I have hesitated quite some time before posting this question but now it's time to "release" it.
The Dance version of Duran Duran's The Reflex contains what I believe to be an "ambiguity".
At three times in the song, the sound engineer have introduced what I believe to be the "questionable" sound effect of a...fart.
zSHARE - excerpt.mp3
(for those of you who think that this is a montage with "fartovers", listen yourself at your own copy of the dance version).
I am trying to be as objective as I can but I can't think of any other sound source.
If my theory is right, this had to be put in there as bet between Duran Duran and the sound engineer at the time of remixing.
- "Listeners can take any **** and I will show you". They must have said.
- So, was farting "a reflex" for Duran Duran?
- Is this considered as a "misheard lyric".
Someone tell me that I am not the only one with such a twisted mind.
Let yourself loose for an explanation and I will back off a few meters until I can breathe freely...

Ah I wish Quinny were here Marcus, to tell you your assertion lacks gas !!
He might even tell you you're having a "remicks" moment!! :icon_redface: :icon_lol: ............
Still , as someone who until then highly favoured Duran Duran ...... I always felt the song stunk big time:icon_mrgreen: ...
......now I know why
(the last one is pretty compelling )

Personally, I'd rather hear Simon Le Bon fart than sing.:icon_confused:
...ya gotta beat the street......
Marcus, I know your question is of a serious nature, but... :icon_lol: I could barely keep a straight face when I read your question... :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol: Thank you for making me laugh! You made my day. :icon_razz::icon_mrgreen::icon_lol: Definitely one of the best questions I've seen asked on the forum since joining. LOL! :icon_biggrin::icon_lol:
Hrmm I don't hear it. I love the song--though it's near the end of the early 'great period' of Duran Duran for me. Until I bought the box set of their first three albums remastered, I never eralized how vastly different the album original was before Nile Rodgers remixed it drastically for the single and extended mixes (and then went on to produce other songs for them, most notably Wild Boys).
About farting sounds though, an ex of mine almost ruined one of my fave Donna Summer non singles, Lucky when he said the boingy synth sound in it sounded like farts :( Luckily I've finally got that image out of my head :P

This ain't going anywhere.
Could they be fart sound effects or not?
I can't see either the Duraners or ex Chic, Nile Rodgers purposefully putting fart sounds into a track they wanted to be a hit, and for Rodgers the start of a new successful collaboration
I say NO. They do NOT sound like farts to me.
In fact they sound like the "belches and squelches" that eminated from many a bass synthesizer.
These sounds are the basis for MANY a House record.
I would wager that you are hearing a sample of perhaps "Acid Tracks" buried in the mix?
DuranDuran were after all big dance music fans. How many pop/rock acts can say they had records mixed by Larry Levan and Produced by CHIC?
These sounds are on MANY dance and pop records.
I'll take that as an answer because I can't remember hearing anything so ambiguous.
The example given by EricHG23 does not come close to what I hear in Duran Duran's track. Donna Summer's Lucky weird synth sound is pro eminent.
It is so obvious that it becomes a characteristic of the song.
I can then understand someone being annoyed by it.
The synth sound in The Reflex adds nothing to the track but...perplexity.
I bet ya that the next time you hear the song, you'll have that in mind...

Oh I didn't mean to say they sounded remotely the same. You just got me thinking :P

I'll bet everyone thought and (hoped) that this little thread would just quietly ..... er ... "drift away" ...but, NOPE !! :icon_razz::icon_razz:
Could something similarly be said in reference to EARTH WIND AND FIRE ??????:icon_question: :icon_rolleyes: :icon_redface: :icon_question:
We all know the infamous : "I smell something funny" ad lib at the end of SATURDAY NIGHT ..........
... that's damning enuff.... but now listen to what I noticed on KALIMBA STORY :
EW&F Kalimba Story
There seems to be a particularly sour note :icon_confused:if you will at about 1:15 :icon_rolleyes: :icon_cry: :icon_redface: :icon_redface:
Kalimba : play me a tune!!! :icon_lol:

KRIS
Is this another case for a septic tank or skeptic think-ing???
Everyone knows that Maurice White is a well-known duck hunter.
He has simply introduced the duck call device sound he usually brings for hunting, into this song...
Enough joking.
This is an evident proof of an awkward studio recording made after a massive fermenting food abuse :icon_lol:
