that was "part" live and "part" lip synced? I was just watching an old VHS tape of Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, and Laura Branigan was "performing" "Gloria". She definitely was doing some of the vocals live, and at one point she lowered the microphone to her side and her voice continued to blare from the speakers. It was very strange....anyone else remember seeing one of these "combination live/taped" performances? p.s. before you even ask, I'm not yet skilled enough to post these kind of things and doubt it's permitted on this site anyway.
Actually, there's been plenty of times where a "T.V. Track" (instrumental, with only the backing vocals, meant for performances.) wasn't available. And the artists would sing over their original recordings.
When I was working for Hot Tracks and would get permission for a project, I'd always request the T.V. Track, as well as an instrumental, to work from. 9-times-out-of-10, there wasn't one available.

I can't recall a specific instance but I have seen lots of this on tv, like where the artists forgot that they were suppose to sing a specific part and they didn't and the music/vocals continued on, or the performer held the microphone so far away from their mouth the mic wouldn't have normally picked up their vocals, but it did and they sounded just like the record. I don't think this is anything new.
