    Deep House Culture Track List

I posted this on the Deep House Page and so far, no one has stepped forward to even say if they've heard of these artists. Now I ask you...

I bought - sounds unheard - this really good triple CD last night called DeepHouseCulture: Choice NYC Garage. It's non-stop mixes by DJs Skooby, Nissan and Ram. On the back it says, "When they come to write the history of dance music, the word 'Garage' will have a section all to itself. The writers of that book, if they want to get the facts right, will use this collection as a damn near perfect example of what real Garage sounds like."

Have any of you heard it?
I've listened to all three CDs and they are really good - soulful vocals with a variety of electronic beats.
But, it sounds like House to me! What's the difference in the sounds of Garage (from the old Paradise Garage in New York) and House (from the old Warehouse in Chicago)?

    Here's the track listing:

i must admit I don't know the compilation cd you're talking about, but it does sound very interesting. Good mix of old and new tracks.
Michael Watford is one of the most underated US garage vocalist recording today. Dunno "Return Your Love To Me" but I love his "Michael's Prayer" anthem of 1994. Back then he was produced by Smack productions - is that still the case?
Yarbrough & Peobles on a deep house compilation strikes me as a bit odd though. I always considered "Heartbeats" as an unmemorable album filler on their 1983 album of the same name...but that's just me, I guess
    There was life after disco!!

[quote="Leanmean"]What's the difference in the sounds of Garage (from the old Paradise Garage in New York) and House (from the old Warehouse in Chicago)?

This is a hard question to answer.
Following my memories.... around 1985-86 the house sound of Chicago spread all over the world, and mostly took in London and southern mediterranean Europe. Frankie Knuckles began to be know as the "father" of house, even if he left the Warehouse in 83.
On the other hand, another dj and another club, Larry Levan and the Garage, were achieving cult status around the same time.
I always thought that calling this music "house" and that "garage" was pure marketing, in order to create more rumour and raise the sales of recorded music (those were the years in which the compilation records were beginning to destroy the singles)

Both house and garage were basically a mixture of new synthetised sounds and soul vocals, where house was more on the electronic side and garage on the vocal side, but if you look at some of the Knuckles or Levan playlists of the era the records are often the same!

Shuffle Inc have recently released "This Aint Chicago" which is a kind of deep bass old style jackin tune.
