    Hullaballoo + The Supremes!!!!

In the Sixties Dance Music thread, Stephen mentioned his sister was a dancer on "Hullabaloo"--the mid-Sixties NBC primetime music show. The show debuted in January of 1965 as an answer to ABC's "Shindig" which featured the top pop performers of the day, lip-synching their hits while teenage dancers ( a teenage Teri Garr among them) danced and cavorted in the background.

NBC's "Hullabaloo" was a more grown-up version of that show, sorta "Shindig" meets "The Copa" [famous NYC nightclub] using adult "Tonight" show guest-types as hosts (Sammy Davis, Jr., George Hamilton, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon, Jack Jones, Leslie Uggams Trini Lopez, etc. along with an occasional actual pop star like Petula Clark) and pop stars of the day singing their hits "LIVE" with background tracks or maybe there was a studio "band" (?), thereby "recreating the records" without looking like it was "canned" lip-synching as on "American Bandstand."

[Interesting, off beat guests included WOODY ALLEN on the debut (!), Joey Heatherton, Liza Minnelli, Soupy Sales, Francoise Hardy, Vic Damone, Michele Lee, Lainie Kazan, Bill Dana, Don Adams, and Jerry Lewis and several of his sons!!! Add the top pop acts of the day from Motown and the British Invasion and you get a cross-section of hip and square. Now that's ECLECTIC!!!] :icon_eek::icon_exclaim:

I asked Stephen if his sister was Lada Edmund Jr., a semi-famous dancer, who performed on the show as the "girl in a cage." Foolishly, I forgot about some very heavyweight dancers who also were regulars, including future director/choreographer legend Michael Bennett ["A Chorus Line"/"Dreamgirls"] and his "Chorus Line" leading lady, Donna McKechnie and "West Side Story" dancer, now choreographer, David Winters--all 3 dance legends.

Here's the link for all the credits/dates for the show and all the guests who appeared:

    Hullabaloo TV Show Cast

    Date: May 11, 1965
    Host: Frankie Avalon
Guests: The Supremes, The Byrds, Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs, Barbara McNair, Joanie Sommers
[This is the classic "Back In My Arms Again" debut... my fave of all time!! love the opening choreography back lit to show their silhouettes and the dresses were an orange/yellow/green flower print that looks great in color...fab brunette Julie Christie in "Darling" wigs--see the next clip for a flash of the dresses in color; love when Diana flexes her skinny arm on " it's his love that makes me strong" and the ultimate is the line "and Flo-she don't know cuz the boy she loves is a Romeo"!!! Does it get any better than that????]

[I thought this was the debut performance--but a Diana website says they did it on Ed Sullivan a week earlier---this is their next #1: "I Hear A Symphony"--beautiful dresses--so Audrey Hepburn+Jackie O in style/ great Vidal Sassoon-styled wigs/ false eyelashes that look as thick as caterpillars/ elegant in every way and so superbly sung...love the ladylike bows at the beginning and the bouquets of roses at the end...one of the absolute best!!!]

    5) Show #31
    Date: December 13, 1965
    Host: Robert Vaughn
Guests: The Supremes, Four Tops, The Serendipity Singers, Goldberg-Miller Blues Band
[Don't know what they did on this show...the next single "My World Is Empty Without You" was not out yet--that would be early January..so maybe they did older hits or maybe LP tracks??? from the "I Hear A Symphony" LP??? [not released until Feb. '66]...must search for more info!!!]

Anyway, I had a great kick seeing these great blasts from the past. God bless "Hullabaloo" for allowing Diana, Mary & Flo to actually SING their hits LIVE in elegant surroundings with the backup tapes although the last one ["Symphony"] sounded like it used a live band, didn't it?--really recreating the hits LIVE!!!!

yes, I think this was their "golden period." They do feel like they are still liking each other and growing as performers. Diana doesn't hog the spotlight and they still seem sweet and eager to please.

That's what captivated me about these videos---plus the chance to relive my childhood when I attempted to memorize what I saw here in a brief 2& a half minutes of broadcast and carry it with me for 40 some years!! My memories were pretty accurate.

Also, they sounded great. NO technical mistakes--unlike some other appearances...like on that last video compilation "Reflections"---Diana totally screws up the opening to "I Hear A Symphony" on the Mike Douglas Show...forgetting to sing" You've given me a new love and everyday I thank you love" and starting with "whenever you're near...a symphony"...then gets on track when Mary & Flo sing their parts. I can tell she screwed up...but I wonder how many in the audience knew? Hmmm...watching it again, she smiles kinda impishly when she gets on track---but from then on she's cookin'. However, their dresses for the daytime Mike Douglas show look like they are from J. C. Penny or maybe Beyonce's grandma made 'em!! [yes, that's a swipe at the costuming skills of Beyonce's mama!!! ] :icon_twisted::icon_lol:

    Marky,

I just love that Back in The Arms again clip (and yep, the backlit intro is superb !!!). That's the first chance I've had to see the full song clip, as I first managed to see that super-intro 25 years ago when it was used at the beginning of the Supremes Reunion montage (introduced by Richard Pryor) during the Motown 25 special in 1983. Hard to believe it's now 25 years later, and Motown's 50.

