What Are Your Favorite Disco Lyrics?

I don't think we've ever devoted a thread to lyrics exclusively. I'm always amused when I see member's by-lines using quotable lines from fave disco songs.

Steely Dan has had several memorable ones: " We're lost in music/ caught in a trance" (the story of MY life!!!); "If there's a cure for this, I don't want it"; and currently "Everybody wants to be bourgie, bourgie".

My by-line ("make my feet wanna dance") is from a song by Motion; it's my credo: IF the feet don't wanna move...I'm not feeling the groove.

Jeff uses "a once in a lifetime feeling that occurs every week" from Claudja Barry's "Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes". I had a helluva time figuring that one out--I knew I knew it...but it was a long time coming. DUH!!!

So...anyone wanna attempt a few more great lines from Disco lyrics. Anything that speaks to you?

"Oh, what- wow!!! He's the greatest Dancer!!!"
"Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci--he looks like a still/ that man is dressed to kill"

    or:

    Leather, leather, leather Baby!!!!!

    Well you get the picture.

Thanx 4 the compliment Marky. A lyric that always amused me was the bit on Gichi Dan's (that's Gichi not Steely!) 'Cowboys & Gangsters' where he says 'in the basement if you must'; was he referring to the infamous basement of Studio 54 per chance?

    Hey guys, it's gotta be:-
    She's a Brick House,
    She's mighty mighty,
just lettin' it all hang out,.....
    She' the one, only one,
    built like an amazon

    or
    She's a bad mama jama
just as fine as she can be......
her body measurements are perfect in every dimension
    etc, etc.

    Otherwise
Take me to a place in space,
I'm sick and tired of the rat race,................
    Superman, batman blowin 'all night,
playin' one on one with a meteorite,
    It's outta sight..... etc, etc

    E&OE 'cos they're from memory

OTHERWISE GIVE ME A FUNKIN' INSTRUMENTAL

To mee, disco was never much about lyrics...

And, I do like instrumentals a lot...

If there are to be voices, they should rather be female, imo. I simply find it more sensous then, but that's a personal opinion...

It shouldn't be too complicated either. Hence, "It Looks Like Love" by Goody Goody kinda sums up my ideal when it
    comes to lyrics/voices in disco...

It's not really disco, but "Crystalized" by Milton Hamilton Crystalized has a few lines that I absolutely love:

Every day brings a new outlook
    I can see my destiny
Not one of pain, no-one,(?) nor sorrow
    But ecstacy

I have set my goals before me
    disciplined and organized
ain't got no time for fools and jokers
    full of jive

Marky, I did start a thread a while ago on absurd disco lyrics. I cited, precisely, those lines from "He's the greatest dancer" which I didn't catch in its entirety (I believe there was some discussion about what the hell they were singing... Didn't you take part on that one?)

What I remember of that time was how words like "groove" repeated themselves again and again on song titles, and if the band made an habit of that it sure was good (i.e. Raydio before Ray Parker jr. went solo).
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

One of my favorites which brings back great memories......

"YOU KNOW I GOT OFF THE SUBWAY YEASTERDAY
AND THIS MAN WAS BEGGING FOR QUARTERS
AND I WOULDN'T GIVE IT TO HIM. SO HE CHASED
ME ALL THE DOWN THE STREET AND STARTED PULLING ON MY DRESS.
WELL I TRIED ANYTHING TO GET THIS MAN OFF,
    I EVEN YELLED...OFFICER!!..OFFICER!!
BUT THE POLICE WOULDN'T EVEN HELP ME OUT.
SO THEN SOME MAN CAME ALONG AND PULLED
THIS MAN RIGHT OFF, AND MY DRESS CAME OFF
AND THERE I WAS STANDING IN MY UNDERWEAR".

from - Kelly Marie: "New York at night"
    That's such a cute song..... :D
    \"Dancing the night away\", forever!!!

Nano speaking of Sister Sledge's "The Greatest Dancer", some of my favorite lyrics are in that song:

    I really wasn't caring
But I felt my eyes staring
At this guy who stood out in the crowd

He had that kind of body
    That would shame Adonis
And a face that would make you mesmerized

    -------------------------------------------------------------
    A champion of dance
his moves will put you in a trance
And he never leaves the disco alone

    Arrogance but not conceit
As a man he is complete
And I said my prayers, please take me home

    He wears the finest clothes
    the best designers, heaven knows
Ooohh from his head down to his toes

    Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci
    He looks like a steal
That man is dressed to kill

I got carried away there  I can definitely relate to what she's saying !

"Midnight Love Affair" - when unknown man and Carol is singing to each other.

    "Contact" -
Across a crowded disco room filled with a maze of fancy people
She stood so quiet and all alone wanting to get the disco fever

    and of course "Love Hangover"
"If there's a cure for this I don't want it".
    Don't call the doctor,
    don't call my mama
    don't call the preacher
    NO I don't need it!

I think I'm forced to quote the lyrics of Candi Staton's "VICTIM" lyrics which are simply fantastic ....

