    can someone share their experience

with the copy protected CDs? It appears I have my first one. When I put it in and try to burn individual tracks onto a compilation Cd, my CD burner doesn't even acknowledge that the disc is there. Is that how they work? I could almost understand copy protections on major releases, but this is just a bargain bin Cd ("You Can't Stop the Bum Rush" by Len). Thanks.

It depends what type of copy protection scheme they use. However, they all have audio CD data on them (they wouldn't work in regular CD players if they didn't). Generally, they work by having two sessions on them: a data one and an audio one. Your computer automatically loads the data one (which can be very bad) whereas a regular CD player will only "see" the audio one.

Some copy protection schemes will effectively ask you to install them, but you can decline. Others (like the infamous Sony ones) will install even if you decline the EULA. SunnComm auto-installs on XP unless you have disabled autorun, and is very difficult to remove from a PC. Once it's on there, it will prevent you from ripping the disc, even with something like Exact Audio Copy.

The "Copy Control" one will make certain drives choke and give bad rips, but newer ones seem to be able to handle them.