Do you recall seeing that minute-long montage of classic Supremes clips before they introduced Diana ??? (and Mary & Cindy joined her for Someday We'll Be Together). That's right before the "not-seen-by-tv-audience-but-seen-by-the-live-audience" shove between Diana & Mary detailed in Mary's Dreamgirl books of the late '80s.

I have the montage somewhere at home on VHS (as I used it in a late 80s speech in college), but I couldn't find it online. Drat !!!

I wonder if on that show if Joanie Sommers sang "Don't Pity Me"?
a friend of mine considered it a good Northern Soul Cut.

I know I must have taped the Motown 25 special--god why didn't I label stuff??? Or maybe I did--but I'd have to plow through boxes and boxes of stuff to find it. Maybe it's on DVD? I should check Amazon. It would be easier to buy it than try to find my VHS copy!!! :icon_razz:

found this on the Amazon list of Hullabaloo clips shows for sale:

    Volume Three; September 20, 1965 (in colour); Jerry Lewis & Gary Lewis (host) - Help; Gary Lewis & The Playboys - Everybody loves a clown; Barry McGuire - Eve of destruction; Paul Revere & The Raiders - Ooh poo pah doo;
Joannie Sommers - Before and after; plus Top Pop Medley, including It ain't me babe by Gary Lewis & The Playboys
I wonder if they didn't cut clips of performances in several shows and edit them into the dvd version? Oh wait this is from a later show than the Joanie Sommers mentioned with The Supremes in May, 1965....never mind.

Marky-thankyou for this trip back to my childhood.I'm
not sure why,but that "Back in my arms" video has
always been my favorite-the dresses, those bouncing
bobs and the choreography. And there under the
"Nothing but Heartaches" line is a pic of my very 1st LP
-I earned it by helping wash the dishes! Does
anyone remember another teen dance show called
"The Loyd Thaxton Show"? maybe it was just a California
    thing,but I remember it the most.Was Hullabaloo
the one that was filmed on the beach? I have been trying
to find an episode where a young, teenage Cher is
sitting in a diner booth singing "All I Really Want To Do"
-it's in black and white and you can see the beach in the
    backround.

    Thom-
Oh Thommy we had similar taste as young boys I see. :icon_mrgreen: You in sunny Cali and me in freezin' Wisconsin!!! Who had the better deal I wonder? Funny I recall wiping dishes with my mom washing the first time I heard "Where Did Our Love Go"!!!

That clip of "Back In My Arms Again" has haunted me since 1965--I loved the choreography [probably by David Winters] --the girls move so great- all in unison--even Flo-- who sometimes could be the lox in the group! Just sayin'. I wanted to do that choreography--but I only ever saw it once! :icon_evil:

The dresses were great and I now think the flash of color in that 2nd video doesn't do them justice--I saw the actual colors on the cover of a Time Magazine from May, 1965--that had the color photo of the Supremes performing on "Hullabaloo" with photos of several other big pop stars of the day, I would guess The Beatles, The Beach Boys, maybe the Rolling Stones, Sonny & Cher, The Byrds????? I'm gonna try to find that cover. We only had black & white TV so I had to imagine what color the dresses were. :icon_eek: But then I saw that cover--I really wanted to steal it from the school library--but I think I chickened out--unless it's "among my souvenirs" in my mother's attic!!! :icon_twisted:

The beach show I would guess was "Where The Action Is"...a Dick Clark production I think; Lloyd Thaxton was syndicated--I did see some of that living in the northern woods of Wisconsin. I watched them all--loved the music of that era!

My first Supremes LP was "Where Did Our Love Go" that collected their first 3 #1 singles: "Where Did Our Love Go"/"Baby Love"/"Come See About Me". After that I bought the 45 singles of the next 3 singles--so when "More Hits By The Supremes" came out, I already had six of the tracks (A&B sides)...so I never bought it. I was thrifty, I was. :icon_rolleyes:

I'll check YouTube (my new second best friend--after it's nasty younger brother Xtube--my BEST friend] and check for a Cher video.

ah, can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time rewritten every line?

    Re: Hullabaloo + The Supremes!!!!

That's it!!! "Where the Action Is"! I wish they would
release some of these on DVD in complete edisodes.
My main gripe is I want to see the performers AND
the dancers-you know, the kids were sometimes more
groovy than the performers! I need to follow some of
    links and see whats available.
I too then turned to Supremes 45 buying after that
one LP.My next LP purchase wouldn't be until that
1st greatest hits they released. It was a double gatefold
in deep blue with actual prints of the girls done in
swirly stylized brush strokes-I was in Supremes
heaven. They went up on my bedroom wall that day.
As my oldest brother had a huge Jimi Hendryx poster
in his room, the next oldest had the Dodgers and I
had Diana Ross-this was a clue to my parents of
where things were headed.Soon after it would be Bobby Sherman!

