    Radio segments to identify

As some of you may have guesses Tjornov and I are into old radioshows and have collected for quite some time now along with other people. We have tried a lot to name the artists and titles which have not been mentioned by the host of these shows. Still some elusive ones either are obvious but not verified or just leaves all of us in the dark.

This is the oldest stuff and the weirdest bunch yet.

    http://80.63.240.116/Kim_Schumacher/identify

There are five mp3 files, in good resolution. They are full segments that are cut out of a radioshow of 50-55 minutes. They range from a few minutes to 5+ minutes. The filenames are a giveaway to the time they were played:

    four digit year
    two digit month
    two digit day
    a '-'
two digit position played in radioshow.
(and possibly some sourceinfo from my collection)

    19821229-17.mp3
The radiohost is just making his end remarks for the show, talking a lot he manages to avoid the artist and title.

    19830607-01_G05B01.mp3
Opening a radioshow, not with music though, this is a hot dialogue between ... ehm a presumably yound man and woman, who may never have met before but discuss the arrangement of spending at short amount of the immediate future together in a suitable comfy setting.
This is not music, but we do not know who made it or what it is called. A short description of this would be 'a pick-up' or even shorter: 'scoring'. This is not the only non musical part of these radioshows, but it is the longest one. This one sounds to be from a vinyl source, is this a long intro to some hot hit of the day?

    19830623-01_G10B01.mp3
The start of another radioshow this one is not mentioned by the host. Actually none of the songs used in this show are mentioned at all.

    19830623-03_G10B03.mp3
In fact a little later on in the same show is another puzzle. I like this one, yet it is so elusive I cannot buy it on a record as I do not know what it is. It comes off sounding like a dub or instrumental to me.

    19840213-10_G08B09.mp3
This one is quite possibly The Beepers dance version of the Blue Thunder Theme (written by Arthur Rubinstein). It sounds like a (synth doing a) helicopter (impression) in the beginning and then the Blue Thunder theme comes up and gives it away. My problem is that noone using WinMX is sharing this song so I cannot verify this. Roy Scheider and Malcolm MacDowell is in the movie which although somewhat dated has a reasonable plot, good suspense and a young Daniel Stern.

Well that ought to be enough to keep you occupied, sorry there is no prize, but if you like you can have your name mentioned on the site where we keep the information we collect about all those radioshows. http://www.kimschumacher.dk
(warning: the site is mostly in danish as the most english parts are just artist and song combinations. Really!).

Sorry, I have no clue on this one.

This is the delicious Marlena Shaw from her 1975 Blue Note album, Who is This Bitch, Anyway? What you're listening to is the intro to the song Street Walkin' Woman. This dialogue is so hot they even gave it its own title "You, Me & Ethel". I've always loved this and laugh everytime I hear it. The guy is sooo lame and she is sooo bored  . It actually runs 3:17 seconds with her leaving him on the street with, "I'm tired, you're tired, and you're $25.00 is tireder than both of us." The song itself is not a dance/disco piece but Marlena in pure jazz form.

What I'm hearing is the bootleg remix of Love Is The Message by MFSB. This one has more sound effects than usual so I don't know if it's another bootleg or just the radio jock doing overlays.

This one is pissing me off :x ! It's the instrumental b-side of something I have and can't remember. I've used it on tapes several times so if no one here remembers I'll have to dig. (God I hate searching these 12"s.) :(

You're right, it is The Beepers, Theme from Blue Thunder. MCA Records 12" Dance Version, # 13966. It has a 'long' 8:45 a-side and a 'short' 3:35 b-side.

Way 2 Go - I'm so happy you set up the Schumacher site but I wonder why I haven't come across it before?.
D.J. Kim Schumacher is completely unknown outside Denmark but for us danes, he ment everything. He was truly the most important guy in danish music radio broadcasting in the 80's and he paved the way for all the rest.

Keep up the good work! :)

Pete Shelley - "I don't know what it is" (that is the true title, and it's from 1981, I think), on the same side, prior to this track plays "Witness the change"
The record is playing way too slow, something like -8%

Pete Shelley - Witness the change (1981) it's the original version with some goofing stuff added by the DJ, pitch control appears to be 0.0% for this track. BTW, this track was requested before by JOL.

I don't know why but the name Schumacher rings a bell :P

I did not know that this particular was by a jazz artist, had I known that I would not have asked on a disco site. I like people with a broad taste and appreciation of music.
You did 3 of 5 and that ain't bad. And disco1999 did the other two. This is great.
I have put your comments on our site.