    When I started out
It was just a matter of seeing you every day
I looked forward to the times
When you would come my way, oh yes
I longed just to see you
Wore a smile just to greet you
I'm a victim of the very song i sing
You gave me a brand new reason
To start fixing up my face
Having cocktails at your favorite place
    A table just for two
Got rid of loneliness, now that I have you
I became a victim of the very song I sing
I told you young hearts run free
When I didn't listen to myself
Engulfed by the power of love
I just fell right in, ooh yes I did
    Wasn't hardly worried about tomorrow
    You're my future
As long as I was being satisfied
I didn't need nothing else, no baby
And now, already, I'm being left at home
    I wonder what it is
That makes a man leave a girl so alone
Another woman is usually the thing
Running around, it just don't seem to change
    Victim, victim, victim, victim
I'm a victim of the very song I sing
Why don't you practice what you preach
    That's what everybody's telling me
If my advice is good for others
It's got to be good for me, can't you see
So I try to occupy my mind
Keep myself busy all the time
But the more I try to do
The more I keep thinking of you, ooh baby
Oh well, I guess I'll end up in the lost and found
It Looks like love and me
    We have fought another round
Another woman is his claim to fame
And I'm lucky if I can break these chains
    Victim...
Help me sing doo doo wap, oh oh doo doo wap...

Please read those lyrics quietly, and let me be damned if they're not fantastic .... Ooooh my god I'm shakin ...how can a man leave a girl like Candi ???

Not very original I'm afraid :-? but I have to go along with Nano and Hustlebaby on Sister Sledge and He's The Greatest Dancer. I think the lyrics to that tune are brilliant...

I used to dance to that down in my local "bog standard" (sorry Mr Blunkett! :D) disco and this record made me feel like a million dollars!!

    :)

BTW For you non-UK citizens out there, the reference to Mr Blunkett refers to a political comment that David Blunkett, the current Home Secretary, made a few months ago, that has now become quite famous in the UK ....

Funny, how we keep coming back to this song!!!!!

    Hustlebaby,

I hear several of the lines you quoted differently....

"And a face that would make any man proud"

"my creme de la creme, please take me home"

"he looks like a still "(photo)...

    Hi Marky

I've played that song so many times and it dosen't sound like "my creme de la creme" then again maybe I'm wrong. Back in the days I've heard so many people say he or she looks like a steal. Then again "still" rhymes with "that man is dressed to (kill)". I guess we should go back to that old thread "What Are They Saying"????? :-? If you remember, I asked what were the first few lyrics of "HTGD".

    "Let No Man Put Asunder"
I'm suprised to see your suitcase at the door
Remember the good times, don't cha want some more
    It's not a perfect love, I ??????
I believe its what God intended?????

    "Mighty Real"
Here we out here dancing on the floor
Darling and I feel like I need some more
And I feel your body close to mine
And I know my love gets it ?????

Well, it's been in my head all day so I might as well write it down:

"Where'd you learn to funk like that? C'est bon!"

Those are the Poussez girls, Come On and Do It. Disco and coy sex talk --- can't go wrong. :)

I definitely agree with many here about Sister Sledge's "He's the greatest dancer".
I went crazy Love Unlimited's "High speppin' hip dressin' fella"
And I'm sure all the former jocks here will be happy to remember Goody Goody's "Number one dj"

    Hey Nicknack

I was also thinking of "Come On & Do It" and

and THE song of wisdom and hope :

Wake up everybody bay Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes

Wake up everybody no more sleepin in bed
No more backward thinkin time for thinkin ahead
The world has changed so very much
From what it used to be so
There is so much hatred war and poverty
Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way
Maybe then they'll listen to what you have to say
Cause they're the ones who's coming up and the world is in their hands
When you teach the children teach em the very best you can.

The world won't get no better if we just let it be
The world won't get no better we gotta change it yeah, just you and me

Wake up all the doctors make the old people well
They're the ones who suffer and who catch all the hell
But they don't have so very long before the Judgement Day
So won't you make them happy before they pass away.

Wake up all the builders time to build a new land
I know we can do it if we all lend a hand
The only thing we have to do is put it in our mind
Surely things will work out they do it every time.

There are no songs with such lyrics nowerdays

I love the lyrics in "I Am Somebody" by Glenn Jones. positive and uplifting stuff indeed!
Rumour has it that the song was used as part of Jessie Jackson's presidential campaign back in the day.
    Can anybody verify that??

I mentioned it before (but kidz, after awhile it's ALL RERUNS around here--everything old is new again!!!!)

I only came to realize, in the past year or so, what Grace Jones was actually singing about in her "Pull Up To The Bumper" song. I always thought it was about a high-maintenance J.Ho type who needed limo service everywhere.

Duh. We're talking about anal love here, right kidz??? :P

Or as the Howard Stern hetero-assholes call it "A little mud on the helmet". They are obsessed with girls who do anal on that show!!!!! Wonder what that really means? Hmmmmmm?????

    I'm just askin'!!!!!
