indicated above, also deserves a mention, as does Quincy Jones, especially all his late 70's and early 80's stuff.

But there are so many more...

I really wanted to mention a lot af names, but I reckon they'll pop up sooner or later in somebody elses post...
so I'll save myself the time

However, I will mention the great Rod Temperton - he may be forgotten in all the lists that are bound to come out of this thread.

    This topic I like :D

Though I will forget important producers...

    Patrick Adams - of course
Vincent Montana Jr - of course
    Rogers/Edwards - of course
Norman Harris - not all of his stuff, but certain gems
Quincy Jones - for the good taste in EVERYTHING
John Davis - not all stuff, but much
Walter Murphy - not much, but still some
Jay Chattaway - he hasn't made much, and what's made is also jazzfunk, but with a superb disco feeling
    Thord Baldursson/Jürgen S Korduletsch/Tom Moulton - for the sexy Munich/NY disco sound
Kenny Lehman - for the Chic-ish sound of Lemon and Roundtree (does someone know what else he's done?)

    There you got some...

I adore Narada Michael Walden's many productions from '78- '88 & I also love Gregg Diamond's stuff. Oh & I have to say Quincy Jones' stuff like (that!) other people have already mentioned. There are dozens I like really & its hard to choose favourites but nevertheless, a good topic!

    Early Days:

Barry White (Love Unlimited & LU Orchestra & himself),
Gamble & Huff (O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Three Degrees, MFSB, Lou Rawls, Jones Girls, Teddy Pendergrass)
Meco Menardo (Gloria Gaynor, Carol Douglas)
Jacques Morali (Village People, Ritchie Family)
Michael Kunze (Silver Convention, Penny McLean)
Tom Moulton (Grace Jones & all the mixing for The Trammps and almost EVERYONE ELSE!!!)
Gregg Diamond (Andrea True Connection, Bionic Boogie, Gloria Gaynor)

    And Then....

Giorgio Moroder (THE BEST!!!!!!-- & all his associates, too!!!)
Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards (Chic, Sister Sledge, Miss Ross)
Quincy Jones (Miss Jackson (the really NASTY one), Rufus & Chaka Khan, Patti Austin)

That's off the top of my head. Some research will yield lots more good names, I'm sure.

2 others i really like & dont seem to have been mentioned yet are Rinder & Lewis (El Coco, St.Tropez, Le Pamplemousse), & Giuliano Salerni (Hi Gloss, Ultimate).

BTW K-Bee, did Rod Temperton actually produce records? I always thought he just wrote songs.

Didn't Rod Temperton produce Heatwave? And I think he was seriously involved in Quincy Jones productions too.

Norman Whitfield (The Temptations ("Papa Was A Rolling Stone"!!!!!), Undisputed Truth ("You + Me = Love!!!!!); Rose Royce ("R.R. Express"!!!) & Yvonne Fair ("It Should Have Been Me"!!!!)

Isaac Hayes (Theme From "Shaft") --the template for early Disco -- gritty streetwise Sly Stone Funk meets lush uptown Barry White strings. It was a whole new sound!!!!! Extemely influential on producers of the early 1970's.

MPS, I have many records where Rod Temperton gets a writing credit (artists such as Bob James, Anita Baker, Bros.Johnson & Heatwave) & I have many Quincy jones LPs where Rod writes several tracks but none of them seem to name Rod as a producer or even a co-producer.

Some great choices, I agree with all of them. When you think there was super super talented people making this music.

I've been thinking about the subject and some others I've come up with, some of which

maybe get less propls and aren't nessacerily strictly "disco" producers.

Freddie Perren - for Tavares, Eyvonne Elliman and Demis Rousous "Love.."

George Duke - for his own "I want you.." and "Brazilian Love Affair" but also for De De Brigdewater and others

Maurice White/EW&F - obvious, but not very many records sound as good as theres do!

I really rate the ex CHA guys - Bert Reid, Ray Rock & William Anderson. They did great early 80's stuff like Rocket, Unlimited Touch and Trilark

    Regarding Rod Temperton....

Leader of the disco-fusion band Heatwave and an important producer/arranger/keyboardist for years afterward, Rod Temperton wrote hits, including "Always and Forever," "Boogie Nights," "Baby Come to Me," "Groove Line," and "The Lady in My Life." As part of Quincy Jones' studio masters, he wrote the title song from Michael Jackson's Thriller. His chart career began in the mid-'70s when Keith and Johnny Wilder recruited him to collaborate on Too Hot to Handle, their 1976 debut album as Heatwave. Two hits, "Boogie Nights" and "Always and Forever," stormed the R&B charts. Even while he continued in Heatwave during the late '70s and early '80s, Temperton worked on many outside projects (the Brothers Johnson, Patti Austin, Herbie Hancock, Rufus & Chaka Khan) often overseen by Jones. For Jackson's solo breakout on 1979's Off the Wall, he wrote two songs ("Rock With You" and the title song) and worked on the arrangements. Three years later, Temperton wrote "Baby Be Mine," "Lady in My Life," and the title song for the 1982 commercial blockbuster Thriller. He also appeared on many of Jones' solo albums: Back on the Block, Q's Jook Joint, and From Q With Love. — John Bush

    Steely, Markey & MPS
 I might have been too fast
Rod Temperton is mostly a songwriter(allthoug a very talented one I might add) . Somehow I didn't really notice that we were supposed to talk about producers.
    sorry about that.

    I'll mention some others then:

    Kae Williams (for Curtis Hairston)
Steve Harvey (For himself & Total Contrast)
Eumir Deodato (Juicy and his own stuff)
Masters at Work (for keeping real dance music alive the last 15 years)

+ all the the producers mentioned so far -----and then some!

    best producer?

Who is the producer of Debbie Jacobs first LP? I think it was Paul Sabu. I think he produced a lot of nice stuff. Georgio Moroder was behind so many divas as well...

It was really all Jacques Morali. Belolo, although given songwriting credit on all the tunes, was the executive producer. What this little distinction means is that he provided the money, handled all the business dealings, and did all the boring (but very important) paperwork that made the music possible. As part of the deal, he got his name on the records and songwriting credits, even though he had very little to do with the actual music. He owns or controls all of Morali's works. For example, the Village People wanted to record new versions of their Morali-penned material -- but he nixed that.

You'll note that some albums say on them "Composed and Produced by Jacques Morali", even though they list Belolo's name on the production and songwriting credits (plus whoever wrote the lyrics).

It's true, Graham Start, I saw some The Ritchie Family's LP and the "Can't Stop Prodution" has Jacques Morali (and sometimes Ritchie Rome) like Producer. Henri Belolo is the Executive Producer or the General Supervisor. Jacques Morali has the inspiration and Belolo is the boss. I'm just learning :P .

Hey guys, don't forget Gino Soccio. Deodato (for his work with Kool & The Gang) and Narada Michael Walden also have room in my list.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

Not considered as a disco (year: 1982) but Hubert Eaves III was the producer of the stunning funk "Keep On" by D Train.
