STEELY it starts tues and ends sat 1st march and i believe some nights are sold out already.these dates make it really difficult for me but im going to try my best will look into flights this week i might just make sat 1st,can you tell me where is this theatre in relation to oxford rd train station? this play looks as though its going to be good with lots of humour & music.
and JAZZ ill ask the cast if they can do one about purley top rank but i think they will say no probibly because they could never consume those vast amounts of alcahol

D.Disk, Contact theatre is about a mile or so along Oxford Road as you head south away from the city centre. It's a very strange-looking building on the right side of the road; you'd be hard-pushed to miss it! I must try to get tickets myself b4 they all go!! :-?

marky i think ive gone into this before in this northern soul section.
wigan casino was just the biggest northern soul all nighter ther ever was it ran from 73-81.wigan is a small lancashire town the building was a massive old ballroom with a minature version within, very run down dark and thousands flocked there every week from all over great britain whatever way they could get there if you were lucky enough to have a car great otherwise you would have to hitch-hike in some cases 100s of miles or jump the train[travelling without purchasing a ticket, then all exit together at speed leaving the ticket collector spinning!]
99.9999 % of the kids were high on anphetamines and everybody was quite young just creating this electric atmosphere with a style of dancing you wouldnt believe, you HAD to be fit.when you ran up the stairs [nobody walked] your heart was pounding pulled open the door it all hit you the music the heat the atmosphere every week i pulled open that door and thought to myself "fucking hell"
im going to post this for fear of loosing it and continue.....

......... it was also the friendliest place you could ever imagine as it was like a big secret nobody else knew what the hell was going on there, the police, local people, the council, the press boy, was there outcry so all this added to the excitement getting chased by the police, police roadblocks the high of the fear, remember england was a very different place then if you were caught with a pocket full of amphetamines you were in trouble!i still have a broken back tooth done by the police to prove it!
a lot of people wouldnt thank me for saying this but for me the casino had two fantastic years but the new records wernt coming fast enough for me so an hours drive up the road was ian levines rival club was where i would defect to where a whole new sound was emerging but as blackpool mecca ended at 2a.m we would still end up down the road at wigan for the crack these kids were pioneers of something that is quite normal today they created a whole way of life its something im proud of,since the casino i went to many other clubs and many other all night clubs and none has ever come close to the atmosphere that wigan had, thats why in manchester there is such a buzz about this play were talking about, its packed out and i guarantee everyboby that comes out of this theatre will be crying ! im not really sure how they can do this in a play i know some of it centres on the q to get in, the crush, the wheelin and dealin the humour and the doormen screaming "stop pushing at the baaaack" !!

We gave the limmo a miss & actually walked ourselves DD! (its only 20 mins walk from my house). Well, did u enjoy the show? We definitely did & was interested to see Don Ray & Eddie Holman mentioned as they went on to big 70's disco careers. I know one of the leading actors as he's worked for Brian's touring acting company & I know he's really into Northern Soul (his back-flips were amazing eh?!). Did it bribg back memories? (I was filling up at the end when the place was closing down!)

yes STEELY i really loved this a real treat. when i arrived and bought the programme and realised there was a cast of just 4 i thought id wasted a plane ticket, but what those 4 actors acomplished in a couple of hours was incredible from eugenes first shouted words "wigan casinowh 1973-1981 did it really appen? i got goosebumps.you never actually had to have been at the casino to enjoy this or not to be from the north of england in two hours they showed you what it was like over an eight year period to have been there in words music and jokes explained the boredom drabness, hoplessness of what most people faced in a [then]northern town, leaving school ending up in a dead end job with not too much prospects for most people and how northern soul grew out of that. they showed us how people walked talked, smoked and danced.the use of old granada t.v footage of the casino made it all come alive as they danced in front of the dancers on the film the editing was superb as all the out-takes that were never originally used in the film were edited in,the dancing was great with the cast even cheekily displaying the casinos rival club the meccas dance steps as they cut in the fast and funky and **** rare "ton of dynamite" by frankie[love man]crocker an early turbo release.the jokes were great when eugene and danny were discussing eddie holman records and eugene was playing with himself and trying to hide his erection
how many northern soulies does it take to change a lightbulb...43..1 to change it and 42 to discuss weather the original was better or not! and the toilet scene where eugene was trying to find his manhood after hed dropped his first speed  ..............................

..............taking us on to the casinos close in 81 and how devastated people were and how messed up some people were after living in this world and this world only for 8 years as nothing else mattered to them.
four great actors,i know the guys are into the scene the girls im not sure, but if they arnt thats some acting [and dancing] especially maxine who made you feel like you knew her from there.a great night out a great theatre [WHO designed that!!] with great management and staff, there were loads of people waiting in line for return tickets and just before the show started i turned around the management had let EVERYONE in to stand at the back :P then i heard a guy that was sat behind me say to his mate "come on lets give our seats up,weve seen it already lets give someone else a chance" thats northern soul friendlieness no hasstle just good times :P ..............

.............also steely a great point you picked up on about don ray and eddie holman theres a big connection between northern soul and disco namely loads of artists, producers writers and players wernt new at all and had been around a lot longer than people think and had a big hand in creating disco[check out the credits on the back of disco albums youll be amazed] i could write a book about this but ill spare you that and just give a few examples right off the top of my head groups/artists that had been around for years cutting sixties sides intruders,3 degrees, ohio players, patti austin, van mccoy owned labeles wrote and produced everywhere.the parliments[revilot/golden world] became parliment, ebony ivory and jade came out of the jive five, the ritchie family came out of honey and the bees, moses dillard was behind the saturday night band, the fatback band were gerry and paul and the trammps were the volcanos! who cut great sides for artic records in philly where hall and oats hung out as kids, the list is endless some people think de-lite was a new label that goes back to the sixties and all platinum goes back further than people think.garnett mimms, ronnie walker o.k ill stop [sorry i had to do this in 3 parts]

This sounds like a great night out. Please let me know who the organisers are or if they're going to put it on in London. I think it would work down here so well.

hi PHYLLISHYMAN the play is now running in leeds ending next saturday and thats it  im sure theyre all astounded at the response to this [im sure leeds will be as sold out as manchester was] so if the actors arnt too committed with other things theyll consider doing more as ive seen in many music mags that people in the south are pretty dissapointed, however theres talk of another big west end production now :P
theres lots of things getting planned now for this year as its wigans big anniversary year including t.v documentries etc with one due soon i believe with a possible title of "its gettin' mighty crowded"

hi STEELYDAN yes the burger king[or isnt it kentucky fried chicken?]theres been loads of adverts using northern soul records but these are the BEST!!there must be a whole series of them the ones ive seen are the one where theyre in a soul collectors shop and theyve closed it"due to alterations" and the staff eat their chicken and then start dancing to "i cant get away"-bobby garrett and theres a poor vinyl junkie staring through the window desperate to get in! and the other and ive only seen it once seemed to be set in a club and used that 15,000 pound motown rarity "do i love you"-frank wilson,i love these ads theyre really cool i want to see more, are you seeing more round your way? who would have ever thought this! i wonder if they show these in america??

I heard Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) on Jazz FM on the PY (Peter Young) show yesterday. It's been going through my head ever since... Don't suppose it was one of the 2 originals, though!!

What I would give to find a 3rd copy ......