    Thank you.
I think I know why you have not come across out site before:
    - you have not read Se & Hør on a regular basis.
    - you have not read the mailiing list of jubii from some months after the site started.
    - you have not used Yahoo to look for Kim Schumacher fan clubs
    - you have missed the article in Ekstrabladet which dealt with a lot of people from the 80ies who have made it into cult status on the danish internet.
Now before you say, oh but I should not have missed an ad or shared banner for the site. But no one has seen such. We do not advertise our site. It is either by jungledrum, luck, chance, or searchengine that people end up on ur site.
We have not registered the domain with any searchengine.
Why? It is a private site, and was actually only made to make it easy for us who collect Kim Schumacher. Really, I'm not pulling your leg - this is a non-commercial hobby site, hosted at a collector in Aalborg.

You are welcome to contribute any information you can using our newsserver news.magna.dk. There are about 15 gorups carried by this server, the one you need has Kim Schumacher in the title. Currently the server holds posts as far back as october 2001. I have a back archive of 2 years prior to that if you feel you are missing out on some old discussion. All discussions are in danish so _you_ would not have a problem, I cannot see how anyone who doesn't understand danish could participate or even read past posts to the server. This situation may change in the future as the newsserver is not hosted by us but we may carry a newsserver too for which we could have local and internatinoal forum. Getting the bets of both worlds :)

I think I will make another batch of things to identify. Discomusic.com is such a great site for it.

This has me puzzled, I do not know why it is so slow, perhaps they tried to beatmix or something. The concept of radiowork in Denmark at the time of this radioshow is somewhat different from US radiostations. Very conservative and I wish I had an anglified version of the biography of Kim Schumacher I wrote, as it touches this very subject. Hmm I will have to think of making a translation. I have been thinking about that since our site started two years ago......

Sorry, I did not realize that.

I would like to know what effects library is used for these radio shows, I identified a bit of Madness ("Hey You") but countless other sounds are being used. I do know that asking for that is strretching everyones ability, you had to be a DJ back then to be really familiar with the library itself, but DJ Rahaan used a train whisle sound to open a mix from 2001 that was used in spring of 1984 by Kim Schumacher, and I believe also by Farley Jackmaster Funk on WBMX in the early-mideighties. (I was not in the US at at that time, but I found some RealAudio files on the net. Someplaces have 4+GB of old danceradio shows from WLBS, WBMX and more with Frankie Knuckles, Farley and so on.)

I don't know why but the name Schumacher rings a bell :P
Well there are a few Kim Schumachers in the world, according to Google there is a researcher at Riisø, the danish atomic research facility. He is not active on the radio he is just... radioactive. A danish junior karate expert, and of course www.kimschumacher.com which seems to be the site of a freelance real estate agent in Illionois, USA.
And the racecar driver Michael Schumacher is wellknown worldwide - but none of them were DJ'ing on the danish state radio back in the 80s. Let me face it and write it like it is, Kim Schumacher almost DJ'ed on the radio, while the other radio hosts just introduced records.

Thanks 4 all the info, Mikkel - BTW you're right....flicking through danish tabloids is not a very big part of my daily doings. I might start now though, if the site's been mentioned and all!! that must meen they're improving on their content - about time, I must say.

I'm impressed by the work you've done...it seems the people at DR must have helped you a lot with the playlists..am I wrong??

I will try to check out your news server as soon as possible.

Well there is no need to read newspapers just to see what goes on at our site. The most recent changes to groups, broadcasts and such are shown on the site to the right, and any newspaper would only comment on us actually making the site rather than what is in it. ...today the world is very superficial.

I'm impressed by the work you've done...it seems the people at DR must have helped you a lot with the playlists..am I wrong??
Yes - you are wrong. Playlist was a city-in-Russia ;) until DR decided to make such available on their website a couple of years back. The radio hsa very few broadcasts preserved as they reused the tapes for new broadcasts. (That's what they told us anyway, but during the journalist strike in september 2002 we were treated with a few of the old shows, among them an on ZigZag broadcast from august 19 1982.
From 1984 DR started sending regular contributions to the Danish Media Collection, and since 1988 recorded all their airtime onto DAT tapes that are stored. In between 1984 and 1988 DR had no obligation to service the Media collection with everything they did, and not much information has survived in the computersystem, prior to 1988 the computer system only has scattered logs of who played - that is who was scheduled to play, not who actualy and in fact performed the role of host during the show. That also shows that the participants of a show like Natradio, Rock-Nyt and others which had works of several contrbuting journalists is only known in the system as who was supposed to host it. There is no note on who hosted when that person got sick nor who privided content to the shows.
So all playlists you see on www.kimschumacher.dk have been made by at least 3 sources.
    1 - What Kim says.
2 - What people who have the records say it is.
3 - Educated guesses. Which sometimes later becomes "2".
