NYC had WBLS, WKTU, and KISS.

WKTU and KISS didn't compete against each other; they competed against Frankie Crocker

from WBLS. Crocker WAS WBLS. He set the standards and everybody else followed.

Italian-Americans liked to listen to Rasco; Hispanic-Americans liked to listen to Paco; but everybody listened to the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker. There's only one best and Crocker was it. The man was truly a legend, not because he was Italian, or Hispanic, or Black, but simply, because he was the best.

Very true Fantomas, verrry true. Next to Vaughn Harper, Frankie was known as the man with the "X-Rated" voice!!! Frankie knew how to promote an album. If you can remember back in the late 70's whenever a new album came out, he wouldn't just play the hit, Frankie had a spot about 6pm where he would play the WHOLE ALBUM with no commercial interruptions!!!

Remember that!?! But what was so cool about him was that he was multi-cultural. He ran his 4pm-8pm spot the way HE wanted to. One minute he'd be playing disco, then branch off into jazz, then throw on some salsa, hit you with some James Brown, then mellow you out with some Bob Marley or Peter Tosh!!! That's the way radio should be!!!

But today cats are caught up into that payola thing whereas you're hearing the same 5 songs, 15 times a day, for about 3 months.....!!! C'mon give me a break!!! Frankie used to crack me up when he'd return from one of his 1 month hiatuses, while visiting WBLS's sister station in Las Angeles: "Yes, I was sipping on a Long Island Iced Tea with Donna Summer, and enjoying the California sunshine. I almost hated to come back"!!!:icon_cool:

Notice, that he's always chillin' with Donna Summer........HMMMMMM!!!
Frankie Crocker gave me my DJ's voice that I'm still using today, but my style of mixing came from DJ Ted Currier who originated the mid-nite club mix on WBLS in '78. This was before 98.7 KISS even came out!!!

And last but certainly not least, we can't forget his sign off speech: "MAY YOU LIVE AS LONG AS YOU WANT, BUT NEVER WANT AS LONG AS YOU LIVE. MAY YOU LIVE TO BE 100, & ME 100 BUT MINUS A DAY, SO THAT I'LL KNOW THAT NICE PEOPLE LIKE YOU, HAVE PASSED MY WAY. AND REMEMBER, WHEN FRANKIE CROCKER ISN'T ON YOUR RADIO, YOUR RADIO JUST ISN'T REALLY ON"

    R.I.P......Frankie "Hollywood" Crocker:icon_cry:

    Almost right...

"May you live to be 100, and me 100 but minus a day, so I'll not know that nice people like you have passed away."

Then cue King Pleasure's "Moody's Mood For Love" to play out.

"There I go, there I go, there I go, therrrrrrrre Iiii gooooooo..."
