What is your favorite 3 song disco medley?

    1. Cerrone's "Give me Love"/"Love is Here"/"Love is the Answer" or 2. Donna Summer's "MacArthur Park"/"One of a Kind"/"Heaven Knows" or 3. Carol Douglas' "Midnight Love Affair"/"In the Morning"/"Lie to Me"

re: What is your favorite 3 song disco medley?

So funny you should ask this proverbial question since two nights ago I made a disc devoted to the three-to-four-song suite. Some of my favorite threesomes are:

CASANOVA BROWN/(IF YOU WANT IT) DO IT YOURSELF/HOW HIGH THE MOON-Gloria Gaynor
    DO OR DIE/PRIDE/FAME-Grace Jones
    FROM EAST TO WEST/POINT ZERO/ORIENT EXPRESS-Voyage
BUENOS AIRES/I'D BE SURPRISINGLY GOOD FOR YOU/DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA-Festival
    PEANUT VENDOR/FRENESI/BRAZIL-Ritchie Family
HONEY BEE/NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE/REACH OUT, I'LL BE THERE-Gloria Gaynor
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards

Out of the ones listed in the first thread, MacPark Suite followed closely by the Cerrone one.

I love Gloria Gaynor's early ones, and I knwo ehr and producer Meco basically created the form but I have to say as medley's they're not exactly too smooth--the songs segue into each other with a thud.

The McARTHUR PARK [Suite] is like a gem among all the others.

    But other favorites include:

DONNA SUMMER Now I need you/Working the midnight shift
GRACE JONES Tomorrow/What I did for love/Send in the clowns
    GRACE JONES Sinning/Suffer/Repentence/Saved
NOEL Dancing is dangerous/Is there more to life than dancing
AMANDA LEAR Follow me/Gold/Mother.../Run Baby Run/Follow me
CAROL DOUGLAS Fell in love for the first time/Burnin'/Let's get down...
    and
    CLAUDJA BARRY's Dancin' Fever/Boogie Tonight [12in]/Sweet Dynamite {as featured on her 1980 Greatest Hits on Lollipop/Polygram}

It's popular but what can you say, Donna's McARTHUR PARK suite is a standard. It's Donna at her best. It's, it's, it's just awesome

I love the version of Three Degree's first Moroder album that has all three side one songs as a medley (I think that was the UK printing, the US used only 2 blended).

Sorry, but I hate the Grace Jones Broadway medley--partly because she takes gorgeous songs like Send in the Clowns that are in 3/4 time and shoe horn them into a 4 on the floor beat.

The Cerrone one is my favourite without doubt but the other 2 are good too. I think my favourite medley is the Ultimate 'Touch Me Baby etc.' one.

I agree totally! I luv Grace's disco stuff but that medley on the Portfolio LP is awful - the songs just don't work as disco songs - I'd rather listen to Ethel Merman's LP any day!
The medleys on the 'Fame' & 'Muse' LPs are 1000 times better.

Donna begins her thing extremely well - just like dj Lemmings proved last Saturday night when he spinned the first track on the McArthur Park suite for nearly 700 screaming, sweating and stomping punters in Paris, jesus what a night. On Heaven Knows though the energy level has dropped to near zero. Of course Lemmings did not spin that. Carol's medley is a killer until Lie To Me which is a dud. Cerrone's medley has a solid opener and from there on the energy level just accelerates, reaching a wholly satisfying climax. So, Cerrone wins, no doubt about that.

    For Your Consideration:

I'll add to the mix a fave of mine:

"LET ME DOWN EASY/ GOOD MORNING MIDNIGHT/ GREAT EXPECTATIONS" - First Choice (1979)

    From AMG:
"A super three-song medley: "Let Me Down Easy," "Good Morning Midnight," and "Great Expectations" runs for more than 16 minutes and kicks off the Philly trio's second album for Goldmine Records."

I'm a HUGE Grace Jones fan and half the fun is listening to Grace trying to hit her notes !!!! Bless her.

It's more about Tom Moulton's production...in my case.
    Bless him even more.

I personally dig the African Queens trilogy on Side A of Ritchie Family's '77 LP, especially when Cleopatra is described as a "gyrating, vibrating, heartbreaking sister" :icon_exclaim:

A1 African Queens (Nefertiti, Cleopatra And The Queen of Sheba) (4:35)A2 Theme Of Nefertiti (1:30)A3 Theme Of Cleopatra (1:30)A4 Theme Of the Queen Of Sheba (1:30)A5 African Queens (Reprise) (3:40)

But that's what Donna and Giorgio did with MacArthur Park, and it worked wonders!

The version of the song by Camoflauge keeps the proper time signature IIRC.

Another not-so-famous cover that tinkers with the time signature is Bob-A-Rela's version of Pink Floyd's "Money", most of which was originally in a thoroughly un-dance-able 7/8. They changed it to 6/8... still odd as far as disco goes though.

I'm glad someone mentioned Festival's Evita. I especially like High Flying Adored.

My favorite medley would be either side of the Fever album:
Beat of the Night/Work Me/Treat Me Right
or Pump it Up/The Fever Rock/Over the Edge.

    Also Destination's Castles Suite.

And side 3 of Tantra's Double Album:
    Su-ku-leu/Mother Africa/Hallelujah/Get Happy.
"Because there's music in the air."

Graham, don't you mean Rosebud---the flip side of "Have A Cigar"???? :icon_question:

Or did Bob-A-Rela cover it also? :icon_eek::icon_question::icon_eek:

    I'm sure it's Bob-A-Rela, because I don't have anything by Rosebud. :)

I know Bob-A-Rela covered "Tobacco Road", originally by the Nashville Teens, circa 1964-65...

Yup, and "Money" is the song that follows on the album.

All the medleys you mentioned are absolute classics,
but for me the Cerrone takes me to another level, just
complete nirvana. It would leave me breathless on the
dancefloor and it still gives me this great high.

Re: What is your favorite 3 song disco medley?

What about these? More famous for the wraparound 1st title in each case--but there are 3 or 4 songs in the medley/suites....

    Celi Bee
    Side A
    1. Fly me on the wings of love (12:56)
    Act I Higher, higher
Act II Love, Look What You've Done To me
    Act III Midnite Passion
    Epilogue

    Giorgio Moroder
    Side 1
    1. From Here To Eternity
    2. Faster Than The Speed Of Love
    3. Lost Angeles
    4. Utopia - Me Giorgio
    5. From Here To Eternity (Reprise)

Yes but it's both better done, and the original song is in a more adaptable time signature than Send in the Clowns (Sondheim wrote all of A Little Night Music in, sometimes bizarre, variants of 3/4 time). I'm a HUGE Jimmy Webb fan and admit that I play his two Richard Harris albums whenever i'm in the right mood even if Donna's blows the version away for me--but when they fit it into a disco beat they didn't have to mess with the relative lengths of notes, emphasize DIFFERENT notes, etc, the way Grace does. ;)

JussiK I gotta disagree--I feel liek when Heaven Knows starts (especially in the original mix where it comes in more subtly) suddenly you get an extra boost on the dance floor. I've only heard it twice in clubs but people always stayed dancing till the end...