Ok, that reminds me of a rather shameful thing I did concerning the first double LP Diana Ross & The Supremes Greatest Hits. :icon_redface::icon_redface::icon_redface:

    Thommie,

I told you before that I had limited funds and many records to buy...so when the Supremes Greatest Hits came out---I had to pass. I had all the hits already and it was pricey for me as it was a double LP. I'm trying to recall what that would have cost in 1967? $12.00 ???? or is that too steep? But I wanted to see the poster drawings of the Supremes inside the package. Anyway, I hatched a plan. A friend of mine named Kathy was having a birthday and I proposed to 3 or 4 friends that we buy Kathy the Supremes LP--not that Kathy really wanted it--BUT I DID!!!! :icon_twisted: I volunteered to buy it and they all coughed up a few bucks and off I went to Ladysmith with my parents to buy it. I did so and it sat in my room sealed for several days. ......Then I got tempted. :icon_evil: :icon_exclaim: I wanted to see the drawings of the girls inside. But I couldn't open it--it was a gift!!! :icon_confused: I was a good boy-- way too much Sunday school--didn't do bad things....but I wanted to see it. :icon_twisted: Anyway my inner turmoil got the best of me and, of course, I slit the plastic on the side to see if I could ease it out without making it too noticeable ...but, damn it!!!-- it was folded so I couldn't ease anything out and had to rip the plastic off to get to the damn drawings!! Yeah, I did it. :icon_twisted: And I played the records too...once or twice. :icon_rolleyes::icon_redface::icon_lol: Then I wrapped it up and presented it to Kathy at her party and I was sooooo busted as the other people who chipped in said "Hey Mark where's the plastic? You opened it. That's not a gift. Why would you do that?" :icon_cry::icon_rolleyes::icon_redface:

BUSTED. I sheepishly tried to say "oh it came that way" and they said "yeah sure." SOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUSTED. All for the love of Miss Ross.

The things we do for love. To this day, everytime I see that LP--this little tale comes to mind. Cue: "I'm Livin' In Shame" :icon_redface::icon_twisted:

    Re: Hullabaloo + The Supremes!!!!

Here's the cover of the May 21, 1965 Time Magazine cover featuring THE SUPREMES [performing "Back In My Arms Again" on "Hullabaloo"].....and what looks like The Beach Boys, Petula Clark, The Righteous Brothers, Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits and ..is that Trini Lopez???? Yes it is and the top photo is of the "Shindig" dancers.

What no Beatles????? :icon_eek::icon_eek::icon_eek: They probably had been on several Time covers already by this point.

    from the Time website:

THE ears of nearly every TIME reader everywhere surely have been haunted, horrified or, at least, reached by that pervasive, durable phenomenon known as rock 'n' roll. This week's cover, a photomontage* put together by Associate Editor Charles P. Jackson, shows some of the young performers who are now at the top of what can only be described as the heap. They are 1) The Shindig Dancers, 2) The Beach Boys, 3) Petula Clark, 4) Trini Lopez, 5) Herman of Herman's Hermits, 6) The Righteous Brothers, and 7) The Supremes. What they and their fellow bobbers of the big beat are like, where the phenomenon came from, and the considerable impact it is having on manners and morals around the world are closely examined in the Music cover story by Writer Ray Kennedy and Senior Editor A. T. Baker.

Markie-What a great story! After opening the LP I
think I would have kept the pictures, though. And
what about poor Kathy?Did she end up keeping
the Supremes or did she trade it for the latest
    Doors LP?

Yes, My love of Miss Ross led me to sin. Contemplating stealing magazines for the school library [ I don't think I actually pulled that one off--but I'm not sure] and plotting to get my friends to chip in on something so I could get my hands on it!!!

Kathy, who "liked" me, as I recall...didn't say anything. It was the others who I bilked out of their cash to purchase what I wanted who made the comments. :icon_rolleyes::icon_redface::icon_rolleyes: It wasn't that big a deal---Kathy got a new double LP with my fingerprints all over it!!! :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol: I'm thinking maybe she liked it better that way...yeah, that's it. I personalized it for her!!! :icon_razz:

.....you sure the real story , Mr. Sneaky, isn't that you... sitting there to yourself in the backseat of the family car .... didn't already have that shrink wrap ripped off and that gatefold jacket spread wide with you checking out the drawings before even getting back home from the store !!! :icon_razz::icon_razz::icon_razz: :icon_lol::icon_lol:

No, remmy...I held out for a long time and then I couldn't hold out any longer and I had to have my fix!!!! :icon_twisted: But then it was too late to get a replacement so I had to give a "slightly used" gift! I think the "shame" factor is what's made this incident stay with me all these years. Should I really still remember **** like this? :icon_redface: :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_exclaim:

Yes, Remmy it's the age of "truthiness." My thanks to Mr. Colbert for coining the word. It's a "Rashomon" world--everyone spins the facts to prove their point of view. I don't think its' gonna change anytime soon. 24 hour Cable TV news has changed everything. They spin all day and all night. :icon_eek::icon_rolleyes::icon_exclaim:
