Re: Denise Montana and Goody Goody

I haven't been able to find any information regarding when this track was originally released (if it ever was). I'm thinking it was a leftover from the Goody Goody sessions, or maybe it was recorded but just not put out as a single. Vince was digging out tracks from the vaults when he put together those CDs he's selling through his website. He included 'Getting Together' in a stereo mix, which I don't think was released in that form back in '73 (I've only heard mono mixes of bootlegs of the original 45).

I Wanna Know was also recorded and put onto record back in '75 on the Disco Express record (i.e. Volume 1) on RCA Records. On that LP, the vocalist was credited as Sunny Gale. I prefer that earlier Vince Montana production version to the later Denise Montana version.

Here's the Disco Express track listing:

I like the Goody Goody album. A lot of the songs were quite ambitious. The one that sticks out is It Looks Like Love. For me, that track totally stands out. The feel of it, and the way the instruments slowly fade in and fade out are really unusual. Montana was always trying something different, not sticking religiously to the disco formula. But sadly It Looks Like Love didn't get the remix treatment back then. I don't think it was plugged. #1 DeeJay was put out as a 12inch, which had a longer mix than the LP on one side, with an instrumental mix on the flip. And the musicians on the sessions were probably Baker Harris & Young, plus the other reliable Philly guys like Larry Washington on Congas.

Could you post the link to the page? I'd have to hear it. I just know there were two versions of the song recorded. The Denise Montana one sounds like a Goody Goody track, while the Sunny Gale version is from 1975, so its got that classic earlier Philly sound. I don't know if it was even released as a single. I've only ever seen it mentioned on the Disco Express record.

Edit: I found a website selling the Denise Montana version, which is on a CD called Philly Ear Candy: http://www.discomusic.com/cds-more/1079_0_3_0_C/

It has audio samples which you can check out.

Edit: Okay, I located a sample online of the Sunny Gale version from Disco Express:

Thanks for the link. Funny, some of the friends include Larry Levan and Sylvester, who I could have sworn don't have internet access in their current locations!

That version is the Goody Goody one with Denise Montana. I've only seen it on those Montana CDs, so my feeling is that it was an unreleased recording. Too bad he didn't also put out the Sunny Gale version. Maybe RCA is tying it up in legal issues. The other Vince Montana track on that Disco Express record is also a sweet one, Blood Hollins' 'How Have You Been'. You can hear it on this person's mix which you can stream (it's the 4th or 5th song):

For some reason I couldn't hear the Denise version
but can I tell you that the Sunny Gale clip got me
snappin' and clappin'? Loved it! Disco-was this a 12"
or 45 single? And is this considered rare?

For that link to the Philly Ear Kandy CD, if you click on the name, it will open up the audio sample in Windows Media Player. I tried the arrow head buttons, and they don't seem to work. If you have iTunes installed on your computer, the whole Philly Ear Kandy CD, and a bunch of other Vince Montana stuff via Philly World, is available for downloading.

With regards to the Sunny Gale track, I haven't found any other mention of it other than its inclusion on Disco Express. The other Vince Montana production on that record, How Have You Been by Blood Hollins feat Jean Lang, was put out as a 45, vocal and instrumental mixes on respective sides. But I've combed the net looking for details about a Sunny Gale 45 of I Wanna Know, and I wanna know too if it ever got release outside the LP! :) Well, the inclusion of the 6 minute version means its probably the most complete version recorded. The only drawback is that it fades in as a mix from the fade out of the previous track on the record, so you get an overlap of 5 to 10 seconds.

Sure, no problem. I hope I don't sound like I'm putting down the Denise Montana version. It's good as well. Anything that Vince touched turned to Gold! If you listen to the sample in the link, I think it's somewhere past the 4 minute mark of the 6 minute mix. In other words, you get to hear the breakdown of the last section of the mix. Disco Express Vol 1 is a nice compilation. You won't be disappointed.
